Hey all! When are we going shooting? I just ordered a 50D and I'll have it in plenty of time for next weekend for a shoot.
Yes, it's been a long time. :-)
Hooray!! You are back!! Just in time to freeze your tootsies off! Bring RUM.
While I, on the other hand am warming my butt in new Mexico this weekend. I went to Bosce del Apache today but, did not get positioned to get much. Trying to get back for sunrise tomorrow.
Wish I were better at tracking birds.

Anyone willing to help a newbie?
I have a 40D and have trouble focusing with my lenses. I mostly shoot in 'P' mode with either a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 or Sigma 18-200mm f4-6. Now I don't know if the problem is with my camera or the lenses but sometimes I have trouble focusing either wide or long. I've heard of front focusing or back focusing issues but I don't know if that's my problem. So I would like to meet with an experience photographer and diagnose the problem. I think a friendly photographer is more likely to give unbiased opinion vs. camera shop.
I estimate it'll take about an hour or two of your time and I'll be willing to travel to you, buy you lunch/coffee/beer, hence my posting on the Boston POTN meet thread.
Please PM me, thank you for your time.

Well, I'm embarassed to say that I don't really know what the problem is
All I can tell is that when I try to focus, both lenses won't focus at widest (17 on the Tamron, 18 on the sigma) or Longest (50 on the Tamron and 200 on the Sigma), both lenses focus fine in between.
Since I mostly shoot in 'P', I assume I don't need to change f stop and time value, am I correct?
Thanks for any advice.

It's been a while since i posted here.. but if you guys are going to do a meet soon i'd love to join. Maybe a trip to one of the Portland lighthouses once the first snow falls would yield good photos. I'm up also for late evening/early morning Boston photos.

Since I mostly shoot in 'P', I assume I don't need to change f stop and time value, am I correct?1) When you say won't focus, does it hunt for focus or just stop at a point that is blurry?
2) Has it always been this way with these lenses or just something more recently that showed up? Also, check to see if you have the problem in Full Auto (square) or some of the other auto modes.
P = Program Mode doesn't give you option to change the f stop or shutter speed, but allows you to change white balance, ISO, etc.

What I mean by they won't focus is that they stop focusing (stop hunting) but it's still blurry. It does that in 'Auto' as well.
It's been like this since the beginning, I purchased the 40D and Sigma back in Feb and the Tamron a little later. I thought it was user error and I bought too much camera for my knowledge  but as I use and read more, it just doesn't seem right.

I went to King Richard's Fair a few months ago, and it occurred to me I took pictures, but never posted them! King Richard's Faire is an outdoor faire emulating a marketplace set in medieval times. Here are some shots!

Hey everyone,
I'm getting back in the swing of things after having a baby a few months ago and of course now its winter.
There's a rental studio in Lincoln, RI that I've been using for the past few months and would love the opportunity to work with some other photogs in studio and get ideas from each other. Ray who owns the studio is a great guy who loves to get other photogs in to play with the lights. He has two HUGE rooms (largest in southern new england if I remember correctly) and lots of lights/reflectors and backdrops. I've had alot of fun there lately.
His website is: http://www.bluelinestudio.net/RENTAL_STUDIOS.html
I've been trying to get together with other photogs because I want to learn more about studio work and its hard when its just me 'playing around'.
Would anyone be interested in doing a get together there this winter? Its very easy to get to.

How about we shoot for February 15th or 21st? We can do a mid day type of thing so funhouse69 can join us. I can check with Ray this weekend but I bet its free- I'm sure he'll welcome the time and stick around to play with us :)

Ok, its scheduled! :) Studio time is on 2/15 (Sunday) at 1 PM.
Directions can be found on his website: http://www.bluelinestudio.net/Directions.php
You'll have to park in the lot that will be on your right as you enter. His building is the second and the door is on the side (second one if I remember correctly - look for the sign) facing the pond. He's on the second floor, door is at the end of the foyer when you enter. His door is the second one on the left on the second floor (warning, lots of walking/stairs to get into the studio - take this into consideration when planning what to bring). He has all the lights, backdrops and reflectors we'll need. He has the wireless system too. You may want to plan on bringing your own tripod. We may have both studios to use too!
Please plan on arriving a few minutes early to set up, get WB etc.
We need a model huh? Need ideas on that front - don't want to pay any money though so if anyone knows anyone interested in being our guinea pig tell them about this!
We need to decide how long we want it for. Right now no one else is scheduled that day so we can pick - but as its a weekend I'd recommend we pick soon. We pay the day of. 2 hours costs $70, 4 hours ~$100. We'll need to plan on splitting that by the number of folks that attend. More the better as far as money in concerned but that may mean less time per photographer with model...
So anyway... who's up for it?

That date works for me. I'm in. My wife may or may not want to join to try her new XSi...I'll let you all know later. She may be willing to let us take some maternity shots of her, but not everyone might be interested in that.
The only thing I could think of for a model would be to try Craigslist and find a model who would pose in exchange for CD's with images for her/his portfolio. I have a fairly standard model release contract if we need it (might be a good idea). Or we could just shoot each other!
If there ends up being more than 2 or 3 of us, probably book the 4 hours.
This should be educational for me...I have zero studio experience. :)

I'm TOTALLY up for maternity shots... that and newborns is actually my focus :D
If she wants to do something some other time that's cool too...
I agree about getting more time if we have a good sized group - so we'll wait to see who wants to come.
I found quite a few models on Model Mayhem and some of them are brand new and won't require money but perhaps just pictures...
...but I don't have an account of there. If anyone does and can send messages to one or more of the gals to see if they'd come along, that would be great!

The more the merrier Bryan!
I've got 2 studio maternity shoots under my belt now and although I really enjoyed them they're not portfolio work yet - I'm really close so I'd welcome the chance to practice some more!
Invite as many people as interested - we should have a good amount of leniency as far as time. Don told me to check out the strobist groups too but I don't want to go there until POTN has first dibs.
Thanks again!

Put me down for the studio shoot. It will get me out of the house and I get to play with my photography stuff.
So, like Bryan, I've never done the whole studio thing. Should I bring my tripod and 46" reflector?
The only thing that would keep me from coming is if the weather is like it is today. ;)

You don't need to bring reflectors - he's got a bunch of real big ones already on stands. We'll need a tripod. Although he has one on wheels it's always missing when I need it most... I have a cheapie sunpak one so if someone has a good sturdy one - please bring it!
Ya, the weather is gross - I hate winter but at least it gives me an excuse to get more studio time: "But honey, I can't take pictures outside on account of the weather"

I can also offer my commercial studio for a shoot if there is some interest in doing some indoor shooting. Plenty of studio lighting gear to mess with, access to models, stylists, and makeup artists, wardrobe, etc. We have 800 sq ft, or 2,200 sq ft areas to shoot in. Its setup mostly for product/advertising work, but we can bring in props, backgrounds, etc, in order to shoot people and models. We would have to shoot it on week nights, or a weekend so it wont conflict with my clients.
Contact me off-line if you are interested (use the contact e-mail off my website below), and if enough respond, I'll setup a date and time.

Thanks Jen. I am still on the fence. I have always wanted to attend and I am trying to see the value more clearly. What scares me most is that in spite of the high cost, you still have to spend anywhere from $89 to $279 each to access seminars within.
I guess the question that I am asking is; Has anyone around here had experience with this show in any venue before ?

hi all,
So due to switching some work schedules, 2/15 opened up for me so I was wondering if there was still space for me as well?
by some coincidence, I scheduled a shoot that afternoon as well with someone (TFCD); if you need a model I can bring her along and I'm sure she'll be elated to have many different photographers practice with her! otherwise I'll just skip a little early and shoot her separately.
do we have an estimate on the approximate hours?

I think there are now about 6 or 7 of us interested in this. My feelings are we should get the studio for the 4 hours so everyone can have a decent amount of shooting time.
that sounds good.
so do you want me to ask the model? I think she is just starting out if that is ok.

Yes, we need a model. It was looking like we were going to have to hire someone - so free would be AWESOME :p
Just starting out should be fine - its probably first time in studio for alot of us too, so hope she doesn't mind!

I may be able to bring a second model.
Some more questions:
Did we decide on a studio, and what would the total cost be?
Do we want to be in the studio all day, or try some location shots as well for a couple of hours? If so, anybody know any good locations?
Will there be someone there who knows what they're doing so we can spend the studio time efficiently?
Should we get a MUA?

Did we decide on a studio, and what would the total cost be?
Yes, Blueline Studios in Lincoln, RI - total cost will depend on the number of people going - more people means more time. It will be split evenly amoung participants. Cost is here: http://www.bluelinestudio.net/RENTAL_STUDIOS.html
Do we want to be in the studio all day, or try some location shots as well for a couple of hours? If so, anybody know any good locations?
I don't think we'll have enough time for outdoor shots - we can schedule that for another time. There will be SO much to do/learn in studio that we'll want to capitalize on the time we have. There are several very good locations near the studio if we want to do a outdoor/studio day another time.
Will there be someone there who knows what they're doing so we can spend the studio time efficiently?
Yep (and no, it's not me). We'll have a good flow, no worries!
Should we get a MUA?
I'm assuming this is a model release? If so, yes bring one for the models to sign.

Nope - but if the models want to bring one for themselves, they are welcome to. There are rooms where they can change and do makeup. In return for their services we will give them edited copies of the pictures we get - everything else is up to them.

I have a basic model release contract. I'll bring multiple copies for each photographer and the model to sign. I believe it is or can be worded so the model will pose in exchange for digital copies of the images. It's possible the model will have her own contract.

All depends on how many people we have signed up to go - as that will determine how much time we get at the studio.
I talked to Ray about this last night as I had studio time and he may have someone come to help 'run' the day - a canon rep in CT uses his studio alot and may be able to help us out. I had to laugh when he tells me he brings all the stuff canon gives him and he's literally throwing away the wrappers when he gets there. Must be nice to have tried the 5dmk2 4 months before it came out
So anyway, he's going to let me know what this guy says when he gets back from the superbowl (yes, he's photographing the superbowl... he's 32 and its his 4th SB, and yes, I'm jealous ;))

wow, that someone would be awesome!
Jen, I was hoping to get a general estimate of time, to tell the model; she actually lives in NH and even though the distance didn't seem to matter to her, she seemed a little surprised when I said we might be shooting all day 'cause when I first booked her it was just me, for a couple of hours you know. I'm trying to convince her for as many hours as possible. I'd hate for her to renig at the last minute!

It'll probably be all day thing - but she TOTALLY doesn't have to be there the whole time.
Let me see what Ray says about the canon rep too - if he decides to help us out then he may have a different idea of 'flow' to the day that I anticipate and that will help give her a better idea.

Final cost is not determined yet - are you coming Don? ;)
Ray is still trying to get ahold of the Canon rep for me - we may have to throw a few bucks his way, not sure yet. He did say we'll have the studio all day to ourselves - meaning both rooms. I wish he had more copies of the softboxes etc. I may have to ask about that when I speak with him again.
Since its an all day thing do you want to plan on bringing in lunch? Bottles of water? etc? I can arrange all of those things.

What's TFCD mean? (Sorry, not up on the acronyms as of late).
The model my friend is bringing is an area actor needing to update his headshots etc. so his time is free in exchange for 'a fun day of picture taking' (supposedly he loves this stuff).
Mike - this is for this coming Sunday, the 15th - if you can bring in a MUA that would be GREAT! I'll need to know that cost ASAP.

TFCD mean time for CD. Basically you the photographer gives your time and you give the model the pics (usually on a CD) for their "Payment".
It used to be TFP "Time for Prints" how things have changed huh :-)

Jen,
If you can find out what type of strobes are in the studio, I can bring the 2 softboxes I have providing they are the same brand? If they dont match, hopefully the studio has 2 extra speed rings then I can bring them as well. I also have a light meter and cybercyncs remote triggers if needed, instead of using sync cords (unless the studio has triggers already and light meter).
So the details that are definite so far are ....Sunday 2/15 from 9am-4pm, 8+ people so far, 2-3 models? price TBD.

so I have a few more models that are interested, in addition to the one I was already planning to bring, because as of yesterday it seemed as though we only had one model! I don't mind telling the new ones we are full already, but wanted to see if the additional numbers would be beneficial for us.
We should probably count how many models there will be as well, no? (I have one confirmed, and two interested).
What number do you think is reasonable, so they don't get tired and we have enough variety but also they're not sitting around waiting much?
Should we stagger the time for them so it's more efficient?

Well, 8 or so photographers, two rooms. I'm assuming we can split and use the rooms at the same time? We basically have the studio for 7 hours, right?
If we have 4 models, that will be 3-4 hours each for them, which in my opinion seems tolerable for them but if anyone has other thoughts, feel free to chime in.
Are we going to be shooting one a time? Or if there is wireless stuff there, maybe we can do two photogs per model at a time? (stagger the shots)
If we shoot one a time, and if every photographer wants to shoot all 4 models, we each have 45 to 50 minutes per model (assuming two rooms going at once).
If we have one room only, half the above. If we shoot two at a time, double the above. etc etc.
That sounds good to me. How many models do we potentally have?
I have one definite, and I want to bring one more but I think we shouldn't bring more than 4 or else the day might get too complicated with this many photogs, no? (I already had to do this on a spreadsheet haha). On the other hand, the more the merrier...

A page or so back, Jen mentioned we have both rooms for the day. I would assume the studio has (or others will bring) enough lighting/triggers/etc to have both rooms shooting at the same time.
My wife Michelle will most likely not be able to stay the entire day, but I will pay her share of the day as if she were. Jen, you might want to PM the folks on the list who haven't checked in recently.
Lunch-We need to eat!!!! Jen, again, you know the studio and the area...are we allowed to eat in the studio and are there any places that delivery nearby? Pizza, chinese, etc.. I can bring a case of bottled water for everyone.
I have no studio experience (or experience with models), but my instinct is that 4 models would be just the right amount.

Ok, take a step back folks...
First off we have a few people coming who have NO studio experience and to be fair to them they will need time to get to know the lights and how to work everything. We won't be jumping right in with a model for those people.
There's quite a bit of equipment in this place - people need to know how to work the rolleasy system (backdrops) and changing lights etc.
The owner of the studio will NOT be there that day.
I will do my best to try and get down there before hand to ensure that everything we will need will be there but I have no idea what is available to us until I do so.
I'm trying to get my kids to bed right now (2 hours late) so I'll be back to elaborate more.
I do have a flow to the day in mind and will elaborate more - I'm giving people time to sign up and waiting to hear from Ray if he was successful in getting in touch with the Canon rep or not - if he was we will not need more than 2 or 3 models. There are also people who may or may not come based on the Canon rep being there.
Please be somewhat patient - I don't have everything ironed out now because I have to rely on other people for information I don't have yet.

Ok... update.
Canon rep is a no-go. Sorry for anyone that was hoping for that. I may have the opportunity to set up another studio session with him though - he's away this weekend and will call when he returns.
I have the 411 on a photographer who is also a MUA and may be able to help us out. Since I'm a family/child photographer I'd feel much more comfortable with someone with adult studio experience - using teddy bears and making funny faces will get you some wierd looks from adult models. He will probably require money - if it turns out to be too much for the number of photographers we have I'll pass on it. As a stay at home mom I am doing my best to keep this CHEAP - I can't afford much.
Today I spent a few hours with Ray at the studio to make sure we have everything we'll need and he took me (and my 6 month old) around the building. OMG I have some AWESOME places for us to take pictures in this place. It's an old mill building built in 1846 and it has some AMAZING rooms with great natural light to get some amazing shots in. Technically we may not be allowed in some of those areas but seeing as no one else will be there after 12 noon... who's gonna tell on us? ;)
Here's where we are ordering lunch from: Angelos Pizza (http://www.angelospalacepizza.com/)
Please look over the take-out/delivery menu. I have personally ordered from them several times and can vouch for their delicious-ness.
You have until Friday to sign up. Please add your name to the list so I don't miss you.
I am going to go to BJs to get a case of water also - heat works really well in this place and it dries out quickly, you really need water.
I'll have more hopefully tomorrow. Final details will be posted here on Friday.

Our male model has not finalized his commitment to Sunday as of right now - hoping to know more tomorrow. So if anyone knows of additional models, we can use them as we have nothing scheduled for the afternoon now that the Canon rep can't join us.
Also, I think we should provide lunch for the models and MUA/hairstylist - what do you guys think? I don't want to seem to be spending everyone's money if you don't agree.
BTW - I've already paid for the studio space so you'll be reimbursing me for that cost, so if you see me pocket the money, that's why  Lunch will be on you guys unless we agree to cover lunch for our 'hired help'.

Ok - BIG CHANGES
We're now a workshop. We're extending the day by 1 hour (no additional cost), expect the day to go from 9 - 5 PM now.
Manny Rego, a professional photographer with loads of fashion experience is going to help us out. Check out his website here: mregophoto.com. (http://www.mregophoto.com). Here is his model mayhem profile (http://www.modelmayhem.com/44477).
The day will flow like this. 9 - 10 AM get everyone in, get cameras set up, get familiar with the lights and backdrops. 10 - 1 PM Manny will conduct a workshop on lighting for models, props and tether systems and working with models. 1 - 5 PM shooting with the models in both of the studios and various places around the building.
Manny requires his expenses covered - $140 plus lunch. With 9 Photographers (Mike, you haven't added yourself to the list yet!) the final cost ($150 for the studio, $140 for Manny and $10/pp for lunch) will be $34 per person.
If any additional photographers would like to join the group please sign up by friday - this will decrease the cost even further. Manny did say that he thought our group was on the small side so getting more will be fine.
If anyone knows a make up artist willing to come help - tell them we're a fun bunch and could really use their help.
On the plus side, Manny is a Canon shooter ;)

My cell phone was in my pants pocket when it went through the washing machine this week :( T-Mobile won't have my new one to me until next week.
As a result I need someone with a cell phone to be the 'phone point of contact'. You need to plan on being there for a few minutes before 9 in case people get lost and need directions. You will be the phone number we give everyone in the group and the pizza delivery guy.
The building locks after noon - so if we go outside we need to put something in the front door to keep it from locking us out - just an FYI.

I'm going to have to pass on this one. I wasnt really looking to do a workshop, A cheap day of shooting getting to know some of the forum members was more of what I was interested in. Sorry guys.
Mai-lin ill send your email to the hairstylist I was going to bring in case she still wants to be part of it.
I hope everyone has fun and I look forward to seeing the images from the day.

Hi guys,
If you know of anyone else that would be interested in coming we need to get some more folks to help keep the cost down. Because this is a first time for most folks we need structure to the day so everyone gets the most out of it.
I spread the work on the boston and providence storbist flickr groups and to my local camera club with no bites - so if you know anyone else, please let me know.

7 (6 full time, 2 half day), but I have two more in the works... hoping to convert them! If anyone knows of anyone who would benefit from this - please tell them to tag along!
We've got 3 models and a hairstylist for sure right now - one male and 2 women.
I was just talking to Manny and he's got a great outline of stuff to go over now - everything from makeup and lighting to photoshop. He's bringing a computer so he can show folks his PS workflow too. It's all aimed at beginners so don't worry about it being over anyones head.
We'll be doing lots of stuff - this is very exciting!

hmmm... is there a final cost to the day? sounds like a good opportunity but it's becoming a lot more than I was planning to spend... like Mike, I was thinking it was going to be a low cost get together and shoot type thing...
also Jen, I don't know if the two women models you quoted above refers to the models I was planning to bring, but unfortunately I haven't heard back from them since I emailed them about the new timing :( I already committed the day to one of the models, and if she is unable to work in the afternoon, I have to take photos of her in the morning and thus won't be able to join you guys.
I'll keep you posted...

There's a Becky that already spoke to Manny that is coming - was she with you nihsahs? I have a local model that I found, the Becky that contacted Manny already and Laurie's friend Phil.
I have another photographer from a local camera club that may be coming for the latter half the day.
Right now the cost stands at $47 per person. That's my personal cap. I may be able to negotiate with Manny down to $120. If that's the case...
$120 for Manny
$150 for studio
$8.50/pp (7) for lunch if we pick up the pizza and not do delivery (so no tip)
________________
$329.5
$47/pp
If Bryan can find another photog and my new friend Tony decides to come it will bring the cost down to $39.75/pp.
If another photog bails I'm going to have to cancel as I can't afford more than $50.

I'll pay a full day for my wife (since that is what we initially committed for). That will hopefully offset some of the cost if you can't negotiate Manny down, or if another photog bails on us. I think $50 for having a pro teach me something over 8 hours about studio/glamour/fashion shooting in a studio is a friggin' steal. :D

yeah I hope so too... the model I had been communicating with is also called Becky, maybe she got a hold of Manny? If that's the case, I'm all set, as she is the one I committed to shoot on Sunday, before I found out about this. If she cannot make it in the afternoon, perhaps I can convince her come in the morning anyway, and if it's ok with you guys, I'll just break off and shoot her for a little bit and join you all as soon as I get a few decent pics.
so unless something drastic happens (e.g. she decides to sue me for violation of agreement or something), count me in.

Oh how nice to wake up to this
nihsahs - Ya, Becky has a profile on Model Mayhem and she contacted Manny through that - she was actually the first one to do so, so she's very serious, which is awesome!
Nate! I'm so glad you can join us for the whole day, it's going to be GREAT!
Since we have enough people coming I'm not going to haggle Manny over $20 - the $140 he asked for is very fair.

Important Information:
If you have a good sturdy tripod, bring it with you.
Directions are on the website: http://www.bluelinestudio.net/Directions.php
Parking lot will be on the right as you enter.
The studio is located in the second building which is on the left side as you enter from the road.
The door is the second one, opposite the pond, look for the signs.
The studio is located on the second floor, the door at far end of foyer will take you there - steep staircase
Please plan on arriving as close to 9 AM as possible.
Lunch is coming from Angelos (http://www.angelospalacepizza.com/)- we'll be ordering 3, 1-topping pizzas and 3 cheese pizzas to keep cost low. I'll bring paper plates and napkins.
We'll be paying for delivery because I'm the only one who knows where it is and I don't have a cell phone so I can call to get back in the building. It won't increase the cost any as long as the prices on Angelos menu are current.
If you would like something OTHER than water to drink (which Bryan is graciously supplying) please plan on bringing it with you.
If you would like our point of contact number please email me: mai_lin@hotmail.comThis goes without saying but I'll say it anyway - we need to be very respectful to the models/makeup artist/hairstylist. They are providing a professional service to us just as anyone would and just because its based on appearance does not lessen its worth.
I'm really excited to meet everyone! This promises to be a very fun day and I hope you all enjoy it. :D
