Has anyone been to Salmon Creek Falls. From what I read, the trail head is about 9 miles north of Cambria. Not sure how much of a hike it is to the falls, but the photos I saw of the falls looked very nice.
wow...i have lived here my whole life, and have never even heard of salmon falls, ill have to check it out!

ok...gorda is no 9 miles above cambria!

*edit* ok i did some research, and the trail head is about 35 miles north of cambria, and its a windy narrow road, so it will take probably half an hour- fourty five minutes to get there

I was just up that way last weekend and it is about 35 miles up from Cambria. But if that is a place of interest plan on a minimum one hour drive up Highway one. And that's providing Caltrans is not working on the road. Your right about the road it's a toughie.

Have you done anything about dinner at the Outrigger? If not call me on my cell asap and I will take care of it. Number is eight-zero-five-two-three-four-three-nine-six-four.

The main trail head is 35 miles away. But according to the web site I found (http://www.waterfallswest.com/ca_salmon.html) the falls are only 0.5 miles from the Salmon Creek Ranger Station which is 3 miles north of Cambria. This may not be group activity, but if I have time while we are there, I will probably go check it out. Here is a topo from the website showing the location:

Dwight my wife and I are looking forward to the drive down the coast and meeting all of the folks! I have been in the post holidays lull-but a new Burelsque show is tonight so hang on to your seats! Also, two new cameras and lenses since the last gig. Then the Pebble Beach AT&T tournament. Got an 8 GB micordirve for the Mark IIn so with an SD to serve as JPEG backup, I ought to be able capture every sip of coffee on the 18th and put together an animated flip book!

i just spoke with my manager who went to SLO a few years back. She definately reccomends montana de oro. She mentioned that going to Shell Beach would be a great place. you walk down a cliff to a small beach area with caves and what not, should be a nice place to take photographs as well.

while we're talking about hiking, she mentioned that Madonna Mountain is nice as well for a hike.

in terms of nightlife for those who are intersted she said anything on higuera street should be good to go.

Mike, that AT&T thing field hockey or lawn bowling? I know that they sit and drink coffee or tea a lot in lawn bowling. Oh, and it it's cricket, Gavin made me learn about that! :-)

I can see I am now out-camera'd once again! :-)

Ok...i talked to my buddy at the outrigger in morro bay...about the 18th. He is going to accommodate us, but we could not have reservations for 7:00, so he set us up for 6:00(i tried for 7:00, but he is booked) there is room for 40 at most in our section. I need to know, how many people for sure are going to be at the dinner though...so can we make a new list please?

Thanks

The sun sets at 5:48. That will make dinner at six a little tight. But, if we can only get reservations at 6, we can at least get some shots of the setting sun on the cliff face.

Since you mentioned Shell Beach, here's a quick set of shots (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wildabeast71/sets/72057594055043463/). Check out the tide first if you go down the steps to the beach area. When I was in Pismo at the beginning of the year, it was extremely high.

Depending what time you go, and you get hungry, might I suggest McClintock's just on the other side of 101 from there?

While i agree that there are a lot of cool places to see, I don't think we should get too carried away. My main purpose of this jaunt is to meet all of my fellow POTN members and to have a social event. Of course I plan on doing some picture taking too.
I think for the sake of sanity we should stick to a low key amount of travel and try to optimize the 2 or 3 places we have basically agreed on; Cambria during the day, Montana de Oro late afternoon and Morro Bay for dinner. There is always Sunday that people can branch out and go wherever but I'd like to have Saturday to spend with all of you.
Just my $0.02 worth.

I agree. We need to allow for a little spontaneity. I’m looking forward more to meeting as many of you as possible. Hiking is not one of my strong suits, so I’ll leave all that for the younger legs in the group.

Maureen I totally agree. There are lots of great places along the coast, that's why we all keep coming over. For me personally I to would like also to meet my fellow POTN members, socialize and take some pictures without traveling a bunch. Since the weather can change so quickly, sunsets or even just sunshine may only be a memory. To give us an option I will cal around this morning and see if one of the other restaurants on the Embarcadero can handle us at a later time. I will post an update as soon I know something. So that's my $0.02 worth.:) :) :)

Marvinspu36

I heartily agree too. The main reason for getting together is to meet each other and have fun. I am so excited that I will finally be able to put some faces and personalitites to the names I have seen in the forums. I think the suggestions of places to see are awesome though. It gives me ideas for future trips in the area!

It will make dinner a little tight...but a nice morro bay sunset behind the rock is always beautiful. And to frydryce's comment...i was talking about an actual list of people that are 90% they will be eating with us...not just coming here, that way i could give a head count to my friend, and he can utilize his space accordingly.

By the way, I agree with Maureen's sentiments. I saw this as more of a social event than a photo safari (wasn't it supposed to be a swap meet originally?). I don't plan on taking all that many pictures on this excursion.

I called Harbor Hut and they can accommodate us Saturday evening at 7:30 for dinner. I told him around 25-30 people, but it could be less. Sal said he would block off the back section of the main dinning area for the group and will setup either one long table or two tables what ever we prefer. He will also let us have and open menu. I have asked Sal to pencil us in until tomorrow afternoon(Sunday) in order that the rest of you can decide yea or nae. I only did this as some wanted more time for sunset opportunities.

Cybnew
28th of January 2006 (Sat), 14:18
so now its between 6:00 and 7:30? and two places? we need to decide fast, I can agree with the 7:30 time for the photo opprotunities, but i also see that people are going to be traveling with children, and i know when i was younger, i didn't like eating late (7:30 is a fairly late dinner in my opinion). So, i guess lets just take a group vote on where we want to eat. Also if we do decide to continue with our reserved spot at The Outrigger, we will have a whole section to ourselves aswell.

My vote goes to the 7:30, I plan on hitting sunset and a little after at Montana De Oro, and that just doesnt leave a lot of time.

I am really OK with it either way. In some ways, the 6pm dinner would be nicer because it would give us more time to visit over a nice meal. There are always lots of sunsets, but not as many chances to get together! So, I guess I am saying my vote is for the 6pm dinner. 7:30 is a little late if you have kids, and especially if anyone is driving home Saturday night.

It sure is interesting coordinating an event over a forum :) .

I would like to have a more social time with all of you. I don't really care where we eat, just make sure they have some wine and coffee and I'm good to go. :) BTW, Morro Bay is only a few minutes north of Montana de Oro.

6:00 dinner is just fine. I only wanted to offer an option as some POTN members were interested in the sunset. No harm no foul.

Marvin and Kevin: You guys can work out the dinner details via PM and when you agree what time and where, let the rest of us know. I'd like dinner to be around 6:30-7:00- ish.

DwightMcCann

Maureen, your two cents is worth at least a "buck two eighty nine" as my boss says ... I agree entirely, I am coming to meet my fellow POTNers, find out which ones I like :D , which ones I don't like  , put faces with avatars, make sure folks are who they purport themselves to be, make sure folks know that I am who I pretend to be here ... much more social than photographic. If I get a chance to get a few shots then that's a bonus, but it is generally much harder to get great pictures when having to accommodate many other photographers ... two or three together is very beneficial and then it drops off like a rock. It will be interesting to see what's in the area to come back to at another time. And I'll know if I really want to go shooting with Mike Goat or Johnny Thunder or Cybnew or whomever at a later date.

Cybnew

Marvinspu36

LOL. DwightMcCann, aptly put!

In regards to dinner arrangements. The main thing is to reserve wherever we are going soon so that we have a place to eat dinner as a group, and to make sure that we can have a leasurely dinner. I think dinner at 6:30 would be a good compromise. It would allow those who want to take sunset pictures and still make it to dinner. As long as we can have the restaurant space long enough to eat a leisurely dinner and socialize. These are just suggestions. I am OK with whatever arrangements are made.

Cybnew
29th of January 2006 (Sun), 23:45
my guess...if we keep our reservations at the outrigger for 6:00 and some people make it a little late...it will be more than fine

I haven't put my name down because I had something pop up at work, now I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to make it

I'll know this week, I didn't want to say I wasn't coming until I was sure.

I really hope you can work it out to come Sam!

OK, OK, OK, I know a lot of folks don't like the way they look or wish they were a few pounds lighter (50 in my case), but let's not get carried away with "warding off" behavior. We can all stand close together as a group, with hips, tummies, butts, et alia squished firmly together and the svelte people in the front row! I like the way I look and therefore all pictures of me are good ... and if you want to shoot something to embarrass me for saying that, well, I certainly understand and you should feel free. Personally, I have noticed that many of our very best photographer members are a bit on the chunky side [you know who you are, particularly the moderators] ... I think it aides image stabilization ... and people who can afford this expensive habit are, on average, going to be a bit older ... except for Cybnew, of course, who will be in the front row! So, let's all put our faith in our fellow members that they aren't really interested in our various and assorted feature failings and concentrate on the fun stuff ... like joking about Maureen!

i think you guys have it wrong with needing a wide angle lens. as you know anything below 50mm expands the perspective. what we really need is a 600mm lens to compress the image! hahaha j/k.

I wasn't allowed to respond to criticism of my images or my personal life. My responses would disappear and I would get a PM. So, anyway, I am a bit gunshy when folks start with, "Do these jeans make my bottom look big?"

yeah unfortunately there are groups out there with jerks for moderators. anyone who doesnt agree with them or their friends will get banned or warned. the reason we have these forums on the internet is to join as a community and express our opinions and ask questions. what's the point in censoring people who come here to speak their minds and obtain information?

anyhow, just speak the truth and remember, you're the one carrying the beater stick.. um i mean... monopod =) [seriously a 2lb stick with a 1lb ball head can do some damage!] haha

anyhow, i think this community is great where you can speak your mind and not be censored for it. remember opinions are just like a$$holes, everyone's got one :D

Interesting comments....it is funny to hear everyone worrying about how we'll look to each other. I have the same worry....my double chin appeared this last year courtesy of the Prednisone I have to take and I am a chunk-o as well. But I don't color my hair or wear much make-up and most people seem to like me anyways. Although some of you have a pre-conceived notion that I am a goody two shoes and motherly, I am quite a jokester and don't mind being picked on and teased at all. I don''t get mad very easily but when I do, I come out shooting with both barrels (and I am not referring to my thighs :) )

Dwight, you better not disappoint me... I expect to hear lot's of teasing from you (and Steve & Marv, too).

I don't care how big you are, if you have a crooked smile or long nose. I do think I am going to like all of you and look forward to a day and evening of fun.

If we're listing things we want others to dig out of their closets and bring to swap . . .

I want:
16-35f2.8L, 17-35-f2.8L or 17-40f4L (in that order of preference)
70-200f2.8L-IS
a good macro lens (65mm to 100mm)
a Cokin filter wallet (p-series)
Cokin p-series filters
a 420/430 flash to use as a slave to my 550

I have available to trade/sell:
a perfect condition 10D with battery grip. Includes all original box, packing, manuals and software, etc.
a 28-105f3.5-4.5 USM-II (perfect, with box, caps, filter, etc)
a 70-200f2.8L (non-IS) - will swap it plus cash for an IS version.
a couple of LaCie 250GB external firewire/USB2 hard drives

I don't plan to haul along anything unless someone contacts me and expresses interest in something I listed. I'll have the 70-200 with me, of course. I have lots of other stuff, will watch for postings of other's wish lists and check my stash.

I'm also not embarrased about my looks. I am what I am. I was just making fun of one of my features!

I would love to buy the 70-200 2.8, but I don't think I could convince my wife that I need it that badly, seeing as I bought all the gear you see listed in my signiture this last year. If you wouldn't mind bringing it, I'd love to check it out. Maybe she'll see the light (pun intended). I'd really love to compare it's focusing compared to my f4.

I have a few meager lenses but I am willing to share... my 16-35mm is great for scenery and group shots (wide angle for those of us who are worried about not fitting in to the picture). I'll bring my 580EX and 420EX so there should be plenty of light.

Steve, you are right.. I also think we are going to have a great get-together. If it rains, we'll find a place to hang out indoors and we won't let it stop us from having fun. Besides, it seldom rains all day...showers off & on are more the norm.

Good for you on the lens, Maureen, although I (and I think Mike Goat) also have this lens and I will loan mine! Remember, it AFs so slowly you can get coffee while waiting! :-)

My wife and four year old will be along and they are a lot of fun. Anna loves to model after she warms up and does a lot of girlie-girl poses (I have no clue where she got this talent!) So, I think there will be plenty of socializing ... before 9PM ... for everyone. My fourteen year old niece lives nearby, Cyb, and she is gorgeous (a professional model) and smart so if she isn't "involved" I'll see if she wants to come along. If anyone has a ST-E2 transmitter I would really like to try it out if you are willing. I want to see how well it will work for firing my flash on my Pro-T flash bracket. When I flip the flash into portrait mode, the focus assist beam no longer covers the focus sensor area. I'd like to use the ST-E2 for my focus assist and to fire the 580EX on the bracket.

I've got one of those little hummers and I'll have it with me. You're welcome to test away...

What will be fun to try--weather permitting--is a couple of shots where many of 580EX's are used. Might help me understand this ratio business...

5-580ex's, we could take a mean group portrait with that! haha

We could probably set up a good handful of cameras on tripods with the 580's and get a bunch of the same picture. :D

...may have been here but I remember seeing an internet post where someone had taken an outside photo using something like 9 - 580EX's It was an impressive shot as I recall.

I think we're pushing that number already

Another gee whiz thing we can do is take a count of all the cameras, lenses (by type), flashes, tripods, and other accessories and post it in a thread titled "Recommended Minimum requirements for a quality POTN Photo Expedition" :) :)

I'l be bringing me Off brand Flash, looks and works a lot like a 550, and I'll have a few M42 lenses with an Adaptor, which is Awesome with the Split Focus screen installed (I do love that screen!)

Hopefully I'll be able to trick the wife into letting me get a 28-135 IS. She needs to get into this hobby, so its easier to tempt her into buying lenses/bodies, currently the only thing she shoots is a dirty look at me for wanting more gear!

We should make it into Morro Bay at a decent time, 7-8pm or so, traffic depending, possibly earlier

If you go into downtown SLO, you might want to venture into Jim's Campus Camera (http://www.virtualslo.com/business/Business.php?id=161) to see what they have to offer.

considering we have about 15 photographers and each of us has a minimum of $2000 in equipment, the minimum requirement is going to be like $30,000 worth of equipment for a good expedition!! haha

I have really been anxious to see a Canon modified with the split screen focus. I have been thinking about getting that for my camera. It will be great to see a camera with one.

Are you implying that it might be rubbing it in to include a statement like, "...in addition to the minimum equipment requirements, the successful photo expedition should be held at a venue whose scenic beauty rivals that of the California coast" LOL

Fryd, Belmondo has over $30K by himself! And I'll bring another $10-15K myself. I think you're going to have to up the ante on the QUALITY expedition! I have a 580EX, too. I will also be bringing my "Full Wemberley on Gitzo Fiber Carbon Legs with leveling head" and a couple of extra lens clamps for anyone wanting to try it with their own big lens! Heck, I got goodies that I haven't even put batteries in yet, like an LC-5. :-) We could use it as the master trigger for that 20-580EX group portrait.

The IRS may be monitoring the site so I can't disclose the value of my photo stash, but I'm guessing the $30K is a lowball estimate :)

I'm not worthy.... I'm not worthy..... I'm not worthy.... bows down to the pros (or those with extremely understanding spouses) :D

God, i better not show this thread to my girlfriend. I got enough heat for buying my 70-200 Sigma. haha (I'm at about the $2500 mark and she's about had it... and i want more!)

I'm really looking forward to this weekend. Meeting you all and being able to see all the equipment is inspiring to say the least. I'm sure our meet will be a standard for all meets to come.

so it apears that a quality outing will not only require the sheer beauty of the California Coast, but about $150K worth of equipment as well.

I guess this also means we should refrain from uttering any sentence that begins with, "oh man, you GOT to get one of these...." :)

I'm sorry, but I ALWAYS recommend to spouses/sweeties that they forgo a major appliance or engagement ring in favor of camera equipment: either the photog gets the equipment or they get out of a bad relationship! I am fortunate that my equipment budget is entirely business related for a year now so this is not a problem for me. :-)

You know, I was thinking the same thing.
We've already owned up to carrying more weight than we should (ie can't run after theives)
We've said how stuff we have (ie. put your friendly fence on speed dial)
We've said where we're going to be (call in re-inforcements)

...thank Buddha your hubby is coming strapped.

:) :) We'll be fine. a 100-400mm can inflict a snootful of pain, let me tellya

Cal Poly is right up your alley, lots of cute girls your age there. For those who are staying Saturday night and want to go out, we should hit up the bars in the area to hang out.

any takers? I was told anything in higuera street would be good at night.
