Mumbles knows the city better than any human alive I think! I'm in the same boat as you about itching to get out more than life allows right now. I'll have to pay more attention to this thread.

So where are the shots??

Hey Bryan! We are neighbors! Call me sometime! I was hooked up for Sat., but given my advanced age, cold etc., probably best I didn't make it!

But play hookey some day and we will get out early or late and make some images!

Nice, guys, nice. Sorry i should have had a few more varied locations this time. I guess since i'm so sick of the usual sites, that doesn't mean everyone else is. When we do this again, let's get a consensus of ideas on locations.

Brendan, let me know if you schedule another SnoMo trip! That was a blast!

Yeah, i'd like to do the snowmobile thing again. I'm running low on personal time, so i don't think i could coordinate it, but i would certainly attend if before April. I'm a bit busy with this whole Doorhof workshop. Which btw, i believe we've secured a studio finally, so it's come full circle. If anyone would like to attend, highly, highly recommended.

And we'll do another helicopter thing, once the green comes back in the Spring. I know 3-4 of you expressed interest again. I'm certainly ready. Just remember we need to go up in sets of 3.

I was just thinking about you the other day when I drove by Bella Pasta! I get out about once a month (it's tough to get out at all with the baby)or so for a sunrise down in Southern RI along the coast with some nsop guys. I'll let you know next time I plan on going. Actually, anyone is welcome to go.

You need a higher density of Eagles than Quabbin has to get decent shots unless there is a small feeding area. Quabbin is vast and I doubt a 400 would get you much.

Salt Lake City end of Jan or first week Feb, does have a few places where they are concentrated.

Also this time of year there are such spots along the Norther Mississippi, And I like Conowingo Dam in MD,

I heard there are Snowy Owls at Plum Island?? That is a bird I would love to shoot! I always thought you had to go North, maybe the Ottowa area to get them!

I have only been to Plum a few times and I guess I just don't know where to go cause I don't see much!

As for the Puffins on Seal Island, as I said, I really would like to get some Moms with fish in their bills for the chicks. I am trying to to get Captain Andy, to give me a high point date for that trip.

Other than that, I would also go another date just for the pure joys of shooting the many, many Puffins, Razorbills, Seals etc that just overwhelm you. Looking forward to it!! Big time.

If anyone wants to join me, just let me know and we can start a list. We could get as many as 15-18 on boat and price has been $100 each for several years. So worth it!

On one trip I went on midweek, we were about 7 people total and my Grandson and I had a blind to ourselves! Steve & Mrs, Vin, Brendan & Nat ??

Yeah i just emailed him to take a look at it. He'll have it fixed soon. It'll be good to see you! Finally. It's going to be pretty sweet. Some vendors have recently sweetened the deal and we are going to have a proper studio with roof terrace. Going to be some good portfolio worthy stuff there.

We are driving down. I'm taking all my Elinchrom gear down for him to use. You are free to get a ride down with us. Save yourself $130.

We'd certainly join you for dinner.

Don, if you have some experience with lights, i'd say go for the workshop, not just the seminar. But that's entirely up to you and your comfort level. I don't know how much you use lights...

Take a look over on the thread, the guy that took his workshop... look at his work. That's some impressive stuff.

Best place for birding around here is Allen's Pond in Westport. Not this time of year, though. Great Meadows in Concord, MA is good, too. More birds, but the sun and backgrounds aren't as good as Allen's Pond.

Eagles are garbage birds. If you want to shoot a real man's bird, go for Ospreys. Eagles steal food and eat trash. Ospreys eat only what they catch, and if they dive into the water they have a 90% kill rate. Eagles suck in comparison to Ospreys.

I've done the Orpreys in Maine many, many times now. That is usually a great trip, but sometimes can be a bust since it's dependent on the weather. Not only for when you're there, but for the 3 days previous. Timing the tide is also beneficial.

First time I was there I took about 1200 pictures. It was non-stop shooting, from the moment I stepped out of the car. (An osprey flew 10 feet overhead, with a fish, and the fish dripped blood all overt he hood of my car.) At one point there were 22 ospreys flying overhead.

The last time I was there I took about 100 shots, just because I got bored waiting for a good shot so I started shooting anything that flew by. I still ended up with 2 keepers, but I've got over 100 hours of experience shooting these birds.

If anyone is interested in doing this in May let me know. We can even make a weekend out of it - it is a 4-hour drive from Boston, so a day trip is manageable but tough on the body. And it rules out the best time to shoot them, which is about 7:30 AM, when the sun is behind you and lighting up the inlet where they dive.

A 300mm is sufficient for this shoot. End of May / beginning of June.

I almost always do an Osprey weekend, so I'll be going. I'll try to keep an eye on things (weather, tide, etc.) and keep folks up to date.

We have 3 options:
1. Watch the weather, short notice, single-day trip. Been there, done that, no personal interest. But this might work for someone who wants to meet others up there.
2. Plan an advance date. We can get the tide correct, but the weather is a dice-roll. And bad weather can make the entire weekend a total waste.
3. Wing it - check the weather every Wednesday and go when it looks good. This might mean a bad tide, and staying at whatever motel just happens to have rooms. This can be tough since a 3-day weekend is best, since that gives 2 chances at prime shooting at 7:00 AM, and not everyone can get a Friday off at a moment's notice.

If 3 or 4 of us took option 2, we could also rent a boat with a guy we've used in the past, and tour some of the rivers in the area. Eagles, ospreys, seals, and a great blue heron rookery are guaranteed. And we can get close. This shot is full-frame, no cropping, at 400mm:

Same here. I usually take a week off which allows me to head up there. The weekends can be a little crazy with all the tourists and all.

Also, last year they had a huge festival at the spot, and that seemed to drive off all the ospreys for the following 2 weeks. We may want to plan to go before that Memorial Day weekend, which means any 2-3 days before May 27.

I will check with Andy to see what the Puffin activity is expected to before Memorial day. If there is reasonable activity, I would attach a Puffin day to the Osprey trip and anyone with the flexibility could join me then.

But, I will go on a weekend as well with anyone without the midweek flexibility.

I told you weddings were a nightmare!

Yeah, the Osprey head south. They arrive in Southern RI around Galilee in EARLY May. The problem with RI is there are no restricted feeding spots that you can use that I know of. All you can do is shoot fly byes and nest shots and I only know of one nest where you can get on a bridge and get anywhere near a close shot.

Connecticut has a spot with a people tower level with an active nest where you can get feeding shots!

Yeah but when you have a tight schedule, which most wed photogs do, you go to a location and work, and then get right back on a plane to deal with your other customers. Or setup for the next job. Rarely do you get to make a vacation out of it, unless it's off-season for your locale.

I've started to realize that i need to listen to the advice of others. MY head is just a but thick to it takes a while to absorb! :)

Have they solved the hot pixel issue, if it is a factor? Other than that, most of the complaints seem to be related to Canon's crippling of movie controls to protect their movie cameras (Corporate Greed!).

I wanted to get one when they were released, but I thought the movie thing was irrelevant to me. Then all the talk about so many hot pixels and even some low light complaints which scared me!

Just bought a 5D Mark2. Should have it Thursday! Now watch, Canon will come out with a new billion pixel machine that takes HDR and has a built in 800mm lens.

Speaking of 800MM, I am tiring of Artie Morris @ Birds as Art always waving it in us poor folks faces! LOL

PS: I think that to get a rise out of Snir, you have to go to the Nikon Forum??? Double LOL

Just don't set your expectations extremely high for the autofocus. It's just like the old 5D, as far as i'm concerned.

But the resolution and ISO is what really makes it shine. The video is a nice to have, as we talked about. Though, don't think you'll record video and just upload it directly. You need software to transcode it to a slightly compressed format that is acceptable to the web.

I've had a 5DMK2 for about a year and I love it, while I can't compare it to any of the 1D Series Bodies but I have had the original Canon Digital Rebel (300d I believe) then I went to a 30D, then a 40D which I still have and not the 5DMK2 and I think that they have progressively gotten better and better.

My friend has an original 5D and I think that the new on is better but I wouldn't be sad if I only had one of the originals ones either. I don't do video, don't plan on it / could care less but I know it is the direction that they are all heading so it is what it is.

I think the auto focus with all of my lenses is very fast and accurate, I've had all my other bodies hunt way more then I have with the 5DMK2. I am very happy with the purchase even though I can't call it an investment like all my lenses but still think it is worth it.

Easy mistakes LOL. Nat had her as my Daughter!

I was happy you used the shot of you guys approaching the tower, that I made down in the corner by the piano! BUT. . . . From the time that I made the shot and collapsed my tripod (I cannot hand hold the 500) , You were opposite Nat's table. You guys were really hauling butt!

Thanks on both.

That GBH was a funny day. I went up there (Great Meadows, Concord) and was walking along when I heard a sound. I stopped, and he was about 6 or 7 feet away from me. I backed up to the far side of the dike, and just barely got him in focus (14' min focus on the 400mm) for a few portrait shots. When he cocked his head to the side I got ready, and he grabbed that fish. I fired off about 5 frames.

When I saw this one on the LCD, well, I just called it a day and went home. Nothing better was going to happen that day.

I had spent 11 minutes with the camera in my hand.

nice, Scott!

Thanks!
