Ah, so i didnt miss much afterall though the chit chat over lunch must have been great. Nothing like sitting and discussing photography over a nice cup of coffee :)
We should meet up sooner the next time, one learns so much from meeting each other. Maybe meet up one September weekend and plan a night shoot.

As long as you're not hoping to get a sunset over the ocean horizon in gloucester ;-)
Seriously though, it was great meeting up with everyone! Cari and I had a blast - We definitely must do it again sooner than later. Sorry Cari and I had to run after lunch since we both had out of town trips to prep for the following morning... And speaking of trips, I'm still on mine here in Chicago and won't be back home until late Sunday. I didn't even have a chance to review the photos I shot before leaving for Chicago...so I apologize for not posting anything. It will have to wait until I get back home and re-gain access to my gear, as well as some spare time to review/post :-)
PS: Speaking of spare time, I promise I'll find some to update my signature one of these days Daman ;-)

Sure, i hope there is more than 2 people though.
We can meet somewhere with plenty of parking and take 1 or 2 cars from there. If i were to suggest a place to park it'd be around the new convention center. Since you won't want to be taking the "T" with all your camera gear, here is a nice easy location with loads of parking at night. And is central to all highways leading to boston.
Address is 415 Summer Street, Boston MA 02210. You can park just about anywhere near this location. You can't miss it, it's a huge, HUGE white overhang, usually well lit at night.
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&searchtab=home&formtype=address&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&level=&cat=&address=415+Summer+Street&city=boston&state=ma&zipcode=

It's about a 5 minute walk from south station. I'm assuming you'd be coming in on the "C" train though, if that is the case for any greenline train, you "COULD" walk from Park street. About a 15 minute walk. Otherwise switch to the red and just get off at South Station.
Once you get out of South Station walk away from downtown and towards the water on summer st. Worse comes to worse we can find you down at South Station.

For interest, I've made my Google Earth Boston locations available: http://www.itsanadventure.com/postimages/Boston.kmz

Do we have any ideas for a plan of locations? My favorites are the Hyatt at the airport (Skyline) and Pier 4 by the Constitution (Zakim) - but both take some time in a car. I also have a hankering for checking out the Stata Center over off memorial Drive - has anyone seen this at night? Is it worthwhile?
I'm up for just about anything though. Got an itch to take some night shots.

Just over a week to go! I know Blonde got his 24-70L ;)
Locations... well you and i seem to share a lot of locations ;), but i have a few different ones we didn't get to hit last time. So those will be good ones to hit. Never heard of the Stata Center... i'm sure i pass it all the time though. If anyone has suggestions we can do that as well.

The Stata Center is a pretty funky looking building that could look fairly intense at night, when all the lines can't be seen:
http://www.csail.mit.edu/events/news/stata.html
Not a very big picture... http://web.mit.edu/evolving/images/stata_thumb.jpg
Some of the other MIT buildings have potential, too, like the Domed one and such. Just an idea.

i wonder how it's lit at night? Hmmm.
That second, tiny picture I posted is actually a night shot. But with the size of the building and all those angles I'm sure there's a lot that could get done with that subject.

sounds good Scotts. so, looks like we have enough spots to cover that night.
just an update: i got home from school and the lens was waiting for me. it is a beauty but it sure is heavy ;)

Nice, well not certain yet, of course it's never certain in Boston, but the weather so far looks ok. Can we start building a list of people that will attend?

I'm in.
At the same time, can we build a list of places that people would prefer to hit, then perhaps we can build a route to hit them without driving back and forth around the city?
I'm pretty much open for anything. I have a hankering for Pier 4 over by the Constitution to get a shot of the Zakim, but I'm not going to push for it since it's out of the way.
Also, how did you guys do this last time? On foot? Car? Subway?
blonde
16th of October 2006 (Mon), 11:00
last time we did it by cars but we only managed to hit 2-3 spots because of me (i had to leave). i do think that it was a good idea to meet up some place and than take 2-3 cars and go to the spots. however, this time we should have at least 2 cars from people that can stay as long as they want..
as for the spots, i am going to trust you and mumbles and let you work it out..

if anyone knows where the Boston DPW parking garage is let me know cuz you get an unbelievable view of boston from the top of the garage.
symbolphoto
16th of October 2006 (Mon), 13:14
Well we don't have a predefined list of locations, we generally start at the convention center because there is a nice view of the city and ships there, and we work our way outward from there. I can compile a list, but we generally have 2-3 cars and follow each other to the places, so it's pretty simple.

Mumbles pointed me to this thread. If I'm back in time (or awake enough) coming back from NHIS, I hope to make it. :)
I got my XTi last week and have been playing a bit with it and would like to see what other lenses do before actually dropping the coin on some of them.
So, I'm a tentative for now.

I like this idea, and we should keep our eyes open for strategically-placed garages. There's on near Durgin Park that shuld provide some nice views - a red brick one that was extremely visible from the old Rt 93 southbound. That should have views towards the water and some views over Faneuil Hall Marketplace towards downtown.

There is no particular lens better suited to night than others... you can use the dam kit lens. Long exposure and a good tripod is about all you need.

I'm only bringing 4 lenses. Maybe 5.
:-)
17-40 in case I need to go wide.
50mm f/1.2 in case I need to go wide open.
28-70 for most of it.
85mm because I love this lens.
28-135 or 100-400 in case I need to go past 85mm. Maybe. I really need to get a good, fast, wide prime over 100mm.

I'm up for staying out as late as anybody wants to... I have nothing going on on sunday (other than sleep)
Also... on a side note... if anybody is wanting to stay out late, I can always pick you up on the way... I'm in the Billerica area.

Ok, well everything is looking good. If you are coming in on the Pike you'd want to get off at South Station, and then take a right on summer street. Mapquest link was provided, so you may want to use that.
Anyhow, weather appears to be ok. We have many sites to hit, and if anyone has any suggestions feel free to post them.
So far we have;
1. Falcon peir and the waterfront area. (Courthouse and another undisclosed location ;))
2. Downtown area with parts of the North End.
3. Cambridge, along storrow/mem and MIT.
4. South East Expressway, over by Mass Ave, great garage shots.
5. Over by the Zakim bridge of course.
6. Will scope a couple of areas downtown before saturday to add to the list.
Some of these will be repeats for the last crew, but it'll give you a second chance at perfecting that shot you may have missed last time.

you guys should come over and check out the www.northeastfoto.com site... we're looking ofr hot spots for shots in the northeast and can use more input, plus, we do member shoots all the time, the next one I believe is in Branford CT. at the trolley museam on Nov.14th ( if I remember right) come on by and check it out. there are a few of us POTN'ers there.

Nahhh, Its in the daytime and its not really a museam, its the Trolly Museam and they are doing some kind of thing with some older NYC cars they are bringing down for the day.. plus there are tons of other spots around the CT shoreline. we'll see how it goes though as I havent been there in forever and cant remember enough about it to be honest!

bluej, i think i know where the DPW garage is, that's also the BPD garage if i'm not mistaken. One of our sites is directly across from it, i don't think their garage is all that high. But i may be thinking about the wrong location.
The location we are meeting is 415 Summer street, it's a huge convention center with a huge, white, lit overhang. There is plenty of parking along that stretch of Summer Street.

i went all the way on top i think its either 4th or 5th floor so its a little bit of height we could always stop by for like 10min and if theres nothing interesting screw it lol
So i get off the exit and make a right and were meeting at the pier is that right?

certainly not trying to hijack this post, but I'll be in boston (waltham to be exact) november 17-22 to be with my mother who will be getting hip surgery done. Is anyone out there in the boston area willing to show me a couple good spots? I'm interested in everything and would just love to see (or get reccomendations for) some of the hot spots of photography in boston. not necessarily looking for all the cliche postcard shots, but would love insight into what you guys shoot...That way it'd be nicer and more enjoyable for me when I come home--I'd actually have an idea of where to shoot.
if you are interested in being my photo safari tour guide :p or just a buddy to go shoot with in november, do let me know. A PM or email would be great, although you could certainly reply in this thread.
To those of you who are meeting this saturday, have fun! If you guys feel like rescheduling, and want to meet up again in about a month, I'll be in town...so lemme know! thanks.
