Will a 55-250mm on a crop body be a long enough lens ?

Will a 55-250mm on a crop body be a long enough lens ?
- Ken
Well depends. Most airshows that i've been to, the 400mm on the 5d has been perfect. Don has us in a close location, i'm assuming which is why we'll be on a boat, so i'm going to guess that yes the 250 on the crop will be good. I think the purpose of the boat is to get closer than just the airstrip.

Found that. do a search on flickr for 'riairshow' , and look at the exif properties.

I'm guessing we'll be out there 4 hours minimum. I'm packing a lunch, bringing plenty of water and suntan lotion, and a hat. And dramamine. ;)
AFAIK, Don got us in at $70 each and we're leaving Galilee, RI at 9am. Galilee is 45 minutes to an hour South of Providence. We were talking about everyone meeting at the South Attleboro T-stop (Exit 2A off 95 S) and carpooling down there. Once Don gets back, I'm sure we'll finalize it all. :)

If anyone is interested, there is a Waterfire (http://www.waterfire.org/) in Providence tonight, June 21. Fires start at 8:24 pm. I'm not sure if I'm going yet as I have a bbq this afternoon that may run late. There is another next Saturday eve as well. Lots of good opportunities for night city shots and street candids, and sunset if you get there an hour before. :) I'll check back in here later today.

It's funny, I was in Providence last night but didn't know about Waterfire until I walked through it in search of a good place for dinner! Didn't actually stay for the lighting though, since we were hungry, but maybe next time?
As far as airshow, if I go it'd be with some other friends from the area and probably sans camera, seeing as my longest lens is an 85mm I feel like I'd probably have some trouble shooting an airshow :p. I get my first "real world" paycheck (with a recruitment bonus!) on Friday though, so a longer lens...or a tripod...or a flash...or filters...or something fun and moderately expensive will be in the works I think.

Ok the boat guys are getting a bit antsy. Understandably. $70. per head for the day.

24th of June 2008 (Tue), 16:58
Hi Everybody, This is Capt. Fred. I am happy to see that there is a lot of interest in the Quonset airshow. I think there is some confusion about regarding the boat or boats. We are licensed Charter boats and as such can only take up to 6 persons at a time on the boat. When I talked to Don he told me that there were more than 6 people interested in the trip and I told he we could add another boat and that boat could also take up to 6 persons. So, in effect when we go over the 6th we need an additional boat. All the boats will be about the same size. The total cost is $420 per boat or $70 per person. If you have five people it is still $420 for the boat. The trip will leave Galilee, R.I. at 9AM on Sunday. We will be viewing the airshow from a vantage point close to the end of the runway. The show will end after the Red Arrows performance at approx. 4PM. We will return to Galilee at that time. On the way to the airshow and back, you will have an opportunity to photograph a few Lighthouses together with various seabirds and if were lucky, some resident Osprey's. You need to take your lunch and something to drink as the sea air helps to bring on an appetite. For those of you who fear getting seasick... I suggest you wear the patch. (TRANSDERM V) You can call your physician and he will call the prescription in to your pharmacy. Remember, an ounce of prevention...is worth a pound of cure. The boat is located at Dock S-S in Galilee, R.I. and we will leave at 9am. For directions to the boat you can go to my website and (click on directions) on the homepage. I hope that I have cleared up any misunderstandings and look forward to meeting you all. If you have any further questions or concerns I am as near as your keyboard. Drop me an e-mail. Sincerely, Capt. Fred Gallagher Kerritim Charters

If we are short just 2, I would be willing to pony up to defray the cost on the second boat, but I think then that each boat should have 5 so that the room is maxed!
I figure we will leave the South Attleboro train station parking lot at 8AM and I have a chrysler 300C,so I can take 4 in addition to myself. Southbound on 95, take Rt 1A exit South and take the first right just past the Mobil station and loop around to the left and enter the lot. I will be there before 8.
Are we still getting together Sat night Brendan??

Hey Don, i'll be shooting a wedding up until midnight on saturday. I'll be driving back from NYC sunday morn. I would have preferred to stop by your place, but i won't be getting in until like 3am, so that doesn't really work. I'll just catch up with you guys in the A.M.

Don, how'd you make out with the puffins? We were beginning to think you just moved up there and joined the flock. ;)
Anyway, we can drive some people down as well if everyone is meeting at the South Attleboro T-stop. We have room for 2 adults(or 3 if you know each other really well) plus room for gear in my Mazda hatchback and we'll follow you down there. We'll be there a bit before 8am as well.
It's Exit 2A off 95 South. I'm not sure if you have to pay for parking on weekends there, but it's only like 2 or 3 bucks a day if you do.

The entire period of my visit was plagued by weather. Fog banks were so heavy, not much was moving. One apparently sunny day, I booked a trip with a 89ft schooner sailboat for my Granddaughter and 2 of my great grandchildren and we were turned back because of fog.
I plan to make the trip again when the long range forecast is close to perfect. But the place (Jonesport) is approximately a 7 and a half hour haul, so it won't be a one day trip and not a weekend. I plan to talk to the boat operator to see which day the load is the lightest so as to have a better position in the hide.
I so wanted to get it done before the school vacations, but "such is life"! Anyone interested?

I was thinking, maybe I will drive Pauline's Lexus SUV which does not hold more people, but the back seat may be more comfortable for 3 and the gear might pack better!

It's looking a bit like rain, however we all know how that goes... It's a rain or shine event. If anything it'll be a good backdrop other than the usual blue skies.. especially with the colorful smoke the red arrows push out.

Accuweather, weather.com and one of the local stations is pretty much saying warm and humid with a few showers or thunderstorms. Trash bags for our gear might be a good idea, maybe even a rain coat or umbrella. It doesn't look like a washout, but we'll probably get rained on at some point.
Don, will we be able to get there for 9am if we leave at 8am from South Attleboro? I have a feeling that might be cutting it close, but I'm sure Cap'n Fred won't leave without us!

FYI, for those heading directly to the boat tomorrow, directions from Cap'n Freds website:
From Massachusetts and Points North - Take Rt. 95 South to Exit 9 (on left). Follow Rt. 4 South to Rt. 1 South. Continue on Rt. 1 South to the Narragansett Rt.108 exit. Go left on Rt. 108 South (approx. 3 miles) Go past Fisherman's Memorial Campground and take next right at light onto Galilee Escape Road. Take a right at the end of the Escape Rd. (go approx.400’) and take a quick left into the parking lot. The KERRITIM is located on Dock “S-S” in front of a two story grey building housing Captain's Tackle.
For those meeting at the South Attleboro MBTA stop:
95 S to exit 2A. Turn right immediately after the Mobil Gas Station. Follow the road around the main parking lot on the left. Pull into that main lot just before the bridge. We'll meet there and be on the road at 8AM.
Don't forget to pack a lunch and bring plenty of water. :)

If you go by "Sand Hill Cove" , the state beach, you will end right at Galilee Harbor. If you are coming down 95, jump off on 1A in S Attleboro and we can caravan down if you like.
If you want a GPS point, the closest is : Port O Call, 2 State Street, Galilee, RI+1 401-083-2900. On Fridays has $5 pitchers, $2 mixed drinks, $2 Bud and Bud light bottles.
The boat is right by the Port O Call. (The reference to beer and mixed drinks is not location related!)

PS. As far as the weather is concerned...it looks to be fine. I would not put too much emphasis on the long range forcasts...they have a difficult time getting the short term forcasts correct. Instead of putting all that money into doppler radar when they build weather stations...they should just install windows.... Oh my God, I know exactly what you mean. I remember that winter,
and my favorite is "chance of showers" being reported Live on the local news, and it's raining cats and dogs..
Can't they look out the window before going on the air?
And th best is "Live, Doppler Radar, the only station is southern new england with live data from our doppler 10,000 radar..."
Well, thanks but, I prefer to get my weather from the station that has enough confidence in there ability to predict the weather 15 minutes from now, "live" doesn't help much as I already know what it's doing now. (back to the window I'm afraid)

I actually wound up getting out to the area (by boat) just in time for the biplane and the red arrows. A few buddies of mine from work got a boat and we headed out from Newport. We were right by the big coast guard ship most of the time, got a couple of cool flyovers by the red arrows. I didn't bring my camera though, since it was a tiny boat and we got kinda soaked on the way back to Newport. There were a few times though that my 85mm on my XTi would've been long enough...
Look forward to seeing all of your shots, especially since I've got none myself!

here's a few moreAhh, the Caribbean was always pretty nice. We flew into PR once, looked pretty from the air, not so pretty from the bus ride. There's nothing like a Sunset over the water though. Good pics non the less.

Thanks. I'm not very experienced, but would love to learn from others... I hope the group doesn't mind a rookie... do I have to undergo any sort of ceremonial initiation?

Welcome. We have several meets per year where we all group up in cars or in boats and do stuff together. Keep your eyes peeled. We are due for a Boston and/or Hull Waterfront meet.

Another new person here. New to POTN, and somewhat new to Boston. Moved up here in October, the only southerner moving north I've been told.
I try to be active in my Boston flickr group so hopefully I'll have similar success here as well.
See you around!

Oooh Don, you should have said the requirement was to buy all that show up a pint at the local pub.http://img103.exs.cx/img103/1719/angry.gif
I may actually make one if that was the case.

Thanks! I'm Vietnamese... so I'd have a struggle trying to get sunburned. I work on Beacon Hill. I haven't taken many photos of Boston yet, because with work and law school I'm kind of scarce for time. Trying to get out more this summer.

Not true! I moved up here from North Carolina back in 2002.

Thanks Christian! Do you know if the destination from Jonesport and Cutler is the same Island. I guess they both have landing permits and get you where the Puffins are.
I want to see and record these beautiful creatures so very much!
UPDATE:
I checked and the both go to the same island. Anyone know which is the preferred carrier? They are each $100 for the trip and get you ashore for up to two hours. Cutler is a longer drive from the South!
Don
I went there last year and went out of Cutler. (I'm from central MA so I have a similar drive from the South.) The boat ride is shorter going out of Cutler and the Captain is pretty nice. Most people advised me to go this way so I did. then it was on to Acadia. It would be a shame to go that far North and not veer off to Acadia or Baxter.

Yes but the award winning photo came from a Bass Harbor Light house sunset.
