Went for a stroll around town the other week, and somehow ended up at a harpoon brewery event. Ended the night at Pier's Park (as suggested by you guys, thanks!). Take a look and let me know what you think :-)

werd.. I thought it was another guy I met randomly at a party last weekend. I had my camera out and he came up to me and started talking about POTN and his 50D. Also had a Flowerhorn or some cichild or discus on his phone he was showing me.
I just rescaped my planted tank. ADA 60P with 2x XP2 Canisters and lily pipes, pressurized co2, random ada glassware. I just broke my 2 intake lily pipes though
I have a black 580rwhp built TT G35 coupe.

dude nice walk. That skyline pic came out pretty good for not keeping the tripod steady. I've been trying for a skyline shot but it's always foggy out  I forgot how nice weather like that feels like!
Did you take any shots with your 17-55?

I haven't even been to one of those meets this year. I'm actually a regular over on YR too. My car wasn't finished up until a few months ago. Then I decided to do some bodywork. Taking off the topsecret bumper and putting on a K2 bumper and getting some stuff painted.. getting rid of my impul spoilers etc. Car is burning alotta oil too
Hopefully my car will be done sometime next week so I can drive it around before I leave for vacation.
I'll post pics of my tanks in a few weeks. I just tore them apart and rescaped due to me being out of the country for the rest of the summer.
I have a ADA 60P, ADA Mini-S, derimmed 10g, 5.5g derimmed, and a 2.5g bow lol If I had a larger apartment I would get a bigger tank for FW stingrays

Nice pics dude. I like #2 out of the 17-55 set. I have a 17-55 also. The IS is GREAT to have  I noticed my pictures are not as sharp if I'm zoomed in all the way, even with the Fstop set to 5.6+. Maybe I just have a crappy copy. Love the lens though

Any idea where in Boston the flyover is gonna happen or the best vantage point would be?
Harm
30th of June 2009 (Tue), 15:22
Well, assuming it will be over the USS Consitution, charlestown is a good bet ;)
Best vantage point I would think of, would be that really long pier down from 6th St / Terry Ring in charlestown...The one where you can get the water taxi from. Go to the bottom - you'll have a great view of the North End / Zakim Bridge / and a view from the water of the USS Consitution, the Charles river and most likely the fly over.
I am sure they would be coming up from Quonset (from the weekend's airshow that happened in RI), go right over / around the city, then fly over the river past Ye Olde Ship. Can't find anything online about their route though :(
Scottes
30th of June 2009 (Tue), 17:08
Yeah, I would get onto Pier 4, like Harm says. The Navy Yard piers are more likely to be packed with people.
Another option, if you just want the planes, is LoPresti Park in East Boston.

No, for me, this is fine...just a warmer version of back home (England) before I moved here. At least the rain isn't "sideways", and you can still venture out in T-shirt and shorts :)
The plus points of this slightly cooler than normal weather is that I don't need to turn on the AC so my electric bills are small :)

Hey everyone, if anyone is down on the Cape this weekend that huge Russian Tall Ship is at Mass. Maritime. They're leaving around 10:30 a.m. tomorrow and being to tall to take under the bridges they're gonna spin her around in the canal. Should be interesting to watch them pull it off. I'll probably go and watch opposite MMA if anyone else decides to go and wants to meet up.

Well folks, we are less than 2 weeks away on the Helo trip. Should be a great time... as of this writing he's agreed to have two choppers up and we can take pics of each other (<richard simmons> How fantastic!</richard simmons>), but that'll be cool as all of us are, at a door. I expect some funny faces. He doesn't want to take deposits (That's a first) because he'll be out there regardless. So either we show up with the cash or we don't. One caveat is that, we certainly need all 6. Without all 6, we'll end up spending more.
So just a reminder to folks July 18th, 2009, at 6pm. We'll be meeting at the Marshfield Airport, which is located at; 93 Old Colony Lane, Marshfield, MA 02050.

Wait a minute, I vaguely remember something of an ominous three hour tour elsewhere.... oh well whatever it was I'm sure it turned out ok.

Here's to praying Harm is a small dude.
So there is a weight limitation to the choppers, 3 passengers cannot exceed 600lbs. I myself am 220. My friend who is coming along is around 200.
Harm, Vin, Scottes and CDS?
If you have some issues with posting weight, just PM me... We may have to distribute weight a bit differently in this case. Or perhaps make 3 runs. We'll see how this goes.
Please respond folks.

http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=02116&hourly=1&yday=198&weekday=Saturday
50% chance of thunderstorms and precipitation all day long.
Can/should this be moved to Sunday, which is supposed to be a gorgeous day? They won't fly in thunderstorms, I'd think. And I don't want to fly in the rain.

Yeah... on the weight thing, we may need to make a third trip. I'll talk to him about that.
As for weather, i'm shooting a wedding on Sunday. So i may not be able to make it. However, Snir Mr Blonde has told me he's interested, so that may be possible. And i believe he's lighter than i am, which works out as well.
Goddamned rain. Well there are two ways of looking at this. Rain could be bad for color, sunset color, but if it's thick puffy clouds, could make for dramatic backgrounds also.
We'll play it by ear on Friday. We all know the weather can change in just an hour. And while we are on the alert, i don't want to call it off on Saturday yet. Just to get a concensus, who all can make it on Sunday?
Vin?

Original Plan:
1. 240lbs CDS
2. 300lbs. SCOTT
3. 180lbs HARM
= 720lbs
and in chopper two:
1. 220 MUMBLES
2. 165 AMOL
3. 190 HORNY
= 575
This is the optimal setup for distribution:
1. 240lbs CDS
2. 220lbs. MUMBLES
3. 180lbs HARM
= 640lbs
and in chopper two:
1. 300 SCOTT
2. 165 AMOL
3. 190 HORNY
=655

Hey guys,
I have 2 spare tickets to see U2 on Mon 21st Sept at 7pm at Foxboro / Gillette Stadium
Section 217, row 19, seats 19 & 20.
Family members cannot make it, so I am selling them at face value (no profiteering).
Each ticket costs $57.50 and a $15 booking fee per ticket.
If you, or if you know anyone who would be interested in them, let me know and PM me.
Don't worry, I won't be sitting next to you, my wife and I have other tickets. 1st come 1st serve. I'll be putting this same little selling ad on the Boston Flickr group forum site thing....
Cheers.

Ok so we are thinking possibly 3 flights. We may put Scott and CDS on their own flight as we are all a bit large and don't have any 100lb'ers around. I'm double checking with the pilot but it seems thus far 3 flights is fine, and will be at the same cost. Only thing is, we need to find 2 more folks. I have one extra here. So we essentially need one more person, assuming 3 flights works out.
Anyone else interested? We have one spot left.
Lastly, weather. The weather isn't looking so hot for Saturday, but we all know how this goes around here. I'll double check with the pilot but i think we wouldn't want to make a call on it until Saturday morning. Since the weather is so fickle. Also, if that's the case we may be able to start slightly earlier as well. Lush clouds can make for great backdrops as well. Anyone have restrictions on starting earlier if there is cloud cover? Say between 3-5pm?

I have something that I really need to attend at 2:00, for at least some time - at least 3:30. And it's in Worcester, so it's at least 1.75 hours travel to Marshfield.
In a nutshell, 5:30 is the earliest I could commit to.
Any earlier and I have to pick one event over the other - which would really, really suck to consider.
If I had to make a decision today, the helo trip would be the one to drop given the weather concerns. And then I would kick myself from here to Marshfield because I have been debating a helo trip for over a year, but my other event is not replaceable whereas a helo trip can be done any time I want to spend money.

Because it seems I do have a problem with it.. Liz had planned something knowing I was busy Saturday...
I'm thinking I should really just take a pass on this one guys, since I can;t do Sunday, and it would be much easier for you to plan this without wondering if I was coming on the odd chance we went Saturday...
That should also fix any weight issues... (2 in one copter and 3 in the other)

Similarly, like right now, it's blazing sunny out, but was forcasted for rain and thunderstorms. I'm hoping for the same on Saturday. I cannot do Sunday.
So if it's good enough weather on saturday, we still have everyone and things will go according to plan. 3 trips, hopefully things work out.
If we do sunday, i'm out and CDS is out.
So that leaves:
Ride 1
1. Vin
2. Amol
3. Harm
Ride 2
4. Scottes
5. Joe (Another friend of mine)
Everyone cool with that? We won't have the word until Saturday Morning...

Yep, i saw that. They also say 50% right now with rain and/or thunderstorms...
I'm going to try and keep a positive attitude on this one. As i really want to go. That being said, I've already ridden with him. And i'll be riding with him again, so if i cannot make it on Sunday it's not a huge deal to me. He's super nice and approachable and i'm still under the assumption that everyone really wants to go. We've worked around most issues up until now, so it's just a matter of weather right now.
If people feel like they'd rather i be there in the case of Sunday, then let me know and we can try to reschedule for another week.
Harm

I am cool with either day, any time, and I am fine with changing it to another weekend altogether if you guys want. I have no problems with that - Like Scottes says, it would really suck if you cannot make it yourself after all this trouble. So if the weather is looking like crap on Saturday, we should probably postpone it to another weekend when we know the weather will be really good.

4. Scottes
5. Joe (or replace joe with anyone from ride 1)
I did promise the pilot 6 passengers, so i'm not sure how this will end up playing out... i'll see what he has to say. My only issue with pushing it out to another weekend is that people tend to drop out over time. We are currently down 1, so i'm concerned we'll be down to one trip if we delay any further, which won't work... So the pilot is super cool in terms of us just showing up and figuring out the layout. So if we can get it to work this weekend either way, that'd be optimal at least in my head.

16th of July 2009 (Thu), 16:14

I'm flexible, but I'd *really* like to push it off. Even if Saturday's weather breaks a bit, these aerial shots tend to show long distances, so how will the humidity affect the shots? Probably a lot. Going this Sunday, without Brendan The Planner, seems so wrong.
Barring weather or some unforeseeable event, I will not willingly back out of a helicopter shoot, as it's been something I've wanted to do for quite some time.

You must remember Kelly's from "back in the day" right? They were *so* much better 20 years ago. I remember waiting in line at 1 AM in December, temperature in the single digits with a wind off the ocean. All because their clam plates were *so* good.
I now eat at Kelly's maybe once a year, and each time I think I should have driven to Ipswich to the Clam Box. :(

Absolutely. Let me know when you guys have 3 and agree on a weekend. I'll pass it by him and you'll all be setup. Just a heads up, he takes credit cards as well.
OH, and i have time to describe the trip now....
So basically we flew up the coast, passed Marshfield, Hull and the Islands. There was some haze that day, but on the way in that was a good thing, as i think we got some amazing shots of the haze and the island tops with the city in the background. Once we were in the city, we were close enough to things that it didn't adversely affect the shots.
Stuart needs to clear everything with logan once he passes hull. So he just clears stuff when them and they give him an altitude to maintain. Ours was a surprising 200FT. Yep, just 200FT off the ground, going up 93 north, just over the gas tanks. What attributed to this was the fact that logan was landing on runway 4R. So we had to stay below inbound traffic.
So we got over near Chinatown and hovered a bit, and went over by the Moakley courthouse. There was still a tall ship over there. We got some shots of that. Headed toward the Tobin bridge got some of that, the Bunker Hill monument (We could have thrown out a rope and repelled onto that thing), and then on the way to Fenway, a mediflight came into Mass General, we got out of his way and shot that helo landing... which was fun.
Then we circled Fenway a few times, the Cristian Science Center, and the Charles River. We shot back over where i live (he was willing to go 5 mins out of the way and have to make a call back to logan) and then we headed back the fast route (direct line) to Marshfield. I recorded video on the 5D MKII, but i haven't really messed with converting videos on it yet, so i'll need some help on that front.
So in any case, yes, Stuart is the man, he got us in lower than i would have ever expected he's nice as all hell and like i said before, just 'crazy' enough to push the limits to get you the shot. Oh, one last thing, he understand the issues with wide angle lenses, and this is important because with wide, when you shoot straight out, if you are shooting anything above 250th a second, you'll get the chopper blades in the shot. You could shoot 1/100th, but when in motion you'll end up with blurry pics. So his solution is to understand what you need to shoot, hover, and then he banks in such as way that the rotors go up and you tilt down and get the shot blade-free. So much so in fact, that over fenway he had the helo sideways. Literally, we must have been 90' because i have a shot of the other person in the helo looking down straight into fenway park.
Ok that should be enough.... whomever wants to organize the next trip, shoot me a PM. I'll post pics soon as i just realized a way to have time to get it done sooner rather than later.

Congratulations... How many years?
Oh and one last thing, i think for city shots we've all agreed the 24-105 is the best lens to have out there. Especially if full frame. If crop sensor you may want to bring something wider as well. We brought a 100-400 and a 70-200 and the 100-400 was never used once, and the 70-200 was used once by me at 70 and 200 on the Top of the Hub, to see if i could get people in the shot, since i was mostly using the 17-40. So anything above 100mm is really not needed.
Harm
20th of July 2009 (Mon), 11:02
will be 6 years on Aug 4th (mid week - so we are trying to see if we should go away the weekend before, or after).
17-85 doesn't seem so bad then if talking about wide angle lenses....just isn't an L lens, so it won't be super crisp :(
Scottes
20th of July 2009 (Mon), 13:01
Harm, I'm sure that other lenses will be available. I can bring a Tamrom 28-75 you can borrow for the entire flight. I'll also have a 10-20, 100-400, and 24-70 that all might be available at times. (You drop one, you bought one. :D )
Harm
20th of July 2009 (Mon), 13:26

20th of July 2009 (Mon), 13:49
I've heard people say that it's the softest of the ultra-wide zooms, but I've never pixel-peeped and have always been happy. It was really an experiement, thanks to seeing some of Brendan's shots when we were shooting side-by-side and my 17mm couldn't compare to his 10mm versions of the same scene. I now know that I do like ultra-wide, and will buy a better ultra-wide some time in the future. But it works well for now.
symbolphoto
20th of July 2009 (Mon), 13:58
Yeah the ultra wide certainly has it's uses, albeit limited.
On crop, the 10-22mm is a really great lens. We have some with that lens... they will be posted soon. I myself was happy with the 17-40. I do have a sigma 12-24 but it's minimum fstop is quite high and requires to really be stopped down to get the best out of it, hence the use of the 17-40 instead.
I'll have some pics up tomorrow afternoon.
