Yeah, I lost $20 because it turns out he's not a vampire. :-(

Did anybody happen to get a decent shot of the Cisne Branco (the Brazilian ship) with sails up? I know that Jamie and Josh wanted to send a pic to their father. All the ones I have of her are quite mediocre - but then again she didn't put much sail up that I ever saw, even on the way back.

I have an image of the Cisne Branco that is not framed badly but I cannot do anything with the color (Bland). In addition I imported it into lightroom and it added sharpening which looks OK in Lightroom, but when I look at it in CS3 it looks like it was sharpened with a razor blade,

I can email it to you, and you can see if you want it, if not deep six it. PM me your email if you want to look at it.

I just talked to Jamie and showed him all the pics. He is definitely appreciating all the great shots, and the offers of shots of the Brazilian ship.

They had a great time, too, and have already been thinking about things to do to get us out there again. The air show is a definite - if anyone hears about another air show in RI make sure you let everyone know! They also discussed a "tour" of Narraganset Bay, the Providence skyline, a Newport Mansions tour from the sea, drop-off on Prudence Island for some birding.... If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

I have been out many times in Narraganset Bay. But something focussed (no pun intended) could be interesting. An island visit to an place with a lot of wildlife would be tempting.

As long as I can bring my black velvet cape to hide from the light! LOL

Ask them if they can get us landed on Gould Island where the Ibis rookery is ;)
( I think we will need a permit though )

My latest idea is: Mount Washington by SnowCat, in November.

OK, another possible idea: Rent a 15-person van and drive the Kancamagus Highway making all the stops. Probably best in October for foliage, but then there's a bunch of tourists around...

Heck, how about "easy waterfalls of New Hampshire" - again with a 15-person van, we could probably hit 6 or 8 waterfalls that are all within 5 or 10 minutes of the road. And there'd be other stuff to see, too. It would be a long day - the first waterfall is probably 2.5 hours north of Boston....

There's the "Cape Ann" tour around Manchester, Gloucester, and Rockport. I posted a map of it a while back in this thread.... Lotsa cool places to stop.

I'm running out of ideas....

Hmmmm... Up 95 to 4 to 16, stop at Mt Chocoro then into North Conway & Echo Lake. Over to Diana's Baths and then Jackson Falls. Up to the Glen Ellis falls and view of Mt Washington. Back down 16 to 302 with plenty of stops in the Crawford Notch including 1 or 2 waterfalls and a few other worthwhile stops. Back down 302 to 112 (Kancamagus Trail) stopping at the rapids, the next falls up(small one) then Sabbaday Falls. Then to the end of 112 to 93 and home.

I think we could manage at least 6, if not 8 waterfalls, and at least 4-10 scenic stops. I'll have to check my mapping software at home - I've got plenty of spots mapped out in the White Mountains.

Long day though.

How bout just a walking tour of Boston ? or a walking ""Parking Garage Tour""

We can hit all of the Major Raised Parking Garages in the city for the best arial views of the City as we can get ?

OR do the Freedom trail in the Fall ? or has this been done before. If it has been done my bad . . .

Just throwing out some ideas.

Last idea. A Night time Shoot in either South Boston @ the Children's Museum Perhaps then walk to the Moakley Courthouse then end up near Gillette ? or do the other side.
The BU Bridge / Mass Ave Bridge. or the third option East Boston.

Again Just spitting out ideas.
Thanks again for organizing the BHC ! so much fun and still sorting through my 700+ Shots... UGH ! ha ha ha

Those are SO "been there, done that."
:-)

Just teasing. I'm always up for a Boston Shoot, but I don't think that I ever want to do a walking tour again. That was painful. We've already hit - we think - every possible garage with a view. And I could do it again, for sure.

For now though, day shoots are tough for me - too hot (which means hazy and we now know what that's like) and I usually go to my "summer house" on nice weekends. And too many tourists! Unless you wanted to do a Sunday at dawn - that will give you 3-4 hours before the city gets too crowded.

I'd rather wait until October or November for Boston, personally. Cooler, clearer, less crowded. Granted, you miss things like the Public Gardens in full bloom.

Yes, one could spend several hours at Diana's! The difficult thing for a group would be staying out of others' shots!

I went a couple years ago:

It's hard to believe that all these differing falls exist within a 200x100-foot area.

By the way, the most memorable part of the trip in Boston Harbor was as we approached Boston Light. I made a few with my 70-200 @ the long end and then figuring "This is the High Point" because, I had never been near Boston Light gefore. I grabbed my 5d WITH my only CPOL filter and framed some nice shots and fired away.

As we motored away, I looked down to see how many shots I had taken and note NO count!!! Opened my card door. EMPTY!!! How frikkin dumb is that, DUH? Somehow that useless CFn for "Shoot W/O card" got turned on! What a useless option!

What a useless brain I have. My eyes are going, my reflexes are going and now my brain is gone! However, I am up for the next one.

And *boring* for almost all of it. 90 minutes each way, with perhaps 20 minutes within the islands, straight shot through the harbor and basically as far away from everything as possible.

If you want something "similar" to our trip then check out the Sunset Cruise at http://www.bostonharborcruises.com/h_sunset_main.html
This is probably the most scenic of the Boston Harbor cruises. Bring a decently long lens though, as they don't intend to get close to much. I highly doubt you'll t see the lighthouse or cruise ship or Zakim or Tobin... But it is a nice trip.

If anyone in this area is interested in shooting some Sunflowers, there are a few fields in Griswold, CT. I made these this morning. The first image is of the much smaller field, but much more than you see here. The plants are also more mature and the plants are passing their peak.

The second field is also just at its peak and most plants are straight and prim! There are about 300,000 plants here and they are grown to attract people to come to the Farm Ice Cream Stand and buy a tee Shirt or a Bouquet to Support the "Make a Wish" Foundation.

See them between today and next weekend (July 21 to 28, 2007) or you will have to wait another year. Anyone wants company, I will be glad to go again!

I am going to run to store so cell above is best way to reach me! Should not be more that 30 minutes!

I think mid-day will be crowded, By doing what we did yesterday, in essence getting there before it "opened" so no one was there to restrict our movements. We walked up a road in the smaller field that had a sign "do not enter, tractor road". I think they run hayrides and may restrict people mid day from ths area.

But there are many spots ourund the periphery from which to shoot!

All, I know is that it was f8 &1/500. The rest of the exif data is not there. It is a crop. I was in a hurry when I did this one and omitted the Shadow/Highlight check. I think it could use about 10-15 on the shadows because the bee is not very visible!

Hello New Englanders! I ran across a possible opportunity for someone if you are interested. I met a nice young man (at Staples of all places!) who is a member of a band that is in the process of finishing up their first album and are looking for a photographer to do some promotional photos and a possible cover. I told him that I am not much of a "people" photographer but that I would pass on his information to others in the area. He did say that they didn't have a lot of money, so I wouldn't expect a huge paycheck out of it, but it might be worth it for the experience.

So... if you might be interested, send me a PM and I'll send you his email address. (I'd rather not post it in the open forum.)

Re: Buttonwood Sunflowers:

I brought 2 of my Great Grandchildren this week for another look! Even on weekdays the crowds are there.

The close field is drying out and the large field with the wagon still looks peak. The kids were not interested in the flowers all that much, but the ice cream was a hit!

Have not reviewed the images as yet because I am working on another project. I will post anything, that is not a clone of the earlier images.

Ok now that we got Steve back online and we've picked up a few new folks... who'd be interested in a Boston night shoot again? Surely a lot of us have new gear... and wouldn't mind trying out some new things, so let's hear it!

I am in!

flyfisher
30th of July 2007 (Mon), 19:12
well if it is during the week I am deff in but unfortunatly I cannot join up until sometime after nine o'clock as I work second shift. 1P - 9P
but if you guys are still out I would be more than happy to come join you.

Usually the nights shoots are barely getting started at nine

I have my 24 year old Granddaughter, Melisssa, arriving from Utah for a week or 10 days, but she is here to see New England, So if she is ok and it doesn't impact an already scheduled event.

I think Aug 10 we may be in Rockland/Rockport Maine for a show. thought this maybe a weekday thing, but if not, I cetainly understand. After 9PM on 11th might be OK!

Yeah it's definitely worthwhile. We always run into something, be it a huge 7 alarm fire in sommerville, or a security lockdown near a biological lab...

We can hit the usual spots for some of the newer folk, and we'll hit some new spots for some of the others...

We could either the 10th or the 11th but if its the 10th it would have to be a little later as I would have to go home from work the drive into the city we would probably be able to make 8:30 on the 10th

We’re off to Nova Scotia in the morning so will check back on Monday to see if anything is going to happen.

Ok gents, i'm going to go with the 11th. I think it's easier on everyone. Especially those that work all day on friday. Also, parking will be a bit easier on the weekend, at night at least down that way.

So let's say meet at the;

Boston Convention & Exhibition Center
415 Summer Street
Boston, Massachusetts 02210

Around 8:30pm. Sound ok?

You can use this for street parking again... NOTE: We aren't meeting at the star point!

Hey guys,
Assume nothing comes up, I'd love to come, if this event is open to new comers such as myself!

Looking at some of your guys work it will be pretty far out of my league, but I'm sure I could learn a lot, if people don't mind.

No sorry, we only allow expert level people.

hehe, Absolutely, in fact, we encourage everyone to come along. We are all at different levels and even if you were a veteran, there is always something to learn from someone... So i most certainly hope you come out. The other good benefit is that we usually let each other try each others gear, so if you were thinking about buying something, but weren't quite sure about it, but now you have the chance to try it out real quick, that's another great reason to come out.

Third is, Boston @ Night, you may find some new spots to bring your significant other. hehe...

So yeah, plenty of reasons for all levels to come along!

Definately go if you can. Its a great group of people, my first was the boat trip of the harbour and i was hooked. not to mention the wife is happy 1.) get out of the house 2.) make new friends that share the same hobby 3.) i use my gear even more 4.) she encourages me in buying new stuff??? (this one smells fishy..she is up to something...)

I'll have a definate answer by Wednesday or Thursday the latest Brendan. I hope i can make it.

bottom line GO! you wont regret it.

We are going to be in Maine and returning Saturday Evening so the and ability to get a room under the price of a 50mm f1.2 will be a factor.

I am sure Pauline will want to rest. I am hoping my 24 year old Grandaughter Melissa from Utah will join us. She can have my 20D or whatever. I think seeing some of Boston this way will be great for her!

Well turns out my cousin needed his camera back so I am out.
Plus like I said I was kinda hoping for the 10th as I am in Boston daily and just can't justify spending the cash on gas to drive in on a day I am not here.
Hope to maybe get in on another night shoot in the Fall perhaps when I get a new camera.
So for the moment I am cameraless. I might have a chance to get a hand me down point and shoot from my future brother in law. Just gotta talk to him about it.
Also gonna check out Ebay see what they have to offer.
Although I was pretty happy with the Canon Powershot G2. Had a lot more options than my Olympus could ever offer. I will never buy an Olympus or Fuji again.
Live and learn as they say.
Anyone have a spare Canon they want to part with ?

Well we have a decent group so far...

Ken, yeah we typically take off from the meeting spot. Find 2 suitable cars (Mine will probably be one), and drive around different parts of the city. I have a few spots i'd love to hit again like a certain parking garage roof near fanueil hall, and some near the wharfs, 1 or 2 spots near copley etc..

We make occasional trips back to the meeting point in case people want to leave or get too tired... a few of us have stayed out until 4-5am in the past. Yes, 4-5 am. :) But most do drop off about 12-1am.

I'm doubting that I'll make it...

The Fanueil Hall garage was one of the best. The Charles locks, under the Zakim, might also be cool late at night.

But where any spots near Copley worthwhile? The Mother Church is good, as always. Don't forget the garage overlooking Mass Ave? where you & I were on the outside staircase. Great spot.

That garage, and the one in Copley, and the one by South Station would all be cool if you had a stepladder. Or a truck that you could get on the roof.

4-5AM? ? ? Why, who would be crazy enough to do that? ?

For someone who had never seen a skunk before, it was a big deal :D
