Hi gang!
I just might be able to make it! I know you're all referencing the meeting spot as 'convention center'...I assume you mean the BCEC (Boston Convention Expo Center), which may be helpful for those who know it by it's official title. There's a picture on their website of the infamous white overhang...URL below...see you at 7pm there if I can make it! -Hiro

Do any of you pack an LED flashlight? If you have one, could you bring it? (LED with white light)
Want to try something. :)
I'm heading up to NHIS early tomorrow morning, but I should be in Bahstin for 7pm. :) Auto-x at Devens the next day... two days of driving & picture taking.

I pack a LED light as well. Knife and a few other things... a.k.a M60.
Convention Center, 7pm, everything looks good. Plenty of STREET parking, no meters etc...
So i just wanted to run this by everyone;
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/10/20/pumpkin_stacking_begins_for_life_is_good_festival_ on_common/
Seems there is a crapload of pumpkins that are going to be laid out on the common, could be a great photo opp. If anyone is really interested, we can certainly make our way over there.

Hi gang!
Yeah, what can I say...been busy as all get...one of these days, I'll actually do some post-processing/editing/organizing of my shots... But, it's looking good that I'll escape from work tonight and join you all!
As for my equipment, if you're talking about my outdated signature equipment inventory, I keep it that way on purpose for Daman  No need to worry - I still have all my gear...

i just went thru my pics and im only satisfied with 2 pictures, the rest were blurry and it was just way to windy.
Here are the 2, just a tiny bit of auto-levels and resize.I guess the tripod doesnt help in 40mph winds, or anyone is free to tell me what else the problem is lol.
I found a couple dead pixels in a bunch of my pics, anyone know how this can be fixed?

Vic, I'd bet money that it's your kit lens that's the problem.... The fact that you really don't know where infinity focus is coupled with the difficulties in autofocus at night probably caused a lot of your focus problems.
I'm pleasantly suprised how good my shots turned out with all the wind and cheap tripod.
Mine are at: http://www.whataride.net/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=3833&g2_navId=xcff76728
For some reason I can't link pictures out of my gallery pages into posts on potn.

Jason, you've got some great shots - the traffic, the pumpkin shot DPP_0319s - great stuff!
Mumbles, that 12mm is insane. I love the first shot of the pumpkins.
Vic, that shot from the top of the (apparenty illegal) parking garage is great. I **really** have to go searching for some parking garages with good views and traffic. Very cool stuff.

I think the roof was to weak and shaky for us all, the wind didnt help, and the coldness didnt help either. Im very very very surprised how incredibly sturdy that tripod is in the wind.
I think the #1 reason SOME of our shots were blurry wasn't because of the wind but the vibration travel thru the floor
I learned not to shoot with a UV at night lol. I love car light shots ,its a beautiful thing.I really wanted to go to that bridge to but oh well
I love your shots Scott very very awesome, it was awesome meeting you guys.

Scottes, your second shot of the Zakim... notice the BankNorth isn't blown out. I'd call that a success. But parts of the bridge are... so yeah, i hear that. Try the Shadow/Highlight menu off Image-->Adjustments-->Shadow/Highlight, that can probably bring the bridge back. I also noticed on your shots and snir's the color on the bridge is purple... it's weird, i'm not sure if that light changes, but i swear in person it looks blue, might be my monitor calibration.
And if we do this again, probably next year, here are a few i was talking about...
If we went further down that park on the other side of the zakim, there is a cool construction site and it has some pretty interesting architecture...

Good meeting you guys and next time we'll have a whole new set of places, i'll try to 50/50 the Possibly get in trouble Vs. the No trouble at alls. I didn't realize how many illegal spots i go to until i brought you guys...

Yeah, I just need to go through the HDR again - HDR is the reason why the sign isn't blown, but lack of skill/patience with the process is why the bridge is dark.
I didn't notice the purple... I agree it looks more blue to the naked eye, but I think it does move a little towards purple. I'll check the WB and play with it a bit.
There are certainly more places and now that the large part of the Boston Crew has been to these places, i'll be scoping out new ones.

That first shot is very cool, and I like the last shot a lot. North Station could be cool - though they'd probably stop us. But image an exposure where the train's coming in and stops - but the exposure is only half done when the train stops. That could be cool.
The T Yard has got to be illegal. :-)

Snir, your website could be done by then, we'll see. Nov 5th is all you, for sure.
Scottes, i'll take a stab at what i know on these locations,
1. Garage near Copley, i didn't even know it had a roof. Good find, that'll be a good spot for two reasons... the mass pike is just below and there is a garden right across teh street. Public.
2. Trainyard, yeah there has been a nice shot of the expressway from here, i've been here a couple times, not bad, certainly worth trying. Public.
3. Traffic shot from bridge, these can be ok, i've shot from here, nothing stellar. Public.
4. Zeigler foot bridge, yeah this is a good spot, right over storrow and now that some leaves are falling the esplanade may look through as well. Public.
5. Another Garage- Mass Genereal Garage, there are new buildings around this structure, you can't see much at all. Public, but security could give us a hard time.
6. Zakim shots - this location is on the opposite side of the park that we hit last, same shot, different angle. I've been here and didn't like it. But could be a personal choice. Public.
7. Coast gaurd next to impossible to get anywhere near, we can try though. Not Public.
8. Whats this place, courtyard inside the new federal courthouse. It's nice in there for architectural shots... good find also. I forgot about that place.
9. Aquarium garage, never been. Have no idea. Let's do it. Public
10. Herald Garage, never been, not public, probably nothing much there. IMO. Not Public.
11. PO Square trellises , for sure. Public.
12. Faneuil Hall Garage, never been, let's do it. Public.
13. Haymarket, yeah this one is the question mark. Fleetcenter may be blocking... not entirely sure. Worth a shot.
Public.

Guys, just so you know, all the people in bright green shirts at the common are convicted felons, and can't have their pictures taken because of CORY protections( basically so they will be able to get jobs after they are free). So if they are in any of your shots, either blur the crap out of them, or CROP. The officials were getting pretty bitchy whenever I went near them with a camera.

There i an event at the Boston Convention Center - The American Public Health Association is meeting there with 13,000 attendees. http://www.mccahome.com/events.html
But most of the events end at 6:00 PM, so it should be OK.

Great shots y'all.
I am being forced to Boston for Thanksgiving with the Monsters in Law so if any one would like to get together, I am not up there for very long but maybe we can all get together? I will have to talk it over with my hubby and make sure he does not have any plans. We will be up that way 11/23-11/27.
I think I will feel inadequate shooting with anyone up there seeing y'all's glass...

I suppose we could pull another meet together. I figure ever time we go out we find something new, so we'll have a research a bit to find some even newer stuff. I know this is short notice, but is anyone up for some shooting tomorrow night? It would be a shame to waste the weather, which is supposed to be like last time.
Dang, weatherundreground is reporting "Slight Chance Light Rain Showers" but a 10% chance of precipitation, and 55% cloud cover.
Sunset 4:29, but Nautical Twilight at 5:30. Might have a real sunset with 55% clouds, so it might make a good shot of the Zakim from the next pier past Old Ironsides, or over at the Hyatt Hotel on the airport.
Moon is 2/3 full, but it doesn't rise until 9:00 PM. That would probably be a good time to be over on Memorial Drive shooting downtown with the moon rising over it.
Anyone, depending on weather?

Friday is supposed to be clearing in the late afternoon. Depending on cloud cover I'm thinking about hit Piers Park in East Boston and hope for a shot of a sunset over the skyline. If that is the case then I will be there at 4:00. Anyone else up for this, clouds/weather depending? Same for Saturday, again depending on clouds & weather.

Scottes

I say 3:30, and then head over to East Boston exactly at 3:30. The color will come out starting just after 4:00. I checked the maps and the sun declination at time of sunset, and LoPresti Park looks like it would have the best angle to get a sunset over the skyline. However, Piers Park isn't too shabby either, and it doesn't have that kinda-ugly spit of "land" sticking out into the harbor. Also, I Google Earth'd the next pier down from Piers Park, which is also a possibility since it sticks out further. We should be able to park at Piers Park and walk over and out to the end of that next pier.
That is, if everyone *wants* to shoot the skyline from there again. I am certainly up for other ideas.
symbolphoto
17th of November 2006 (Fri), 18:23
Sure, 3:30 it is. I was out at the waterfront today and the sun set at 4:57. So we'll be good to make our way to E.Boston by then.
Scottes
17th of November 2006 (Fri), 18:27
Yeah, but you can start getting color at 4:15, particularly high in the sky which is what we'd want - to see color above the skyline.

hey Scott, could you describe your photomatix workflow a bit, if ya don't mind? I'm messing around with it and could do with some guidance. gracias :D
Scottes
23rd of November 2006 (Thu), 21:03
Actually I use Photoshop, since Photomatix likes to destroy night shots by not keeping the black parts black.
In actuallity I probably just don't know how to use it correctly.
For HDR night shots I've found a few things out. To get details in the lights you have to go very very low in exposure. Anywhere from -7 EC to -3 EC, depending on the light. I really like to get the details of the light fixture, if at all possible, so I go very dark. I will then take a shot every stop until it's overexposed by about 1 stop.
If anything is moving, like cars going by, don't even try HDR.
Scottes
23rd of November 2006 (Thu), 21:33
Here's another of the Mother Church plaza. This one was particularly tricky to do the HDR. Those big light globes caused fits, yet I wanted the final image to clearly show the lighting elements inside the globes. This is, effectively, an 9-stop spread, going from -6 EV to +2. I say "effectively" since I had to take the lowest exposure and run that through RSE at -3, -2 and -1 EC. This one was interesting to do.
