I'm in.
Any ideas or plans? Meeting spot & time?
Do we want to be out on the water when they're sailing in? Since it's a race, being on the water might be hit-or-miss. They could sail in at any time, one boat every few hours or something.
If they are sailing around, we could always jump on a tour boat out of Long or Rowes wharves. Or take a water taxi over to the Hyatt by the airport.
Otherwise, is it just a matter of strolling along Fan Pier and such?
Any idea of when they're leaving? If it's a race, they might all be heading at at a very specific time heading to the next stop. If so, that would be a great time to be on the water.

looks like they are coming into Boston April 25th starting at 9am and the race will restart on May 16th. 9am-2pm it would prob be better to go on May 16th since all the boats will be there and will all sail off between 9am-2pm..
im down for anything but a boat would prob be best depending on security.

The Southwick Zoo opens this Saturday, April 11th and I can't wait to go and check it out. I will however avoid opening weekend and since I also have most of my days free I will wait until we get a nice day during the week to go and check it out.
Drop me a line when you plan a non-weekend visit. I might like to join you!
I live fairly close by and have not been there for 42 years! At that time I lived just a few miles from there and it was not much to see. It was kind of small and not that clean. We took our kids and my 2 year old, now 44, held on to the monkey cage and a monkey ran to the cage and bit her finger! Scared her, and us, half to death!
Over the years, the place has become very popular and I would love to go back. I find that anytime I go back to a place after many years, I cannot even orient myself to the memory locations.
We went to Napa valley last year which I had visited in 1976. I recalled visiting the BV winery while there. When I returned, the main building had been covered with ivy and it sat among many other wineries, homes and restaurants. The area had also become a semi urban area and was on an improved wide straight road, not the country lane I recalled.
Advice for any young photographers:
I was into photography then, but the concept of "Then and Now" photographs never occurred to me. Take advantage of this concept of recording places while you are young and a collection of value will be yours one day, when you make the sequel shots. They will AMAZE you!

May 16th sounds like a decent idea. Would be warmer and sunnier then too...count me in for that for now.

Drop me a line when you plan a non-weekend visit. I might like to join you!
Don - Originally this coming week didn't look so good but now there are a few potential good days coming up. Looking at the forecast Tuesday looks to be nice, sunny and warm which are my requirements for a zoo visit. With this in mind I might venture to Southwick however I have a class that night so timing might be an issue for me.
Actually Friday has some potential as well.
Let me know if you are interested and I will keep you posted.
Meanwhile I went to the EcoTarium in Worcester on Thursday and back to Franklin Park on Friday. If anyone is interested in checking out the pics they are here.

Well the forecast for Friday keeps getting better and better so unless the weather completely changes I am up for going to the Southwick Zoo.
So far I have a few people that are interested in going with me and plan on leaving my house at about 11am.
I can't wait, this will be my first trip there ever :-)

Don / Anyone else that is interested I am planning on going to the Southwick Zoo this Friday as long as the forecast doesn't change drastically. I should be leaving my house at about 11am which would put me there around noon-ish and will spend the afternoon there.
I will have a friend of mine and my 75 year old mom so we will be putting around at a leisurely pace for sure.
This will be my first visit there ever so I can't wait to see what they have. I wish I still had my 500 f/4L :-(

You should have seen some of the looks I've gotten with the 300 2.8, I'm sure the 500 would get quite a few more.
It may be even to much as you can get pretty close to most of the animals. Then again it's been over a year since I've been and they have changed some things so...
Lookin' forward to finally meeting some of the membership.
Another thing, use the directions the site gives you. Last time I went I used my GPS and it routed me down through residential developments and a wonky one lane two way road.

Don -
I didn't like lugging my own 500L when I had it so lugging someone else's around would be nerve racking for sure. Since I've never been there I didn't know how far away the animals will be. Hopefully 300mm will be good enough. No worries though I am sure I will be back now that I am among the living (I worked graveyard for the 3 years).
Heck when I was talking about the leisurely pace I was talking about me. I tend to linger for a while and take lots of pictures which is one of the best things about digital. I couldn't imagine taking 500 pics of film anymore.
It should be a lot of fun and an awesome day to boot!

Yep. I'm back. Got a new 50D and have been waiting for some good weather and some interesting things to shoot.
As for meetups, a couple pages back we have some posts about the Tall Ships, and the Volvo sea race. Buncha people going to the zoo (pick a weekend some time!).

Awesome! I remember you selling a bunch of gear...
Hope everything is going good with you. I lost my mom a few months ago, that was a significant blow. But things are getting back on track now. Well, just wanted to say hello the regulars or should i call us the old-timers, hehe.

Okay... I had to chime in on Southwick's. Technically, I am suppose to work tomorrow, but if I can get enough hours in early, I might stop over. Unfortunately, it will be me and my 11 month old daughter... not that I don't love her, but I just wish my wife was home to go with and help with her. We'll see, I might try to be a brave dad.
I normally used my 100-400 there and never really desired more reach, except for the gorilla area. I have sold it since, and the only reason I wanted to keep it was for the zoo, I wanted to be somewhat discreet as opposed to the 300 2.8 or 500 4, LOL. Anyway, I think the 300 would be good, perhaps bring a 1.4x if you have it.
It's going to be a tough one, great weather, POTN members... I'll be so upset/jealous if I don't go.
Maybe we'll see you there...

After much debate I decided that as much as I want to get a 5D Mark II I've decided that my 40D is more than adequate for my needs for now and the near future.
With that in mind I just ordered a 100-400mm L from Amazon. It should be here tomorrow, hopefully they deliver early so I can take it with me. Why couldn't I have ordered it a few days earlier? Oh well no big deal I will have it for my trip to the Zoo in Springfield which apparently is almost 2-1/2 times the size of Southwick :-)

Good question - I've never been there before and it seems like people are going to come when they can so maybe it is going to be luck.
I am trying to decide what to bring with me. Of course I would love to bring all of my equipment but never do. I try to plan for the trip and take it from there. I still have my fingers crossed that my 100-400 shows up before we leave but UPS has until 3pm to deliver so I hopefully but I'm not counting on it for this trip.

My original thinking was to sell my 40D and get the 5D Mark II to replace it but I do some motorsport and other things that require good burst mode and lets face it the extra reach of a crop body isn't a bad thing either. With that in mind I think I am going to have to add the Full Frame to my collection and not replace my existing body. That will be a little further down the road, well unless of course some amazing deal comes along that I just can't pass up :-)

You have the best idea that I have ever seen for lugging gear around a public area! A stroller filled with all your gear! Now my plan is to fill it with gear. Actually all of it. Since I have no child to lug, I could carry everything! I guess that the only problem would be. . . . what do I tell all the "Hot Chicks" that want to "see the baby"? LOL
Didn't get many shots at Southwick Zoo, but it was fun walking around. Made me realize how much can change in 42 years. A pleasure to meet you guys. Thinking about that Olympus-300f2.8 combo Christian (?) spoke of. Pleasure to meet you guys!

Ok in hindsight we should have planned on meeting somewhere at a certain time while we were there as I didn't see anyone at any point that I thought might have been a fellow POTN member. Then again I had a somewhat sleepless night the night before and was pretty out of it :-)
That said, we got there at about 11:30 and since none of us had been there before we walked the outer perimeter then worked our way through the inner one with very little backtracking. We ended up leaving at about 4pm.
I never had so much trouble taking pics of zoo animals. It seemed like either the light or the animal(s) were in the perfectly wrong place the whole entire time. Or like in the in the case of the tigers just weren't doing anything.
I ended up taking about 300 pics and trashed about 2/3rds of them to end up with about 100 of them. If anyone is interested in seeing them they are here (http://funhouse69.smugmug.com/gallery/7934035_mbcj8/1/514845137_jW7TK).

Oh man, that sucks that we didn't bump into each other. I got there around one and I believe Mike said he got there about the same time. We ended up leaving pretty close to closing, and there is much more movement near the end of the day with the cats. The two tigers were up and about and even did a spot of rough housing for the few of the patrons still there. The lions were a bit active pacing around doing laps of their enclosure, same with the chimps. Did you happen to see the monkey(didn't notice the species[good eye Mike]) eating the bird it somehow managed to catch?
Next time we should exchange cell numbers or do the meet at _______ at _______ in the future, seems a waste to be there and not say hey.

That is too bad we didn't catch up. Chris and I were together for a few hours, both lugging the 300s, I am surprised we weren't seen! LOL
Chris I knew you were going to bring up the monkey with the bird. LOL That was different. Oh and I hope you enjoy all those "open mouth" shots of the big cats... Every time I turned around they did something, it was almost comical by the end. Oh, I did get a great few shots of those poles around the trees with the two tigers behind them playing on their hind legs. And don't forget the "drop-kick" mandrill... actually it was more of a knee to mom's face.
I haven't gone threw them all yet, but I'll post a link soon.

Okay, here are a few from the zoo. I obviously favored the "big cats".
Southwick's Zoo Gallery (http://gallery.me.com/mikereynolds#100092)
Funhouse69, great shots. I think the one of the mother and baby mandrill is a winner. Nice variety, as opposed to me! Lol Thanks for sharing. By the way, you weren't taking shots of the guinea hen on top of the food shack were you? I was feeding the baby and I saw someone shooting with a 70-200 variety.

Mike - No that wasn't me... I was the guy walking around with a gray hoodie and a black Fox Hat. I was shooting with my 40D and my 70-300 f4-5.6 IS as my 100-400L didn't come in until late that day :-(
My mom is obsessed with birds, she was fascinated (as was I) with the Albino Peacock unfortunately it never moved the whole entire time we were there. At the same time she's heard about Black Swans but never saw one in real life before.
These are my mom's favorite shots

Has anyone hear from or seen Jen / mai_lin lately?
I'm signed up for the workshop with Manny next Saturday and sent her payment on Monday for me and a friend and never got confirmation that she got it... I've e-mailed her through here as well as the e-mail address she sent out to everyone that is singed up and haven't heard back. What's up with that ???
I don't have any other way to contact her.

I replied - sorry for the delay. I had had two big shoots this past weekend that were almost as much planning as this darn workshop is turning out to be. I'm really starting to hate models. I've had 4, yes 4, flake out on me this weekend.
I swear, I gotta start getting paid for this 'photo taking' stuff
Anyway, if anyone wants in on the workshop on Saturday I have two spots open still.

How did the workshop go w/ Manny?
The workshop went really well... Manny is out of his mind (which is a good thing) he knows his stuff and doesn't mind sharing with others. We had 5 very lovely models wearing some really cool & funky outfits and lots of time to work with each one of them in different locations / lighting conditions / setups.
All in all a great event, very well worth the time and money. I would certainly go to another one.
Thanks to Jen for helping put this together. Hopefully next time she won't forget her cell phone :-) (Sorry couldn't resist throwing that out there)
It was great meeting everyone that attended, hopefully we will see each other again soon.

Ya, I'm begining to think I just shouldn't have a cell phone. For the first workshop it was broken (went through the wash), for this one I left it in the car after hubby and I swapped cars... too bad its my business line - hope that's not a sign!
Thanks for coming everyone - Manny did a great job, as usual, and it was so much fun. We'll be doing an 'advanced lighting' course in the fall - you should all plan on coming if you came to the first, it'll be building on what we've learned so far. And then there's his photoshop class and pinup workshop too...

When was the last time there was a large Boston Meet. I mean more of a social get together to meet other board members, do some networking and share knowledge/stories?
I'd be interested in something like this. or even organizing some sort of lecture series.
funhouse69
8th of May 2009 (Fri), 23:17
I've been part of the group for a while and don't recall any large group meetings / gatherings. As for lecture series and stuff like that there have been a few works shops but they have been geared towards smaller groups like 12 or so.
I think that it is hard enough to get a dozen or so people together let alone hundred(s).
I do know that a lot of the people here are also part of various meetup groups which do have larger outings like one that just went up to 4 different waterfalls in NH. I believe that was upwards of 50 people.

Other than the recent model shoot, I think it's been about 1.5 years since a large number of us got together, if not 2 years - since we did a boat trip around Boston harbor. But I dropped off for the last year+ so naturally stopped trying to organize things, and apparently Mumbles stopped trying to get meets set up.
Before that we did many walks around Boston (day and many nights) and Providence, rented the butterfly house in Westford, did a cruise around Boston harbor, rented a boat for the Tall Ships in Newport, and some other stuff. And then I think we got burnt out trying to think of things to do. Between this group and another I've organized about 8 get-togethers, and I'm out of ideas. (Though some of our old ideas will be new to many folks here, since there's a lot of new names in this thread that I don't recognize.)
Anyone have some ideas? Throw them out, see if there's interest, then see if there's anyone who'll volunteer to organize things and make it happen.
It just takes 1 good idea and people will jump on the bandwagon for a get-together, and if enough people show interest then it will happen.
By the way, the Tall Ship are coming into Boston on July 8, and leaving on the 16th. I am dying to rent a boat and do both days - but it seems to be a bit expensive ($150 each for 6 people max) and there hasn't been a lot of interest. But this event doesn't need a boat - there are a hell of a lot of good land locations for this event. My first choice would be the Hyatt Hotel at the airport - take the T into the airport and a shuttle over to the hotel. My second choice would be Piers Park in East Boston, but I think that transportation and parking will be a lot more difficult.

We did a few meets last summer, a small one in Hull, MA that was mostly rained out, the Buttonwood Farms sunrise sunflower shoot that was completely rained out except for me! (lol), and we charted some boats for the RI Airshow.
I have been debating organizing a night photowalk around Providence, RI sometime over the summer. I've led small groups (2-4 people) around, but nothing larger. If there is any interest in that, I'd be willing to organize another. It can be on a Waterfire night or not. However, my wife is due at the end of June, so it may be more difficult for me to pull it off after then.
For those of you on Flickr, check out the group "Boston, Massachusetts". They organize monthly meetups mostly at night.

Hi Scott, and Bryan
It's been awhile I I agree with you Scott all it takes is for someone to organize something
Mumbles used to do that for the most part and between Scott and Mumbles there were plenty on Ideas on where to go. The usual group size was from eight to ten people so we could always fit in two cars. The hull trip had a good turn out but the weather was not the best. We all have takled about places other than Boston we tried water fire one time, It was always a good time. Scott, Jackie and I would be intrested in the tall ships as we were unable to make the last boat trips.

Ive been following the board for a few years and remember a lot of those get togethers, but for me I dont shoot a lot of that stuff. I might get on board on a walk around town at night though.
I was just thinking a social get together might be a good chance to network and share ideas. It wouldnt need to be a shoot at all, we could share ideas experience and just talk shop. Essentially what we do here just a chance for us to meet in person as well.

Anyone have any ideas for a location? Even a big Starbucks we can pwn for a few hours? :D
A few years ago we rented the butterfly house in Westford. We got the place to ourselves for two hours before they let the public in. There was a lot of socializing since it's a small place and a slow pace. And there was a lot of gear swapping, which is always fun for anyone looking to buy new gear, or deciding which gear to buy.
Anyone who doesn't feel like shooting the butterflies can just meet us afterwards, and socialize in the tent they have out back. (But you need to bring coffee and donuts. :D ) For those who do want to shoot butterflies, it was fairly cheap - like $15 a person.

I heard that too, Nathan. Whilst everything is not "finalised", I believe it will not be as big as it may have originally planned to be. Mainly because MA is in such a money hole, that they aren't going to provide too much. In fact, last I heard too, was that you would be charged $$$ to go to walk by the ships, let alone get on the tall ships after they arrive...So I think interest in the Tall Ships is drumming down. But I'll be keeping my eye out for them.

If you find a boat for $200 a day, then rent it. We'll pay you $400. You get $200 profit.
I did do quite a bit of research looking for any boat rentals advertised on the web. They were all about the same for a decent-sized boat that would make for a decent shooting platform. The cheaper boats seemed too small for 6 photogs scrambling for a good position. It basically came down to those boats that normally do fishing excursions, and 3 captains that I talked to were not willing to go cheaper just because we weren't fishing.
If you can find a boat for cheaper than $900 then I'd say that more people would be a lot more interested.

Well, if Scott says there is more going on during the day, it should be pretty busy down there...all 7 boats will leave at the same time, then you'll have the marshalls boats next to them, press boats, and finally all the private / rented boats out there too, flanking the competitors. You should be able to get some good shots from the Hyatt, more so than the Piers Park (as once they are on the move, you won't get many decent shots with a city in the background, if any!!). You'll just need a decent lens!

Just found out my crew has decided to shoot the departure from Spectacle or Long Island. Shooting from Puma's boat was great but even without a lot of chop you spend more time bouncing than shooting. I'll still be headed to Fan Pier but I'll probably have to leave at 11 or 11:30 to get to Long Wharf for the ride to Spectacle.
If anyone is going to be around early though let me know.

Do you know if the docks are in at spectacle yet? If they are I'll probably go there!

All I have to do, is mug someone for a large camera lens, steal a pass and I'm all set...
Sounds great to me HARM!

Ok, I found a few things coming up the last weekend of next month so it'll us give plenty of time to sort something out.
Something I try to get to every time they come around, the Blue Angels (http://www.riairshow.org/) are back at Quonset on 6/27-6/28.
And for something totally different, the New England Wild West Fest Rodeo (http://www.cowboyspirit.org/wildwestfest.html) in Marshfield Ma. from 6/26-6/28.
Anyone interested?

I'm interested in both, but don't know if I'll be around that weekend.

I almost booked a hotel for the weekend for the air show earlier today, I'm really happy I didn't. The rodeo is only about 15 minutes from where I live.

Went last year to Quonset, it was good, but the line up looks virtually the same - minus the infamous Red Arrows. I'll probably skip it this year, but the Rodeo looks good...probably go to that instead :)
