Don, that is fantastic news!!! It must be such a great feeling to have a renewed sense of life. Time to celebrate with the new 1DS!

I'm personally not looking for a studio, yet. I stress, yet.

I saw the photos on flickr, amazing. She's talented and has been everywhere. i'm jealous.

Thanks Brendan! Glad the big stores in NY are all closed for Jewish Holidays or I may have already pushed the button. I also need to separate my wants from my needs!

Nice shot DJS!

So who's up for a ride around the city? Not too many tourists and everything is starting to bloom and be beautiful and lastly, not too hot.

Let's pick a weekend day and stick to it. I propose May 17th. Who's in?

Hey there mumbles,

My weekend work schedule is ramping up and May 17th won't work for me but I could pull off Sunday, May 4th. Is this too soon? Other than that I'm pretty much booked until mid-June or so.

BTW: brought the tandem to NYC last weekend to visit our daughter. Did two excursions all around the city. Great urban riding.

Nice shot (pun intended!) DJS!

re:bike ride-I'll be in the pacific northwest from May 14 to the 26, and the 4th is iffy. But please don't make your plans around my schedule!

I got in from NYC last night (no bike for me either), but I did fill up three 4gb cards of pics. Sorry, none of me drooling outside B&H. ;)

Becca

I've got a tent that will be in use until June 9, but you're welcome to borrow it after that if you'd like. It says it's a 4 man tent, but I think you'd have to like each other pretty well. It has an 8' x 8' footprint and is just over 4' tall at the highest point. It weighs 10 lbs, so if you were going to be hiking with the tent it could be a little heavy, but you're welcome to it (unless something happens to it on the camping trip I'm leaving on next week!)

Here's the specs. http://www.rei.com/product/715471

Not sure if the seals are still around but I got this one playing about with the 300 and stacking the 1.4 and 2xTC down off White Horse Beach in Manomet last month. Definitely not the best IQ wise but my eyes and MF skills are lacking, coupled with the wind and this is what I end up with.

I've never really camped before so that's appealing to me.That explains the lack of tent. We're going to Greenfield State Park (http://www.nhstateparks.org/state-parks/alphabetical-order/greenfield-state-park/campground-information.aspx) July 10th to 13th and possibly Moose Hillock Campground (http://www.moosehillock.com/) in either July or August. Google map: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&lr=lang_en&hl=en&msa=0&ll=43.65595,-70.708008&spn=2.833552,4.026489&z=8&msid=101708591931460374743.00044d4ce5c958ea994c4

If either of those places agrees with ya, I have a spare 10'x10' tent and camp in style, BBQ grill, stove, etc. Let me know.

Moose Hillock should be sweet, it's just south of Lost River (http://www.findlostriver.com/) and is bordered by the White Mountains and has a awesome pool that my son will love. My wife also wants to check out Ruggles Mine (http://www.rugglesmine.com/) as we'll be somewhat close to it.

I'm sure you would be able to get closer at low tide, heck you may be able to walk most of the way along the beach. I was up on a bluff for the shot, there is kind of a path/sketchy looking stairs down from the bluff but if I were doing it I'd go the beach route.

Here's one with just the 300 to give you an idea of the environment you would have to walk through to get closer.

Mumbles, I passed through at about quarter to nine this morning and the high tide was at about peak so no dice today. Here's a link (http://www.tidesonline.com/showtable.php?stationname=Boston&IDNUM=196) for the tide schedule so you'd be able to plan something as soon as the sun comes out again. I've spoken to some locals and they've said that the seals hang out there throughout the summer so no rush.

Vinny, I haven't seen much in the way of gulls at all so far this year. Marshfield, Scituate, Cohasset, Plymouth, heck even from Sagamore to Wellfleet I haven't seen many to speak of. Good luck though if you do decide to go.

Hey everyone,

So I know you guys have done some photo bike rides in the past, and I had a question about what you do with your gear? I'm moving to Newport, RI in two weeks and from the bit of driving around I've done I decided I'm going to get a bike, but I don't have a photography bag I'd trust while using a bike. Basically, I'm looking for something that's closer to a bicycle messenger's bag (worn high on the back and secured with a cross strap) than a "hipster" messenger bag (worn low on the back or hip, free to bounce while walking).

I started a thread here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=505315) but I wanted to post here too because I know some of you are cyclists and may have a solution for me.

After June 1st if anyone wants to come down to Newport for a weekend day and do some photography let me know!

Hey I am in. But tonight, I am enjoying the wonders of Quebec City and it's 400th year anniversary!

I don't ride that much, actually not really at all. A backpack camera bag seems like it wouldn't be too bad to use, maybe a slight bit restricting though.

Any meetings happening around the area soon? Or would anyone like to around Boston. I need to get some experience under my belt and someone to maybe teach me. Hah, lacking in every aspect at the moment. Daunting starting off with no one to help, not even my school!

Thought the Boston thread would be a good place to start myself off here. (:

Some of the backpacks are nice...but I like the ease of use of the messenger bags, don't need to put the bag down to get inside it.

As far as anything in Boston, I'm relatively free and in the greater Boston area for the next week or so, though I have a feeling most people are working. Looks like it'll be a nice weekend though to maybe try and do something.

Yeah, that is true, messenger bags are a lot easier to get into. I don't travel to Boston much, but so far its my favorite location to goto. Cities are interesting to me, this boring town doesn't have much to offer besides some nice country-looking locales.

I happen to be working every weekend day. Maybe not one of them If I can convince someone to take my shift, its going to be beautiful out on those days for once and I'd love to get some shooting done. If anyone is up for anything maybe saturday or sunday, I'm down. As long as I have some money to take the train in that is. Wish tomorrow wasn't going to be raining.

I've been through Tweksbury a number of times zAridzzone, and know what you are talking about. Nothing of any major interest. Not a bad town, just not as interesting as even a small city.

When the weather is nice, I go into Boston a lot to shoot. Actually, even when the weathers bad, since you get shots you don't see much because people won't go in, let alone bring their camera out in the rain or snow. I love going in at night, usually from an hour or two before sunset till midnight or so. But have even been known to go in at 3am, and shoot till dawn. The streets seem surreal being empty.

I don't feel save in other cities doing this, since I don't know it as well as I do Boston.

, and have even spent time shooting from say 3am till runrise.

Haha, I think I will let people ask me instead. Hopefully it's a day when I am free anhd not busy or broke. It is hard when you get a new "digital media lab" (which should have been photo lab) that is nothing more than a teacher fresh out of college who knows nothing about photography and basics on dreamweaver/flash. Its a bummer.

sfaust: It is true though, very unappealing. I was thinking about going into Boston tomorrow even If it is going to rain, but train rides are expensive for me. Ha, im almost broke because of today. Wish I could go out in the morning around Boston or into the wee hours of the night.

Woloi,

You may want to take a look at the lowepro fastpack 350. It's a backpack that I use biking all the time and also allows acess to the camera by taking your right shouldestrap off. It then acts kind of like a sling pack. I like it a lot for my 5D and a couple of lenses & a flash and my 1D MKIII fits as well. It's worth a look.

You neglected to mention his money! I hear Brendan is loaded with both Old Money and a self made fortune! (LOL)

I put a few on Flickr, but have not done much with my files (lazy) and it seems like so much of a hassle getting them set up for this site. I need to make a droplet to size them right so I can just drag them!

PS Edit: Oh, nice images Bryan! Really!

Thanks Don. I never knew photographing birds could be so rewarding! I was SOOOO thrilled to get that eagle shot. We were tooling down the road and I saw what looked like a bird on top of an old tree. At the same time, we were both like, "EAGLE!!!!" and I damn near crashed the rental car pulling over so I could get him. Right after I took it, he flew away! And the heron, holy moly! We were at a lagoon on Vancouver Island and there were literally about 12 heron, a few swans, several gulls & crows, and 2 bald eagles, all waiting for the tide to come in with dinner for them. I just wish I had a better/bigger lens now.

ps-I made a PS action that adds my border and resizes them, then I just save for web and they're good to go. ;)

After June 1st if anyone wants to come down to Newport for a weekend day and do some photography let me know!

Hey, FYI, I posted into your thread on bike camera bags. I just picked up a Lowepro SlingShot 200 AW and it is, so far, a great solution for carrying my gear while riding.

Also, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that we'll be in Newport for the 4th of July (a Friday, woohoo!!). I'll know for certain as the date gets closer, but perhaps we could have a little POTN meetup in Newport for the 4th. Assuming it doesn't rain! ;)

That area is gorgeous, and I've been dying to get back up there. I should be available next Sunday (June eighth) for late afternoon up there. Are you thinking sunset?

Other stuff happening this summer-the next full Waterfire (http://www.waterfire.org/season-schedule/2008-schedule#2008) in Providence is Sat, June 21. Buttonwoods Farm (http://www.buttonwoodfarmicecream.com/) in CT is having their Sunflower (http://www.sunflowersforwishes.com/) event July 19-27. Larz Anderson Museum of Transportation (http://www.larzanderson.org/Topics/Topic.cfm?TopicName=Lawn%20Events&CFID=1204974&CFTOKEN=26216719) in Brookline (usually $10 to get in) has some sort of car show every weekend (Italian, German, British, American, etc). Every Father's Day, I usually go with my Dad to the classic car show at Portsmouth Abbey (http://kpg.gercom.com/carshows/index2.html) in Portsmouth, RI.

I'm planning on being in Newport, RI for the 4th of July, most likely for the better part of the afternoon into the night. I haven't been down there since I upgraded from a p&s, so I'm dying to get some night shots of the Newport Bridge(plus fireworks over the harbour, maybe Fort Adams or a trip to Fort Wetherhill). Hopefully woloi can scout out some primo locations for us! ;)

I am up for a Hull Sunset, Cohasset and Scituate anytime. Newport OK, but 4th can be crowded. The Parade in Bristol can be an event to get crowd shots.

On June 28-29 ?? there is an Air Show out of Quonset Point, RI. I have a friend in the boat charter business and I asked him about getting offshore at Quonset and he would be able to take 6 or so. Cost would be $70 per head. I would be up for that too. Anyone else interested in this??

OK that makes four if I count right. Brendan, Mr & Mrs Bryan and me so far. We will leave from Galilee at 9AM on the 29th. I will pay charter the $70 a head and you can pay me if that works. Any more? Room for 2 more.

Haha, big joke. ;) I should be ok, I made out just fine on the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles recently and that thing moves a LOT. Can't wait to see the P.R. pics!

On a serious note, do you guys think my 70-300 IS will be enough for the airshow or should I look into a telephoto extender for it? Does Canon even make one for that lens?

Brendan, Yes same exit.

Bryan, the 1.4 extender will work with your lens but based on its aperture at extension, it could lose auto focus. Your camera manual will tell you how slow the lens can get and still shoot auto focus. The 1.4x cuts 1 stop, the 2x reduces 2 stops. I was thinking the 200 would be enough. Should I bring the 500? arrgh!

Hey Don, I just got back a few hours ago and did the Puffin trip last night. I went on the Hardys III boat out of New Harbor, decent enough set up that they have. They guarantee Puffin sightings or the next trip is on them not that it really matters as they take you out to a breeding island. We only saw a few so the Capt. stayed out about ten minutes extra and it turned out pretty well in the end. I would have stayed an extra few hours today and done the seal outing they offer it being a gorgeous 68° and sunny with a decent bit of wind, but it's been my experience that combo isn't so well once out on the open water. Another time I guess.

Anyone else interested in going should do it soon as all the rates seem to be going up to peak starting in July for the summer. Where I stayed my room was $89 an night, next month it's going to $159 a night. Now I didn't stay at the dodgiest of places, but it most certainly wasn't the best.

Interesting fact, the Red Arrows will be performing at this event. Rare occurance in New England or the US for that matter. Secondly there will be a harrier demonstration, another rare occurance up this way. For those into airshows, this is going to be quite different. Looking forward to it. Anyone have a spare 100-400 laying around ? :)

NP Don, I used the 300 2.8L IS with the 2X TC and was giving the 1D a go through. Even at 600 they needed some heavy cropping. Here's a few from the trip.

This one was without the 2x TC, I just happened to luck out that it flew by.

Thanks, WOW, I guess I will bring the 500, 2 X and the 20D to get the closest. I might get an image in the finder if they were dead and floating, given that FOV. LOL

I will try the 1D3 and the long lens, but I really suck at holding that without a tripod and it sounds like the 5D will be useless.

OH well, if I don't get what I want, I will go way up North where you can stand in line on the island for the hide.

Thanks again!

Here's the last one without the crop for FoV reference on what you may want to bring. The Hardys III is only able to take out sixty or so, so the 500 may be a bit awkward for swinging about unless you were to stay on the upper deck. You may be able to go shorter giving you'd be able to crop heaps given the higher MP of the Mk III.

When I wasn't taking any shots I would rest it on the rail so it wasn't to bad, it would actually be the perfect situation for one of those BushHawk double handle set ups.

Any chance of you passing on the info of the other place farther up North?

I have a Bushhawk, but unless I get so I can press 400 lbs, I really cannot hold it long enough to to any good (or anything worthwhile). The key is (I understand) to keep it moving in an arc, but my chances of getting locked on while doing that are pretty slim.

The place where you can get ashore or "aRock" is Jonesboro, ME. linke here :

This from the website gets me excited:

We can get you close to the puffins -
sometimes as close as 4 feet to view the puffins close up!

We will see. Thanks again!

Holy crap that's way up there!

I live about halfway between Boston and the Cape and if we both left at the same time traveling the speed limit the entire way I'd only get there 9 minutes ahead of you according to Google Maps.

ok, my schedule has changed a small bit. On the 28th, i have another wedding to shoot. But i can be back for the 29th. Don if you guys were planning on the 28th, then just go without me. But if you can do the 29th, then still count me in. I think i've been to this airshow before... I rememeber there being water/ocean on one side. This could be intersting :)

Hey Brendan, there was a guy booked on the Air Show trip who cancelled and I understand that he is letting YOU use his 100-400, Small World huh. Hows it going with the GF?

There are a couple on Flickr! I still rarely post here because I never made a size action nor a droplet and sizing is a PITA and they are usually too small to see well.

Another question, anyone heading up to Brunswick (http://www.greaterstateofmaineairshow.com/) this year?

I've got a spare week to burn off so maybe I'll do that, heck maybe it'll be Oceana instead.
