To all of our cyber blind dates!! It was a genuine pleasure meeting all of the folks in cyberspace that Kevin chats with. Kevin and I had a great time with all of you. Even thought I didn't understand all of the language that you spoke.......I call it Canon language.....the 1050's, 203's, 705's.....:) it was great to see the passion behind all of your eyes over the hobby you enjoy so much. Please look us up the next time you come to town. There is a tremendous amount to photograph and see. We are still exploring!

I think it is so cool that you are getting into photography from the film end first. That is where I started my interest back in college. I cannot imagine understanding much about the craft if I hadn't learned something about exposure, development, burning, dodging and DUST from photographic wet work! Keep learning. We look forward to your photos!

Wow...we had such a great time! It is amazing how a common interest can draw people together. We really enjoyed meeting each one of you and spending time laughing, talking, and shooting. We were sorry to see the weekend draw to a close today. We pulled in to our house about midnight. I've downloaded the pictures, but am too tired to pick some to post. Will post a couple tomorrow, and put some of them up on my PBase account.
Love all your comments on the pictures that have been posted so far. Very funny! Glad everyone made it home safely.

WOW, just WOW! Can you imagine what we've probably started here ... life long (well, some of us don't have as much left as others, but ya' gotta' take what you can get) friendships, amazing trips (much better when one has a working camera), finding out how old everyone is (it was nice to be in a group where the focus of conversation wasn't illnesses and operations), and having contacts in so many interesting places. So, while we are a bit time constrained because I am working two jobs, I expect that we will work something out ... if nothing else, hosting some of you for a visit to Sideways Country.
Cybnew, I apologize for not bringing the film ... I got distracted because of my camera issues, sigh. But I have your cell number and whenever we come up that way again I'll give you a ring and bring it up. And now I can't remember if I mentioned that I talked to Taylor's Mom and she was already committed for the weekend.

Interesting story:
This is Alfonso Bedoya who played Gold Hat in the 1948 Classic, "Sierra Madre". Bedoya was my family name before my Great Grandfather Danforth Billings Bedoya decided to change it to Montoya.
In fact, in this photo taken from the film, Alfonso Bedoya bears a striking resemblance to my cousin Chewie from Fresno.

I wish my wife and I could have made this as it looks like it was a lot of fun.
We will try for next time.
It looks like a lot of friends were made. Just in the pictures I see a lot of toys I would have liked to learn more about. :)
The last time we were at Hearst Castle (many years ago) you could take pictures inside, but without flash. Same restrictions? I have rolls of grainy Fuji 1600 pics. I wonder what I could do with a dSLR and faster lens today? Just the shot of the outdoor pool brings back pleasant memories.

Seeing the elephant seals in their element was a fascinating experience. Amid the confrontations between the bulls, the barking cows, and the nursing pups the reality of what it takes to survive was also evident.
A docent explained that the pups that aren't able to keep up, are sick, get separated from their mothers or are otherwise unable to fend for themselves, simply die on the beach. Whatever the scavengers leave is inevitably reclaimed by the sea.

Silly as it sounds, that 15 degree correction you get with the leveling head is a huge timesaver! I often setup in the casino with one or two legs on a mat or rug or some other piece of equipment and after quick gross adjustment of the legs, the last little steps to horizontal is very quick and easy. I think it was about $165.

That is a 24-105, yes.
I'm actually developing great affection for that lens. I really never believed I'd find it a suitable replacement for the 24-70L, but I'm using it almost all the time. The IS makes up for the missing f-stop, and the extra reach comes in handy occasionally. The 24-70 pretty much stays in the bag these days.
DwightMcCann

DwightMcCann
20th of February 2006 (Mon), 21:14
Tom, I have that lens ... got it for use as a "walking around" lens on my 20D, but when you mention it as a replacement for the 24-70mm I realize that I might want to make that switch at boxing. How does it shoot wide open? I wouldn't use the IS but the extra reach would be nice. Also, there was a lot of concern about flare and boxing is a lot of shooting into the lights ... you have an opinion on that? Hmmm, maybe I should take this over to EOS lenses, eh?
Belmondo

I have one of the early units that apparently had a problem with flaring. I've noticed it, and plan to send it in for the free repair. Right now, I'd say it's unacceptable for the use you're considering, but maybe the upgrade will clear up the problem. It's high on my list of things to do when (or if) I get back home.

Well, now that I've seen Maureen and Matt's 300mm f/2.8 Elephant Seal images all the rest pale by comparison. I had that lens in my trunk and would have loaned but I guess I was really bummed about my camera and only thought of myself, sigh. I expect next year we will make a few trips up to see the seals again as they are only a couple of hours away as Anna loved them and I will then get a chance. Of course, there are the Monarch Butterflies, too, that are close by in Pismo. Ah, so much to do, so little time.

thanks guys!!! im scanning my negs right now...not liking how they are turning out in ps, they will be much better when i make the prints, so you will have to wait :) (i might be able to do a couple tonight, doubtful though, as we are having work done downstairs, and its brighter than a studio right outside my darkroom ( :) )
also, good news!!!! today, i officially started saving for a 20D. (after paying $100 to my car fund :( ) I am $150 closer to a new camera though, and will hopefully have it in not that long!!!!! (lenses are another story though :'( )

Well, after scanning my negs (this is only one roll mind you) I found about 7-8 that i may print. I have a pretty good one of ashley! (i felt real bad after stepping on her) And i was also impressed, with the way the ones i took with my flash came out, as it was the first time i had used it!

Don't beat yourself up over it. I step on her all the time at home. She always insists on following me everywhere and being as close as she can. I can't turn around without stepping on her or accidentally kicking her. She'll never learn. (And apparently, neither will I.) I saw her laying down behind you and thought about warning you. I knew from experience it would happen. I don't know why I didn't speak up... :)

I had a wonderful time meeting all the POTN friends. Every one of them was just outstanding as was their families.
On Sunday we took a tour of Belmondo's summer cottage. ;)
Here is a shot I took of his hilltop hut from the other side of Highway 1. I used my 70-300 DO + 1.4 TC.
P.S. This was hand held. Still lovin' that IS :-)

I got it from the manufacturer's own web site. Scottes was the one who gave me the address. Or was it IanD? Hmmm....
Ok, after about 15 or 20 minutes of trying to figure it out, I finally remembered I have a link to it buried on my own web site on the "My gear list" page down there in my signature.
It's from naturescapes.net, and this is the link that will take you straight to the Better Beamer page: http://www.naturescapes.net/store/home.php?cat=21

Come on, Dwight. Modesty does not become you.
I just came from the Performing Arts forum where I viewed the Juanes concert you mentioned to me. Now I have to put some antibacterial on my chin to treat the injury when my jaw dropped. AWESOME! :)
Still, it's too bad you didn't have your camera with you. I would have tagged along just get a handle on this lens-cap-removal technique you've perfected (just one more reference, OK?)

Steve, thank you. If you are into Latin music I would also suggest my Marco Antonio Solis event images. It is easiest to go to my website, www.DwightMcCann.com, click on the Chumash logo, click on 2005, scroll down and click on the image or text for the event you are after. There are usually more images available on my website than I post to POTN. Marco will be coming back to the casino in the Fall. Given your age bracket you may find some of the other events interesting, too.
I actually did have my 20D with me but I was so disrupted by the problems with the 1D Mark II that I couldn't bring myself to pull it out, sigh. In the future, with two Pro bodies I will hopefully not be in this bind again. I have been known to shoot a decent picture or two .... I'm surprised you have stumbled on me previously in Urban Living and now in Performing Arts ... I have B.B. King, Willie Nelson, James Brown and a couple of other interesting performers.
P.S. Why doesn't modesty become me? I thought everything became me 'cause I am so cute!

Maureen,
I love your shot of the dogs. I love the little one facing the same way as the driver, almost mirroring his posture. And the big one looking bored, like "why do I let them drag me into these drives?" Edit: I can almost envision a coffee cup in the dogs hand (paw) hiding behind the big dogs head.
