Anyone want to go chase some Auroras/Northern Lights tonight? Strongest solar storm since 2003..supposed to be at their peak around midnight...

I didn't think we'd get much out of it because of excess lights even in rural areas but I'm gonna have to try to stay up to see if we catch anything.

Yeah well I was thinking of driving up north a bit...good friend of mine is an astronomer, he said around midnight will be best chance...

They said it would leak down into Maine, but i didn't see any mention of being able to see it here in Massachusetts. At least that's what the news said.

When i saw it in Iceland, it was very faint and not obvious at all. When i happened to capture a glimpse i took a photo and the sensor picked it up much better than my eyes ever could. Just a heads up.

I was floored - I mean, my wife is great, don't get me wrong, but I was ready for bed, she was ready for bed, and 5 minutes later, I had my F2 and tripod and we were en route to see if we could catch a glimpse.

I didn't snap a single photo, and yet it was awesome.

Although, she did surprise me last week. I just got my new-to-me 1D3, and our son was sleeping out, so we got up and she said "Let's go out so you can take some pictures.". She knew I wanted to mess with it. That was pretty cool.

Yeah right. I was too new to photography and too nervous to set that up in any meaningful way. What I did end up with were some blurry shots of the cityscape that night.

On Monday night there was some heavy ground fog up here and I had a chance to get out and play around in it in a parking garage. This was the last shot of the night, the rest were just empty with the lights and the fog.

Hull wasn't that great of a choice in terms of light pollution but glad u had fun!

Yeah, that and low lying clouds made it pretty much a bust even if it was visible. If it's supposed to be more visible tonite though.. hm. I'd really prefer not to drive further north if I can avoid it, but the tricky part is finding places that aren't overly lit. I just had a thought that if they were actually visible to the north that I may have been able to get the northern lights over Boston. Tell me that wouldn't have been epic.

Wow that sounds awesome Don. I'd love to go up also, but i'll be heading to India around that time. :( I was thinking about Snowmobiling this weekend, but i may hold off for a few weeks due to time constraints.

Either 6 months or a year..depends. There are 3 of us there, and I'm really busy w/ my other photo work, so this is just sort of a side project type deal for me.

When:Saturday, February 4th @4pm.
Where: 415 Summer Street, Boston MA 02210 (Street parking in front of the convention center, also parking on the side of the Westin Hotel).
Who: Bernie, Harm, Scott, Brendan, Kpratte, JTrue, Prabhod, Nathan.
What's needed: Yourself, your camera gear and tripod. Tripod is a must! Dress warm, we will be outside sometimes for extended periods. Dress appropriately.
Food: Still Open.

Locations:
Prudential Skywalk
East Boston view of the city for the new guys, Bernie and Prabhod.(A must).
I've got a sweet spot on a bridge above Storrow drive i've been wanting to revisit.
Some architectural stuff in Cambridge/MIT.
North Station bridges/Zakim area
