Sweet, let's post some dates towards the end of July. Say the 26th or 27th?
As it stands right now, either of those 2 days are good with me. If we were slick, we could combine a sunset Hull shoot with some Boston night shooting! ;)
Incidentally, that is also the last weekend for the Sunflowers out at Buttonwood Farm in Griswold, CT if any is interested. The wife and I might play hookey from work one day that week and head down there.

I think that Griswold Farm is better shot earlier before the flowers get too mature! Brendan, are you in for this agin this year?

You are right! Weekends are crowded. Sometimes I feel guilty not being restricted to them, but I will still go on an off day. frankly, I would like to be there for early or late light!
Anyone else for a week day?
I will still do a weekend when the group goes.

Early or late light would be ideal. We'll have to keep an eye on the weather and see which weekend is looking better. For a weekend early might be better to avoid crowds, but they do keep it going until dusk.
Don, I'm most likely going to be out of work on the 25th for some mid afternoon appt's. If I am, I'll have the AM free. I'll let you know. I'd still do the group thing as well. :)

I'm going to take a wild guess that because it's an Ice Cream stand with a farm attached, we could show up under the pretense of buying ice cream, and "wander" over to where the sunflowers are, maybe jump a fence and take pics. Don and Brendan have been there before, I haven't, so they probably have a better idea of what goes on there. Either way, go back in this thread to last July and check out the shots they got there!

Yes they have small ropes and gates closed, but Brendan and I just melted into the fields. They were not open but I think that they did not notice us (they were preparing things). That may be a different story if a bunch of people show up and attempt to enter. That said, the fields are on both sides of the road and you could park just out of site and walk in.
I think that it depends on:
How early we can get there. No one will be around real early!
How respectful we are of their property!
If we support their cause. I have a T shirt from last year that shows we bought stuff.
If we don't get caught!
Haw many are thinking of a weekend early trip (note that by the last weekend, the flowers are looking a little "worn"!

We could do the first weekend, but only Sunday the 20th. How early? Probably too early for ice cream, eh? ;)
Either day on the last weekend is good, unless it would conflict with a trip to Hull.

Hey... Is there a Boston camera store that people use that carries Canon equipment and accessories? Bromfield is the one close to work and they're mainly a Nikon store. I'd like to walk into a store and be able to test out lenses and such.

In addition to the Hull meet, i'm thinking of organizing another meet for birds. This is in Westport/Dartmouth MA. Now i don't do birds and i'm no bird expert, but they have a few things down that way....
1. Osprey nests, they have these dedicated nests that get put up when they fly back this way, i guess, they are reachable with a 400mm or above.
2. Egret/Heron stomping ground, i saw like 20 of them all hanging out in this little pond/lake area.
3. These guys;
http://www.tuffguyphotography.com/gallery/sporadic/large/ost.jpg

And i'm sure some more stuff that i can't even spot since i'm not the bird guy. There are all sorts of wildlife down there. And it's in Massachusetts. Very close for you RI and Southern MA people. And 1 hour drive for Boston folks.

I didn't know they had wild ostrich and emu in Dartmouth!!!! ;) My mom's family is from that area, I spent a lot of time in Dartmouth as a kid. There is also the remains of Lincoln Amusement Park, if it is still standing, in that area.
I'd be interested. My 300mm on the 40D should give me enough reach since I'm not in the 400mm+ club yet. :)

Ooooh birds, I haven't seen any lately at the usual spots I hit. I may have to be in for this one. And I've got TCs' that'll get me into the 400+ club with the 300.:D
Now I need to work on getting a nice tripod/head setup beforehand if I'm able make it.
Note to self: Bring extra cash, I opened my big mouth saying new guys had to buy a pint for everyone so time to make good on it.

This is the first weekend coming up, so I'll throw this out-how about this Sunday the 20th, either early in the day or late in the day to get the best light. I'm not sure how early to get the best light. Suggestions? It is about an hour from Providence.

I think they should be reaching maturity by this weekend. If I have time tomorrow, I will take a cruise down there and check on the development. I will go Sunday if I can be guaranteed an image of Brendan sitting in the "Surrey". LOL
I will also talk to management on allowing some, or all of us in early. I will wear my donors TEE shirt and imply that we might be supporting them again. It is a good cause!

Thanks for checking that out for us Don!
I'd be alright with 2 sessions in one day, although I would need a break in between to tend to my ailing doggie.
Don, did you get to ask them if they were ok with a bunch of photographers shooting pictures there?
Two sessions in one day works for me as well! So the 27th starting in CT and finishing in Hull!
Bryan, no I did not get to discuss it. Photographers are no problem; what they might object to is people being there before opening time, but I think I would rather ask for forgiveness than permission.

2 hours or so is what I was thinking. Sunrise is about 5:30-ish. Would it be safe to say the sun will be too harsh by 9am, so we should try to be there by 7:00 am? (There I go again, sounding like a morning person!)

Yeah, two hours is plenty. And in a strange way I am not too sure that sunflowers will appear "that" much more appealing in the early light. They hold up to the bright light quite well.
But, I am hot to try the early light!

I saw the shots you and Brendan got last year, it looked like it was bright light and those were plenty good! However, I was thinking a nice wide angle of the whole field in the early am light would be great.
So can we vote on a time? I don't know where exactly to meet, Don & Brendan you guys should suggest a meeting spot, but I'll suggest we get there at 7:00AM on Sunday the 27th. An earlier or later time would be ok as well if it works better for anyone. Figure we'll spend approx. 2 hours there.
Then I can go home and nap before heading out to Hull. :D

Sunflowers in Griswold
Okay so here's what I found yesterday. There are two fields you can walk through, one is the main large one where the tractor pulls the hayrides and the other is a small one across the street. There is another field directly across from the ice cream stand.
The best field was the 4th one which is down the street slightly. the advantages of this one are the size of the field and the fact that you are above it for easy photography.
My tips for this location would be:
1. Circular polarizer
2. Step stool (especially for the main larger field where you cannot get good angles on the 8 foot tall flowers.)
3. Go early or late in the day
4. Try the ice cream
Here a few of the photos I took...

Yeah, it was downpours when my wife and I got there at 6:45am. But then it cleared up with sunny blue skies. Not. We waited there in the thunder/lightening/rain for about 45 minutes until it let up, got out and got about 2 dozen shots before it started again. We left around 8:30, went to Cracker Barrel, the sun came out, barely, so we went back and got a few more shots in the 20 minutes or so before it started raining again.
In my daze this AM, I forgot to PM you my cell. We are going to head up to Hull, but I will check the weather before we head out. If it is looking like t-storms up there, we'll probably pass.

Well!! Hmmmm! As I drove out of Hingham Harbor, I saw it, . . . . . a brilliant Red in the West. By the time I crossed the Fore River Bridge, there it was, . . . . . a flaming red sunset aligned to delight the eyes and the lenses lucky enough to be on that fair spot in Hull.
As I sadly headed out 93 and South on 95 towards Providence and the lightning, I just knew in my heart that Brendan and Natalie were most likely sitting on a warm blanket, looking out to the West from Hull, snapping away and chuckling!

Yes PHOTOMATIX is real easy to use. Just a word of caution. When you download the free trial. it works just fine, but watermarks the image. Most people use the demo on a bunch of prints and like the program and buy it. BUT, the serial number DOES NOT remove the watermark from those you have processed. You have to process each image again.
So just do a few and make up your mind from them!

Coppatop85

Dave hill? "That look" All those shots were taken with the tamron 17-50 2.8. Most of them were longer exposures, or had ND filters on them in the day. I just PPd them till I thought they looked right, or cool. For the band ones, they were out of focus, however I did some PP to work with that, and they ended up looking great.
I'm hoping to get into boston for a weekend in august or early september to do some skyline and day shooting, maybe I'll see you guys there!

Hey boston folk! Nice to meet you all, not sure if i have posted in this monster thread yet, but I live in Foxboro, MA. I make it into boston every now and then to shoot and enjoy town. Here are some recent pics I took of the New England area:
Hope you like, happy shooting all!
Welcome! Great shots...

Yeah, the Music shots had some of that gritty, unsaturated look that Dave Hill is famous for. I was just wondering if you were aiming that way or arrived from your usual workflow.
Just for the record, there are a bunch of us South of Boston and as a group, or subset, we are likely to go almost anywhere. Hope to meet you soon!

During the Hull "Umbrella Extravaganza" Shoot, we were talking about other outing possibilities. I mentioned that the BRIMFIED ANTIQUE SHOW could be interesting because or the artistic layout of many antique displays.
The next show is Sept. 2-7 which is not far away. Would anybody be up for something like that??

Yeah, they were a bit OOF, so I tried bluring different burts, sharpening some parts, saturating certain colors while de-saturating others, I honestly cant remember exactly what I did, but I know I used both Adobe Camera raw, CS3, and lightroom on those shots. I googled dave hill and I can see what you mean.

THIS is my plan for tomorrow! (Sunday) Anybody in? How about you guys and ladies close to PVD (within 50 miles, (LOL). This does not happen that often and represents some high level talent!

Here is the location. Plenty of parking in that area on Sunday. Or park for $1 in the Mall and walk over, or park for free in the State House lot and walk a little further. . . . . or car pool with me!

Seems neat, though can it compare with Jimmy Buffet? :p I'm actually busy tomorrow, not going to the folk festival though, even though I live about a mile and a half away...it's kind of expensive.
