are there any places in MA like the butterfly place but with birds?
don't do it man, don't become a zoo shooter :) the real pleasure is going out there and finding them and stalk them, that's the only way to get the true satisfaction.

OK, my butterflies....
First, a 100% crop, straight from the camera. The 100-400 @ 400mm + 20mm extension tube. This lens really does rock. Versatile? You betcha!

I'm not too happy with that long bright stem on the left... Sometimes I concentrate on the butterfly, and not the background. Every time I shoot BFs I always manage at least once great shot that is ruined by some bright spot in the background.

Nice job, Scott! That crop is amazing!
I'm starting to wonder if the butterfly in your last shot was related to the lizard. Three of us got an almost identical photo! :)

Thanks Becca and Scott, I was just lucky with the Blue, one of them finally decided to open it's wings and sit for more than 3 seconds.

Hey guys, I just posted here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=3171080) but thought some of you would be especially likely to have knowledge. I'm moving up to Cape Cod this week, and I'm going to be staying there for 8-months. Have any of you been to the area before, and could give some suggestions for good places to go shoot?

BOATS
OK, I've been doing some research on boats, and have some news.
Tall Ships in Newport
First, for the Tall Ships in Newport, it looks like my co-worker's boat is a go.
The bad news... He discussed it with his brother and they're not sure that more than 6 people would be right. If at anchor things are fine, but when under sail more than 6 might be troublesome.
Flyfisher & Jackie, CDS, Mumbles and I appear to be in. That leaves 1 spot, unless I can convince him otherwise. (If someone else chimed in, and I missed you, let me know!)
So, if you want to go, let me know! Be prepared that you will need to be in Newport by 8:00 AM at the latest. That probably means leaving home at 6:00 AM to get there at 7:30 and being *prepared* to get on a launch and out to the sailboat.
You also must be prepared for the harbor and ocean, and 40-degree angles when under sail. Dress appropriately, and be prepared for hot sun and cool air, and lots of waves. Also bring food and drink - it looks like it will go from 8:00 until 4:00.
I will also have to require payment of $100 a person in advance. This is a STEAL, and I don't want to stick my co-worker so anyone missing that morning is $100 out of my pocket.
Boston Harbor Boat Cruise
I talked to one company. For a motorboat big enough for 12 people - a 40-footer - they wanted $365 AN HOUR. For 6 hours, what I would consider a minimum to make the day and payment worthwhile, that is $180 per person. I do not consider this worthwhile - it's definitely too expensive.
So I called another company, and they have a new yacht, a 63-foot boat that can accommodate 49 people.
http://www.bostonyachtcharters.com/Integrity2.jpg
Yowza! If a 40-footer was $365 then this boat must be outrageous. I mentioned that we were looking at something around $250 an hour (12 people at $125 each) for 6 hours. Minimum 6 hours, and maximum $125 a head.
Well get this. They were all over the idea of photographers. The yacht is new, and they want some cool pictures, inside and out and against the skyline. They said they could do that pricing no problem, if we could get them some shots soon, before the season really starts.
So I talked with Mumbles - first thought, since he's local. No offense to anyone here. Mumbles is willing to go in and spend a few hours getting some shots. I may help, and will loan Mumbles some gear if needs (flash and 100-400mm).
This is still in the works! No promises at this time, but Mumbles and I will be trying to make this a sure shot, since $125 a person for that boat would be very nice. And we could even do more than 12 people, thus dropping the price. I would have to get 50% in advance, non-refundable because anything short would be out of my pocket.
Ideas For A Boston Harbor Cruise
I am thinking that we are flexible at this time, a Sat or Sun between mid-July through end of August. Scheduling in advance and a wide range of options gives us some strong leeway. I'm thinking a 1:00 PM to 7:00 trip would be best, if we have that option.
My thoughts for the itinerary... If you have any ideas let me know!
Map of the harbor islands, and lotsa info on them.
http://www.bostonharborislands.com/isle_profiles.html
In a sense, I imagine leisurely hugging the Boston coast out to Little Brewster and/or World's End, scooting quickly to Deer Island, scooting to George's Island, and then leisurely past the airport and east Boston side, towards the Zakim, up the Charles, and back to base.
My thoughts/point to hit:
Zakim Bridge
North End
Boston skyline, various angles
Up close to Moakley Courthouse
Can we get down to the International Hotel? I think not.
Hug that "coast" down to the shipping terminal
Close to Fort Point
Around Fort Independent
Hang at the end of a runway for a bit. Plane shots?
Deer Island - that treatment station could be interesting
Little Brewster island & lighthouse
George's Island and Fort Warren (We could get off here for a bit)
Thompson Island (There's some old buildings there, right?)
Bumpkin island has "a stone farmhouse and the remains of children's hospital" - but do we want to get off?
Squantum Marina may have some sailboats under way, slightly different view of the city.
Charles River, head up and turn around, plenty to see.
If you have any ideas....
Are You Interested?
If you are interested in this Boston Harbor cruise let me know here.
If you have any weekends that you CAN NOT make it, mention that.
More info to come, but I'd like to get an idea of who is interested so we can plan and budget accordingly.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
a tale of a fateful trip.
That started from this tropic port,
aboard this tiny ship.
Don't get me going. I know the whole song by heart - it was the theme song of a long, alcohol-induced 3-day weekend of depravity, debauchery and hooliganism. In my younger days, of course - I can no longer debauch for 3 days straight.

The Tall ships sound great, I'll see if I can borrow a company boat and sail/motor up there.
If anybody wants to go out and get some shots of the boston harbor this summer, I am a sailing instructor at Courageous sailing, (peir 4 in the navy yard, inbetween the Tavern on the water and old Ironsides.). I can take you out after work, either in a 19 ft day sailor, or probly a larger 30ft sailor/crusier with more advance notice.
Does anybody know about using a gimbal'ed tripod on a boat for long exposures?

BOAT TRIP!
Being an islander, I grew up around and on the water so I miss being out in a boat. Count me in if the cruise idea is still feasible.

For the Boston Cruise, looks like we have 9 so far, plus 3 possible:
Steve, Jackie, Brendan, Becca, DJS, Khokar, Patrick, BBrat, and me - confirmed.
Hornyturbo, Snir, Arthur - possible.
(Assuming dates are acceptable to all.)
Confirming the dates, it looks like we have July 15, Aug 11, or Aug 12 as possibilities that fit everyone's schedule.
August 11 or 12 are looking far more likely than July 15.
8 people makes for a short (4 hour) and *possibly* expensive trip.
11 people means a short inexpensive trip, or a longer (6 hours) more expensive trip.

The low road: NYC, Capitol, Richmond, Knoxville, Mammoth Caves, Memphis, Little Rock, Dallas, Amarillo, Flagstaff, Vegas, Yosemite, Grand Sequoias, Frisco.
Then the high road back: Reno, Salt Lake City, Yellowstone, Rapid City, Dubuque, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Syracuse, and Boston.
It's an ambitious trip but since we're headed home for Singapore at the end of Aug, chances are I won't be on this side of the planet for quite some time. Brian, yes, this is for Boston. So far the plan is to get the very big boat, I think it's 63 feet. Whatever we get, if this happens we will be sure to get a boat with enough room for people to be able to easily get shots. I don't want to have everyone squashed when trying to get pics.

It all depends on the boat.
If Mumbles can work a deal with El Capitan then it will be a big boat and a decent price. Room for all.
If that deal falls through then space will be very tight as a 12-person boat is probably the most reasonable, and we are already close to 12, and we will want to have room for people to take photos.
Regardless of what happens, the cost will be somewhere between $100 and $150 a person. My goal is $125 for a 6 hour tour for everyone. (Less money would be better, but 4 hours is my absolute minimum to be worthwhile IMHO.)
Stay tuned...

First instinct, from Salem, is to scoot into Beverly, bear right away from 1A, and take Rt 127. Just stay on 127 until it hits Rt 128. It will take you a day.
Let's see here... Manchester Harbor, Gloucester Harbor, Eastern Point Lighthouse,Stage Fort Park, Singing Beach, Good Harbour Beach, Rockport harbor, pigeon cove, Rocky Neck, Hammond Castle, Magnolia, Machester mansions, Dog Bar breakwater, Bearskin Neck, Halibut statepark, annisquam harbor, Annisquam lighthouse....
That's my old haunt, and I used to take that route ALL the time. You will literally spend a day on this trip, and you will fill all your CF cards.
Do you happen to have Microsoft Streets & Trips? I actually have a route mapped with stopping points & descriptions. I made it up for a few friends who wanted to do a summer ocean drive. I have to say that this map of mine is worth paying $50 for MS Streets & Trips. $50 for an excellent photo day is cheap, in my book. :-)
Actually, I downloaded a free PDF creator and made it into a PDF:
http://www.itsanadventure.com/postimages/Rt_127_Cape_Ann_Trip.pdf
If you have - or get - MS Streets & Trips, here's the file:
http://www.itsanadventure.com/postimages/Rt_127_Cape_Ann_Trip.est
This map actually starts off Rt 128, bypassing much of the not-so-photographic stuff in Beverly and starts you right in Manchester Harbor. If you wish to spend a half-day on this trip, simply end it at Good Harbor Beach and head back to Rt 128 at this point. Though you'll miss Rockport Harbor and the famous Motif #1. But the stuff after Good Harbor Beach takes half the day and will account for 1/10 the photos.
If this doesn't suit you, again: What do you like to shoot?

Bostonians:
If any of you remember, we sort of discussed the above trip. I think some of you actually made it. (I wish that I had thought of printing a PDF of it back then.)
But this is another possibility for a day trip. And it's practically free! A couple/few carloads of people doing this trip would be a heck of a lot of fun.
Just something to think about.

Scottes,
What do you like to shoot?
I like shooting landscapes, but got a little taste of city life/people while on cruises.
Thanks for the map! I have printed it out and added it to the schedule!

I would call almost all of these spots landscapes, with a few cityscapes. Barely cityscapes, though, since town-scapes might be more accurate.
Take a look at numbers 3, 4, 5 and 6 to get a taste of what you'll see. (This is from an old web site I started, and abandoned due to lack of time.)
For proper cityscapes, browse through this thread looking for pictures. We did a LOT of shooting right inside Boston proper, and people have posted tons of shots. If curious about the location of a shot, just ask and someone will let you know exactly where it is.

Ok i briefly spoke with Ann, the organizer of the charter, and she is totally psyched about it as is her husband... the owner. Her husband was a big photographer back in the day and is totally enthusiastic about getting us on-board. So basically i have to give them a call back on thursday when they are both available and work out the details. I explained that we'd be interested in a weekend day in july and that we'd need a few weeks notice. Weather permitting, so they are totally cool with that and expect an update by friday afternoon.
This is going to be awesome... this vessel is pretty large and we'll have it to ourselves!

Psyche! Thanks Brendan!
I explained that we'd be interested in a weekend day in july and that we'd need a few weeks notice.
If possible:
Confirming the dates, it looks like we have July 15, Aug 11, or Aug 12 as possibilities that fit everyone's schedule.
July 15th is THE only day in July that fits everyone. If at all possible please ask for that day. We're almost 2 months in advance, so we should be able to get that particular day.
Other days in July are tough for various people. Granted, if we can't do anything about the date then a couple people miss out. :-( Or can hopefully change their schedule. :-)
But if at all possible, please try for July 15th.

Yeah i saw the dates, i told them we'd need a certain timeframe... if we want to isolate it to July 15th specifically that may be a bit more difficult on their end, but I will run it by them come thursday.

Summer weekends mean that I am at camp, in Connecticut, unless it's raining. The only thing close to me is Allen's Pond in Westport - a favorite of mine and CDS. Allen's Pond can be *very* worthwhile though. Especially in you wish to walk a mile out to the protected breeding areas for piping plovers and least terns.

Yo B, thanks for hitting me off about this. I would love to go. My bro and I have been talking about setting up a foot patrol type shoot at some point. He works in Cambridge in Kendal Sq. The plan was to park in Kendal Sq at his work, walk to the charles, hit up the sky line, walk the bridge for some more sky line, water, T shots. Nail charles street, beacon hill, the statehouse, common, public garden, then make our way to copley sq. I have someone lined up to buy prints already so I need to get this done sooner rather than later. What's the drop dead date you need a yes or no?

ANYONE ELSE for the Boston boat cruise? CDS? Yoyoboy? Kpiela? Hiro? Anyone I forgot?
I think I can make July 15th..

BOATS
Tall Ships in Newport
First, for the Tall Ships in Newport, it looks like my co-worker's boat is a go.
The bad news... He discussed it with his brother and they're not sure that more than 6 people would be right. If at anchor things are fine, but when under sail more than 6 might be troublesome.
Flyfisher & Jackie, CDS, Mumbles and I appear to be in.
If this is July 1 still, yes I'm totally still in! :)

Snir, a.k.a 'little bitch' is in. Hornyturbo is in unless we have the distinct possibility of getting stuck like Gilligans Island. (In which case i'll be killing off people at random intervals anyway, so no worries there). And arthur came back in and said he's in, unless i misread.
So i think we are good.

There is still time to join in, i'd say up until the date itself. If you are on the fence with this, i think you'd pretty much just need to ask yourself when is the next time you'd get a chance to be on a private yacht touring the harbor and neighboring islands for $125. for an entire day... i lived in Boston my whole life and have never had this opportunity presented to me. (Maybe i need richer friends) :) Anyhow it's capacity is 49, we have what looks like 16. So umm yeah, plenty of room to have your significant other onboard and have some space.
This is a go ladies and gentlemen. I'm really looking forward to this. More detailed itenerary to follow.

Roll Call For Boston Harbor Cruise
Okay, we need to start confirming people for the Boston Harbor Cruise.
Sunday, July 15
Noon to 6:00 PM
63-foot yacht Integrity
http://www.bostonyachtcharters.com/motorvessels.html
This boat is certified for 49 people, so there will be plenty of room to take pictures.
Cost will be $135 per person. This includes $10 a person to get Mumbles on for free, since he's doing the extra work to go out and shoot pictures, post-process, provide prints, etc.
I will need $75 in advance, payable to me. No refunds on deposit unless enough people add on to cover any losses I might incur. Anything extra will go towards a tip for the captain, or soda and munchies, or refunded. I am not at all interested in making a profit from this, I just want to go and not have it cost me $500 to do so. I do not need money yet. Let's call it June 15th due date for that.
What I do need is a list of people who will certainly make it, who will probably make it, and who will probably not make it. Please let me know how you land within those 3 specifications, and if you'll bring anyone else.

Either way, we might want to add it to a gathering. And how much is it? I seem to remember the Hancock observation deck being somewhat expensive for what would be a quick visit. Yeah, the Pru Skywalk is $11.... Not that I mind paying $10 for a good photo op.

Sure enough, a one second spotting on the train yesterday morning..
Cisne Blanco, a Brazilian navy vessel. I tried every which way but loose (Actually i tried loose too), and couldn't get a good angle on it. Daytime you can get it well, but at night other boats are docked around it. If you've ever tried to take a photo of any vessel in the water at night, you know it's next to impossible to get it in focus. This was the best i could do.

Oh, gawd, I was swaying all night... Too funny!
Definitely an excellent trip. I hope to get some photos up in a bit - I just got in and I'm copying them now.
Many thanks for dinner Don! But you *have* to post a shot to officially be a member of the club! :-)
Vin, that second shot with the bridge is awesome!
Brendan - nice job on #4 - love the 3/4 view. And great shot of the singing sailors on the next-to-last! (And yes, I must hit that balloon thing after the boat trip on the 15th.)
Thanks all. I posted a few to my Flickr account. I have to re read the procedure for posting here. The last time I posted, the pic was the size of a postage stamp!
Sure wish I had not lefy my polarizer behind! The singing sailors shot on the rigging must have been a "place feet here" shot because it is a clone of Brendan's.
Cannot wait for Boston!

Glad we were not out this morning! It was really cool when I went out early to water the garden and fill the bird feeders!

I think we missed a number of ships somehow, judging from the listing.

Did anybody happen to get a decent shot of the Cisne Branco (the Brazilian ship) with sails up? I know that Jamie and Josh wanted to send a pic to their father. All the ones I have of her are quite mediocre - but then again she didn't put much sail up that I ever saw, even on the way back.

Very nicely framed stuff scott.
I think your second would have benefitted from being a bit darker.
The clouds on the bridge shots are amazing!!
#6 and #9 are my favorites..

Thanks guys.
Brendan, I'll try that one a bit darker. And I loved those clouds all day! I hate plain blue sky for backgrounds.
Don, they list all the ships here: http://www.tallshipsrhodeisland.org/ships.html. The flags helped, as did other shots of the same ship at slightly different angles.
Vin, I took about 40 shots of the bridge as we passed under it. This was at 10mm, so you probably never saw a view like that since the eyes view much narrower.
