Wait, you live in Arizona now? I thought you were just avoiding us!

She doesn't like us anymore?

I like you guys just fine... it was the cold that drove me out! Although it's been pretty chilly here in Arizona the last few days, too. I'll be back for a visit this summer but I'll be perfectly content if I don't see another snowflake for quite a while!

Harm
10th of March 2010 (Wed), 08:46
Lovely shots, Brendan. See, next time i'll bring a wide angled lens!

And Becca, I'd be happy NOT to see another snowflake for a long, long time!

Harm

Vin and Scott, we can go up anytime. You guys just say the word.

Harm, it's mostly in post. If i showed you the original you wouldn't be so impressed. :)

Harm
10th of March 2010 (Wed), 13:56
Even still....I look at mine, I am not well versed in PP stuff (I only use Lightroom and from time to time, Gimp2) and my shots come out like garbage - But regardless of that, you can still tell the difference between the 40D and 5DII.

I have a technical question - one that is more a curiousity than anything else. Is there a correlation between print sizes and the camera / MPs?

I am just curious on what the max "sane" size is of printing something taken with a 40D.

symbolphoto
11th of March 2010 (Thu), 09:23
Well the more megapixels the less chance of you needing to upsize to do large prints. For instance, you can pretty much do a 12x18 print @ 300DPI natively on a 5DMKII. Natively meaning we don't need to upsize the image. Whereas on a 40D you'd probably need to upsize to get that resolution.

Upsizing is not always a good thing. If you need the detail, it can be lost in upsizing since you are basically making pixels.

That's the only difference i'm aware of. But i'm sure there are more technical people that can explain other differences as well.

symbolphoto
11th of March 2010 (Thu), 09:25
Btw, Harm, post a link to one of your CR2's. Lets process the same image and see the difference in results. I'm willing to bet the difference you are seeing (especially on internet photos) is simply the difference in the way we process. Especially including sharpening.

I think it may be a good test. Before you pull the trigger on something else. ;)

Harm
11th of March 2010 (Thu), 09:57
Well of course it is a case of how you process things. Everyone has their own little ways. That, and not having Photoshop, or a decent machine (this laptop which is really a work laptop has a screen that makes all my colours look like garbage!!)

It isn't about pulling the trigger on anything, I am just curious and learning about limitations and how far I can push them or get up to them!

That and you have me stumped with a CR2 file! Never heard of it before.

symbolphoto
11th of March 2010 (Thu), 10:11
Ah ok, I wasn't sure if you were attributing it more to the camera or not.

cr2? The raw file? Are raws not .cr2 on 40Ds? I don't have one, so i'm not sure, i would think they would still be cr2.

But yeah, anyway, just offering. :)

Harm
11th of March 2010 (Thu), 10:17
Oh yeah....DUUUUUUUUUUUH me! Clearly I haven't woken up.

I'll email you a raw file (which is a CR2 file!)

There does seem to be a slight quality difference, but i'm wondering if it has to do with the fact that you were at 2.8 vs. say closer to F8. That probably has a little to do with it.

Harm
11th of March 2010 (Thu), 13:43
I also used LR2 and you used Photoshop...

Could be....I guess the next time you do another stunt like that, I'll have to shoot at F8 - F11 compared to 2.8 and see what comes about.

I think I originally started at F8, but in order to get quicker shots (since we were moving) I opened it up to 2.8 for a faster shutter speed...I just forgot to put it back whilst we were more in hover mode!

Nice shots guys.

I have made 20x30 prints from my old XTi, which is pretty much the same sensor as the 40D. The biggest I've made from my 40D is 12x18, but I have no doubt the 20x30 would look great. I'm not all that tech savvy on the whole upsizing thing, but I import my RAW files into CS4 using Adobe Camera RAW at 300ppi. I'm not sure if the lab does the upsizing from my file.

looks like mumbles saturated and sharpened in photoshop...nothing that can't be done in gimp or even lightroom...

I did more than that, but you can't really see it on a 900px wide photo which was shot at 2.8. I did some high pass sharpening on it as well but you can't really see it in this photo.

I just got a tablet for the first time and it has me doing things that i would have been too lazy to do when only using a mouse. Not on this photo, but generally speaking.

Anyhow, can't wait for April with Frank! I'm actually seeing him in 2 weeks as we'll be in Amsterdam. But the New York workshop is going to be the fun one. Be great to meet some characters on this forum. :D

Harm
12th of March 2010 (Fri), 12:58
Cool....right, I just plug my CF card into a card reader, and it churns it out. Is there any way how to know & control the ppi? Like I said, more curious than anything else.

The images don't look crap on smugmug, but you just never know on paper :D

Hi gang! Blast from the past here, just dropping in to say hello...Hope everyone is doing well! I've been on quite the hiatus from the photography world and trying to get back into things with the hobby. Its nice to see some old faces and names here in the recent postings and look forward to meeting the new folks since...and Mumbles, congratulations on the proposal - that is a FANTASTIC story! Hopefully I can catch up with everyone on a future meet!

Hiro

Well the first time i had to go up for a client. So i didn't have much choice. The last time was late notice because it was for another client. We have one on April 11th, but it's for a shoot.

Let's do this, If the groupon thing doesn't work out, or doesn't satisfy your interest, i'll coordinate another one soon. It's no surprise the other one is doing 45 minutes flying time and 1-2 hours classroom. He's running the flight time at a loss(Fuel and flight hours costs), hoping to convert people into taking flying lessons.

How does $100. per person for 1 hour anywhere you want to go sound? I'll doublecheck and run it by Stuart, the pilot.

Brendan, a bit off topic but does Stuart have a site to visit regarding lessons? I've know idea why but I always wanted to fly be it rotary or fixed wing. I suppose I could go to the airport(I live in the next town over) and inquire about it, but I'd hate to waste his time with endless questions if he could be doing something else.

TIA.

It takes 11 minutes to get to downtown. The good thing about coming from Marshfield is that you pass by beautiful beaches and the harbor islands on the way to Boston.

Also, the thing with Stuart is he's willing to push the envelope. Not in a dangerous way, but just ask harm about flying through Boston. We were flying in between buildings lower than many rooftops. You want a particular shot, he'll put it in hover and let you get it.

The helicopters are quite stable too. So it's really easy to maneuver... It's really one of the few ways, these days, to get a unique angle on the city.

Well if Big Belly Weekly were to do a pictorial sure, I'd throw my hat in the ring.

One more question, does he do and if so how's his impression of Arnolds' "get to the chopper"?

I'll have to see about heading over to the airport tomorrow and see if I'll be able to swing it in the immediate future. I just paid for my Moms B-Day trip with her ol' man to travel about the southwest for two weeks to see the sites(that put a bit of a ding in the play money fund). That and the P&S/batteries/SD cards that UPS just dropped off that she also needed along with a GPS for her ol' mans B-Day this past Sunday.

Heck, I'm sure I would've been able to knock out a few lessons for the price of that.:rolleyes:

Well the cool thing about Stuart is like "he's one of us". He's not stuffy and will pretty much do whatever you ask. Without killing you. We've been whipping between buildings downtown a few times, i felt like i was in Die Hard. Seriously.

Well he's not there everyday. Best to call him: 781.308.0826. Be sure to mention my name so he doesn't charge the regular rates. Just tell him you know me on the photography forums. He was flying down to Martha's Vineyard today. Not sure what his schedule is for tomorrow.

April is good. I won't be able to attend(Weddings), but Harm has met him and assuming he plans to attend can also give you guys the run down. I'm pretty much in daily/semi-daily contact with Stuart. So i'll let you know when a good date is in April for a tour around the city.

Yup, Stu is a good fella. Very laid back, easy going, not full of himself at all for being a pilot. Safe pilot too, even with no doors on - never felt afraid at all with his flying. In fact after the f*&#$*g freezing wind abated, I was shoving my lens out despite him going all over the place in between buildings...

I avoid the risque stuff for the reason in that article...if someone wants to make your life miserable, it'd be fairly easy to do even if it's not true because you get tried in the court of public opinion and the media doesn't dig very far before publishing a d*mning article)-:
Of course, if the guy is a predator, he should be strung up though...

Hey guys, i have two CPS camera straps just sitting around here, still in the bag. If anyone wants em, let me know. Stipulation: you have to come pick them up. I live in Dorchester. I won't shoot you. I promise.

Just trying to get rid of them.

I have a couple as well and couldn't believe when I saw one on e-bay sell for upwards of $100 which makes me think I should hold on to mine for a while :)

What is a CPS strap? And if you're giving them away, heck I'll take one off your hands :)

Its a "Canon Professional Services" Neck Strap. You get one when you join CPS which for the price you pay you'd think that you would get more than one :)

Here's one on e-bay... You sure you want to give them away :)

Hey, I put this in "Service needed" but I thought it was relative to post it here as well.
I'm throwing my girlfriend a surprise birthday party at Fajitas and Ritas (Across from commons)
Friday april 9th at 7:45pm

I'm looking to save some money, and instead of hiring some TFCD shooter on craiglsist I'd like to extend the opportunity to POTN members. If your looking for some experience let me know. Its going to be a large group of 21-25 yr olds having drinks and food. Expect to shoot for about 2 hours and maybe longer if you want to come to the bar after with us for a while. I'll cover your meal and some drinks if you of age.

The resturant is kind of dark so an off camera flash is absolutely neccesary and probably something wide since its a little tight.

Email/PM me if your free.

That made me laugh out loud. I was thinking it may be in someone's best interest to pay the ebay rate and avoid having to go to Dorchester.

I just stumpled across this thread and will keep in eye on it going forward. I live down the south shore, but I was born in Dorchester so I figured it was ok to take a shot.

We shoot 5DMKII and keep a 7D for backup. (As of Thursday). I don't mind the focusing of the 5DMKII. I used the original 5D for several years and just loved it. I guess i'm wacky like that.

Man that 7D must be lightning fast compared to the mkii!!!
I used my friends' 5D's for a while and the IQ quality is intense, why I got the mkii.

Me too! I live in the area and my professor decided to go out with us (3 students). So we got a reservation at Cheesecake and the 3 of us semi-pregamed at Pour House before meeting up with the prof for dinner at Cheesecake and Clash of the Titans 3D at Regal Fenway.

DO NOT watch Clash of the Titans. That was an epic failure.

We tried to hit up the Convention Sunday but by the time we got there, they were closing already. Went grocery shopping instead. We did a group of kids dressed up as Team Fortress 2 characters, gave me a good laugh.

Edit: Here's a quick shot I snapped. Not the best since I was walking back with groceries from Trader Joe's.

Hit Blue Hills, Forest Hill Cemetary, Museum of Tansportation Park, Jamaica Plain Park/Pond and Arnold Arboretum all on the same day.. It's all within like 5 minutes from each other. Maybe even make it to Castle Island for sunset.

East Boston's Piers Park is a great location for sunset. I'd suggest there.
