One last one for tonight. The North End, as seen from the Navy Yard in Charlestown. No HDR.

Here's another of the Mother Church plaza. This one was particularly tricky to do the HDR. Those big light globes caused fits, yet I wanted the final image to clearly show the lighting elements inside the globes. This is, effectively, an 9-stop spread, going from -6 EV to +2. I say "effectively" since I had to take the lowest exposure and run that through RSE at -3, -2 and -1 EC. This one was interesting to do.

Nice! That came out perfect!

Ok, who if anyone from here was in Boston Common Friday (today) at around 4pm shooting the hawk?? I was there and was dragged off by my husband before I could properly talk to the two canon users there.
Great shots by the way!! Very beautiful!

btw, the other guy was using N$%^n so it is a good thing you didn't talk to him, they are all evil as you know ;) j/k, he was actually a very nice guy and having a second shooter with me was a great help in spotting the Hawk everytime he moved to a different location.

I was wondering if I'd run into a POTN member up there, but by that time I was sooo tired, we walked from Calumet to the Common and we had been up since 7am. We try to get it all in when we are on vacation.
BTW...hubby not broken, just mad that he does not have a camera also and gets pissy when I stop for a while to shoot. I also feel bad that he has nothing to do...and like I said, we were both exhausted by that time. :)

I heard that rumor too, but with the wedding, we are pretty strapped for $ right now. We just tied the knot in Vegas and we left a little more money out there than we had wanted. ;)

Congratulations on getting hitched! Was it a theme wedding? ;)
Nice photo of the clock tower, that's always a popular subject. Have you been out by the Charles River? You can usually get a good cityline shot from Memorial Drive.

No theme...I didn't want a cheesy Vegas Wedding. We had the ceremony at Valley of Fire State Park, NV. About 45 minutes out of the city.
I did not have the chance to cross the Charles, is that what you mean? I am not too familiar with Boston, having only been there 4 times. But I will keep that in mind for the next time!

Hi gang,
Making my 'guest appearance' every few weeks as usual ;) Seriously though, perhaps one of my New Year's resolutions will be to keep up on this thread/forum more often! (as well as update my signature/gear list, right Daman?) ;)
And speaking of NewYears, I'm definitely game for a shoot if I end up in town...might be visiting another city/friends, but we'll see. Otherwise, I'm definitely game for a winter shoot with snow as well...Never thought I'd actually *wish* for snow, but if it's for the sake of shooting sooner than later, I'll start wishing! ;)

I'll have to check my Covered Bridges of New Hampshire map, and the same for NH. But I'm thinking that the nearest conglomeration of bridges would be 2+ hours drive.
How about something like winter waterfalls? Diana's Baths in North Conway could easily be 2+ hours of shooting. Jackson Falls is not far from there. And there's a few covered bridges. A lot of driving, and to be honest I don't know how much power all these falls would have this time of year. We haven't gotten any snow yet....
I'm thinking that waiting for snow around Boston is a better idea. IMHO

LOL indeed! :D My knees are fine now, but it certainly made for a great story at work that following Monday!
580EX and 50 1.4 sound great, especially with Canon's double-rebate program going on right now! I'm tempted to pick up some gear myself with this latest rebate program...we'll see! I hope you get your toys! :D

I'm always up for shooting around Boston since I'm only a T-ride away! Now if we can just get Mother Nature to give us some snow! I guess we'll have to keep an eye on weather forecasts and be ready to execute quickly since I presume we'll want to shoot right after the snowfall before it has any potential of melting or blowing off tree branches and such, eh?
Scottes
11th of December 2006 (Mon), 21:02

These sound good to me: "...gigantic ice sculptures on Copley Square and the Boston Common, a glittering fireworks display, and a Mardi-Gras style Grand Procession that sweeps through the streets of Boston."
"First Church of Christ, Scientist
Visual Arts & Exhibitions
1:00:00 PM - 6:00:00 PM
First Church of Christ, Scientist
Enjoy free tours of the Mother Church. "
I wonder if they'll let us in with cameras & tripods?
There are a bunch of acrobats, stunt riders, trampoline acts... All Indoors at the Hynes, though. :-(
Grand Procession
5:30:00 PM - 7:00:00 PM
Grand Procession: Boylston Street from Hynes Convention Center to Boston Common
Boston 4 Celebrations
Finale
7:00:00 PM - 7:12:00 PM
Boston Common: Parade Ground
“Boston’s Family Fireworks Celebration” Presented by Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Boston 4 Celebrations. After the First Night Grand Procession, a very special Family Fireworks show will light up the Boston Common at approximately 7:00 pm...."
Fireworks are cool...
Do they still do the midnight fireworks??? If so, it can be tough to get a seat. Maybe we should park on the roof of the garage next to Fanueil Hall - where Brendan, Steve and I spent a few hours? Otherwise Long Wharf is packed. Either of the parks in East Boston would be perfect - but quite possibly very crowded.
OrigiNation, Inc. & O'Shea-Chaplin Academy of Irish Dance
7:30:00 PM - 8:00:00 PM, and 8:30 to 9:00
John Hancock Hall
OrigiNation and O’Shea Chaplin Dance Academy of Irish Dance “Blast Off” This hip hop, step, jazz dance company gets together with a traditional Irish step dancing troupe. Watch these two companies dance together for this exciting First Night collaboration and cross-cultural dance pollination. You won’t want to miss this!
Indoors again.....
I guess we have to see this....
Camera Obscura / Cloud Place cloudfoundation.org
10:00:00 PM - 12:00:00 AM
Copley Square
The camera obscura (latin for dark room) was an optical device used in drawing and led to the discovery of photography. A camera obscura is a room size "pin hole" camera that projects an image from the outside onto a wall. Come and experience the camera obscura created by the artists and children of Cloud Place.

I'm partial to the ice sculptures. I'm not sure about a procession. I'm also thinking if we go along with the procession that we may be blocked from getting good things before the crowds fill up the area. But i've never gone to this before despite living in Boston my whole life. So if anyone has been maybe they'd know more about it.... either way, let me know.
Scottes
19th of December 2006 (Tue), 15:47
The processions is just a parade I figure. Stuff to shoot, anyway.
If you want to shoot the ice sculptures then I'd wait until about 2:00 AM. Last year I popped in to shoot them working the sculptures and I couldn't get near them. But many years ago I used to do 1st Night every year, and if it's cold they usually have the sculptures done early. Last year was warm, so they waited until the last minute to start.
But other than the sculptures, fireworks, and procession... Everything seems to be indoors. Unless we want to do night Street shooting of the hoards of people...
I think....?
flyfisher
19th of December 2006 (Tue), 16:39
We also have to think of how we are going to get around as driving is probably out.
If they do the ice sculptures the would be great. would we benefit from getting first night buttons?
If all of the events are indoors should we pick one or two ?
Scottes
19th of December 2006 (Tue), 16:48
The T and busses are free all night. I'm thinking about parking on the roof of that garage near Fanueil Hall and then taking the T for the rest of the night. The T shuts down at 2:00, North Station 2:00, South Station 1:00.
We'll want buttons for indoor stuff. Not for outdoor stuff.
Fireworks over Boston Harbor at midnight - I'd think a drive to the piers in East Boston would be perfect for this.
symbolphoto
19th of December 2006 (Tue), 17:24
Hmmm interesting.
It'd be nice to have a balance, Ice Sculptures, indoor events topped off with fireworks over in east boston. I agree east boston is the best for this one, possibly charlestown, not exactly sure on the angle, i've never been to first night fireworks. But we could all park at my house and take a taxi in, that's an option. Once we are done, we can taxi back to my place, hop in the cars and hit E.Boston.
If someone else can think of something else, please bring it up. What do you guys think?

Oh, for the harbor fireworks I'd say Piers Park - that's the place in East Boston with the fancy pier. The fireworks go off at the end of the Long Wharf Marriot or a little North. Piers Park should provide a good angle with the city behind.
Alas, it will probably be crazy crowded. Parking will be a serious pain unless we get there around 10:30 or 11:00, which makes for a long cold wait. I'm guessing though - we may get very lucky and have most people stay in Boston proper. But I was once there a few hours before some fireworks went off, and I talked to the MDC cops and got the impression that the pier would get quite crowded. Let's hope we have some luck since this will be MUCH later and MUCH colder.
Other than that I'm up for anything, too. I'll be grabbing a button some time - $15 won't kill me if it doesn't get used, but it might be nice to head indoors to get warm and shoot something.

Pier 4 - the next pier down from the Constitution, the long pier, for a long shot. Paul Revere Park - on the Charlestown side, right next to the bridge. You can walk across the tops of the locks to the Charles and shoot the whole bridge from (almost) underneath. And there's the top level of the Dock Square Parking garage, the garage that's between Rt 93 and Fanueil Hall.

Hi gang!
I'm in! So is the final plan 4pm at Mumbles home (if driving) and 5pm at Copley if meeting in the city? If I do end up driving in, what is your address Mumbles? Can you PM it to me?
If meeting at Copley, where shall we meet exactly? Perhaps somewhere warm to wait for everyone? ;) Like maybe inside the Copley mall doors on that one corner of the square? I think there is an escalator with waterfalls on both sides of that entrance...
Here is my number: 857-891-4744

Phooey. Too busy. The book project is killing me.
Not that it's really killing me, but the fact that I have to sort through thousands of bird pics and pick JUST TWO just about killed me. Man, that wasn't easy! It literally took me 4 nights before I picked two and was satisfied with the post-processing.
Have you guys submitted anything yet? There are certainly a ton of great shots in this thread... And I'm sure you've all got some more up your sleeve...

Woohooo! Some interest starting.
I'd love to meet up, I've never been. I've got a few things up in the air but nothing set in stone, although one thing could prevent me from showing up but it's a stretch.
One regret though, I wish I had thought about that weekend earlier, all the DKM tickets are sold out for the three shows at Avalon. :(
