Nice work, Lonnie. I especially love the 'Awwwwwww' pictures of Ashley. I hesitate to call her a dog. She's that special.

WOW Lonnie, your shots are stunning. Who cares about your seal shots, the others are great especially the show on the pier and the one of Ashley is suitable for framing. Welcome home.

Beautiful shots Lonnie! Of course, we all went "awwwwwww" when we saw the one of Ashley in the snow. So cute. The landscape shot of Yosemite is great. This world has so much beauty to offer.

Wow, thanks everyone. We had a lot of fun on that trip, both with the group and out on our own in the days after. California sure does have a lot of scenery to offer.

Lonnie:
I think I may have found a distant relative of Ashley's.
I had completely forgotten about this photo.

This was way back in my almost-newbie days here in the forum :)

Ashley's Distant Cousin maybe?? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=67164)

Lonnie:

I had completely forgotten about this photo.

Could be. :D Maybe that was one of Ashley's parents...

My next door neighbor and aunt both had cats with the same eyes, too.

I hope you guys are all ready for another adventure soon.

I'm ready for it. Bring it on! :)

Is that it?

Belmondo
2nd of March 2006 (Thu), 10:53
BTW, after we left you guys at the restaurant Saturday night, we drove over to the Fairfield Inn in Paso Robles. On my last trip to the room with the luggage, I encountered a 'gentleman' in the hallway outside our room.

He was quite naked, and was trying to get into the room across the hall. Evidently there was a group of people having a party, and he had volunteered to go get ice. When I stepped off the elevator, he beat a hasty path back to the room, but his 'buddies' were a little slow opening the door for him.

And you guys thought you had all the fun.

thomascanty
2nd of March 2006 (Thu), 11:13
And you guys thought you had all the fun.

You thought that was fun? ???

If it was a woman, sure... But a "gentleman"? :D

ayotnoms
2nd of March 2006 (Thu), 11:59
hmm
What kind of "gentleman" has a hotel room party with friends where he is naked? If there were women in the room, they wouldn't have condoned such a stunt...heck they'd want him back in the room as soon as possible.

If it was other guys...well, that's just too San Francisco. :D

Not that you looked mind you, but did he have a Prince Albert? That would be a dead giveaway.

It occurs to me that my life experiences pale in comparison to The Inimitable Mr Belmondo.

ayotnoms
2nd of March 2006 (Thu), 12:04
Is that it? I hope not.

Since Maureen misses the scent of the seals, I propose we take another trip if for no other reason than to photograph her sniffing them.

Me thinks her sense of odor has been stunted by being around bed pans.

:D :D

mikegoat
2nd of March 2006 (Thu), 14:23
NOW I understand why Belomondo has adopted a disguise...was everyone at the "hotel" wearing a mask?

Belmondo
2nd of March 2006 (Thu), 15:17
Clarification.....

The gentleman streaker was probably in his forties, and judging by the squeals and laughtereminating through the door, there were women in the room.

Actually, it sounds like they were having a pretty good time.

DwightMcCann
2nd of March 2006 (Thu), 17:17
Yup, now I am worried about, Belmondo!

Maureen Souza
2nd of March 2006 (Thu), 17:37
It was good for a laugh, I'm sure. Knowing myself, I would have made a semi-degrading comment to the guy about his anatomy.

Speaking of a guy's anatomy, I saw Bon Jovi last night up close and personal (in concert) for 2+ hours. Niiiiiice!!!!!!!

Skip stayed home. :)

I'm here in Lompoc. Oh man, what a week this has been. I'd forgotten just how dreadful the moving process is. I still have a ton to do around here, but it's going to take some time to get done.

Lompoc is a small town, but it's exactly what I was looking for. I'm a little bit afraid that it won't be too many years before the same things that drove me out of Fresno are going to catch up to this little corner of the world, though. The really cool news is that Surf Beach is only a ten minute drive from where I live. From the research I'd done, I thought that Surf Beach was only a cliff and you couldn't get down to it. But, nothing could be further from the truth. It's a huge beach with easy access. The bad news is that they shut it down on March 1st, because the Snowy Plover is nesting. It'll be closed until sometime in September. I don't know whether to cry or laugh my head off over the irony.

The second day I was here, they had a storm the likes of I'd never seen before. I've never seen gale-force winds before, but I'd betcha that these winds were close to it. Of course, I picked that day to take my camera to Surf. Heh.... the wind kept knocking me on my butt, but I got some cool shots. Mondo camera shake-- the images look okay for the web, but I doubt they'll hold up to print. Toooo bad for me.

odigi, I'm just down the road in Buellton so let me know when you're moved and settled.
Thanks Dwight, I just might do that. I actually visited Buellton last week, which is kind of weird, huh? I didn't head there on purpose-- just got on a road to see where it lead me. Gads, what a gorgeous area that is.

Starting tomorrow, I'm on deadline and will be for the next month and a half. After that I think we should get this whole group over there-- maybe do lunch at that Pea Soup Andersons, eh? ;-)

g'night!

Odigi, I know about the moving thing ... I just moved to Buellton about four or five months ago and still have many boxes to unpack and furniture coming from various spots. If you like Lompoc now, wait for spring and the flower festival ... truly amazing! I am just off Hwy 246 as you come into Buellton on Sycamore Drive: if you turn left and go toward the elementary school I am on the second block across from a small park. If you turn right and go toward the river there is a brand new park. So, if you have kids (I have no clue of even your gender) it is a super place to visit. In any case, while I, too, am very, very busy, touch base when you get a chance.

Cbock, where are you located?

Steve, we're booked solid for the next few weeks ... maybe we should target the weekend of the Vintner's Festival and have you guys down - April 8th.

Those are great shots Nancy. My wife and I moved to Morro Bay from Fresno last year. We lived in Fresno for 50+ years and were sad but happy at the same time to move here. We are relieved not to have to put up with those 105+ degree summer days. It was an ordeal that I hope not to ever experience again. We too still have many boxes to unpack. We were in Lompoc in July last year and are planning to go back when the flowers bloom. Hopefully we can hookup then and maybe we can talk Dwight and Matt into joining us. Good luck on the continual unpacking.

Kev, I can sure see how moving from Fresno after 50+ years would be a huge change in so many ways. The weather was almost an afterthought for me, but now that I'm here and have had time to think about it.... oh man, I'm so excited that I won't have to deal with that heat anymore. Whew!

Boxes, have I got boxes. I rented a place with a second bedroom, where the idea was to use it to store studio stuff, mainly books and fabric. Only one glitchie to gum up the works: The door to that room is too narrow and at such an angle that the bookcases can't make it into the room. Soooo, I'm sitting here with bookcases lining my already-narrow hallway and some in the smallish "master" bedroom. Boxes in the storage room are stacked floor-to-ceiling..... with no room to get in there. Oy.

I would love to hookup with you, Mrs. Kev, Matt, and Dwight.... and anyone else I'm forgetting. So much fun!

Thanks Steve-- I just saw your own gallery of shots. Really nice work you've got there-- you've got a good eyeball for this stuff.

-----
So Dwight, where did you move from? The countryside surrounding Buellton really is incredible-- you're very lucky. Lompoc flower festival-- been hearing some about that. I guess it's a big event in these parts. My gender is female and I do have kids, but they are way-grown and flown (in their thirties).

Nancy,

I moved all the way from Los Alamos .... California, about 15 miles north on Hwy 101! Moved there from Solvang about ten years ago when the women passed me on between them. Lived in Santa Barbara prior to that. San Francisco prior to that. Skipping farther back I am from the other coast.

Yes, we live in a beautiful place. There is Sideways Country, the National Forest, Santa Barbara, the coast ... just great for photography and bicycling and drinking! :-) You might check out my Live Entertainment Website (http://dwightmccann.com/) under the Chumash Casino logo ... it seems to be my only claim to fame around here and it's why they let me participate at all.

I don't think my four year old is willing to let anyone else watch me these days ... her old man just bought her a two wheeler Saturday! And he's promised to take pictures of her in her ballet outfit when he gets the studio room organized! On the other hand all my 21 year old wants is money when his Mom won't cover for him, sigh. So I expect you will not have to watch me for a while ... although Marna might appreciate it! Lord knows what she told all these people when I wasn't around, sigh.

ayotnoms

... Lord knows what she told all these people when I wasn't around, sigh.

Dwight- when she was with me and Patty she said it was the first opportunity she'd had in days to say a word. I asked her about something I saw on her ears that looked like windburn but she said that was only from listening to you talk.:p

...of course, I kid. I kid

Nancy- Dwight is a good guy...and of course, his lovely ladies Marna and Anna are always there to mellow him out.

I look forward to meeting you at the next get together.

DwightMcCann
6th of March 2006 (Mon), 17:34
Phew, man, if that's all she said then NO PROBLEM! I was afraid she'd say something about how good I look in Anna's tutu or what a dog I am or how she has to make excuses for me with the neighbors and all that stuff she usually shares with company.

Well, not wanting to be too direct here, but does a 2X extender coming tomorrow help you decide?

Already have mine (not to mention the 1.4X TC which is nearly as impressive.).:p

But when you have 300mm, do you really need an extender?

Well, NO. Especially when you have a 500.:p:p:p

However, the edge still might go to Mike since he has a 1.6X crop factor, so his 300 with the 2X TC and 1.6X crop factor is going to be the equivalent of 960 mm.

With my 1D, it would only be 780mm, and the 1Ds, only 600mm.

Of course, the ultimate determinant may be that Mike's is newer (i.e. fresher).

No matter, this recent exchange about exclusive clubs, telephoto L primes, and focal lengths so long you can peer into the soul of the person being photographed well, let's just say the needle on the Jealousy Richter Scale just about snapped off.

...I'm tempted to auction a kidney on eBay to get the money to join the club.

The first pic. It is raining outside so it leaves a little to be desired subject wise, but, hand held 800 ISO on the 1D. It looks heavier than it is. But I wouldn't want to carry it around a lot without the mandatory monopod

I really like my 300 but it's an f/4. I'm thinking of dumping it for the f/2.8, it not much heavier than my 70-200 f/2.8. Around here f/4 is to slow, you don't always get the sun.

Congrats Mike on the 300!!

Congrats Mike on the 300!!

It weighs about 5lbs. It is quite a bit heavier than the 70-200 but...the image quality so far is pretty amazing. I loved the 300 4.0 because it was so light (as in carry) and easy to use, but you are right, light (the kind you can see with) is everything.

Kevin
10th of March 2006 (Fri), 16:11
I haven't looked at the specs on the 300 f/2.8. I didn't realize it was that much heavier than the f/4. Well it will be a balancing act for me but the monopod will come in handy. I guess it's the price you pay for more light.

My apologies. Since I cannot keep track of my own gear, it's not surprising that I would be confused on other people's equipment.

My apologies, Mike.

One of our moderators (IandD) sells Giant Bicycles. Actually, they're normal-sized, but that's the name. They have just about every type/size bicycle you could ever want, including some very trick mountain bikes. I bought one last year that is a flat bar road bike, and it's really cool for old guys like me that can no longer bend over enough to use drop bars.

i was looking at the Giant OCR 3....trouble is...its $160 more than the raliegh :( i like it though. They both have alot of the same components, and for an entry level bike...i think the raliegh is a better deal (unless IandD can get me a killer deal :))

Geez, another spelling monitor in the group, sigh. Cyb, yes, there are always teams training in the valley ... I think they are mostly Europeans who have discovered our Pinot Noir and want to train going from winery to winery! Seriously, I am right in the middle of most of the big training routes, the Century course, and see teams working out all the time. I was riding home a few days before the Amgen on Santa Rosa Road and had one of the T-mobile guys in a follow vehicle (he was leading actually) drive along side me and offer me water! I guess he thought I was dehydrated because I was going so slowly. Of course the team whizzed by me like I was riding backwards about 30 seconds later. :-)

Dwight: do you ever take your camera with you when you go cycling?

It seems like a good way to get some shots that you might otherwise miss zooming by in a car, then again the thought of a fall or accident and having expensive gear spilled on the ground makes me cringe.

DwightMcCann
15th of March 2006 (Wed), 15:35
Steve, I used to take one sometimes ... got a special padded container that attached to the seat post and stuck out the back ... I could probably get my 20D with 24-105mm f/4 into it, but since I don't really go very cross country (only about a five to six mile radius from my house) it generally isn't worth the effort ... but I may give it a try. And, hey, a fall at my age means a lot of damage to me so the camera is hardly an issue!

IanD, I hope that last line is an "in" bicycling joke because it is certainly meaningless to me! :-) Glad you are watching out for those of us who ride. I firmly believe that my riding saved my life ... I had a quadruple coronary bypass a little over a year ago and my only symptom was a pain in my left wrist when riding up my training hill. I am sure that the aerobic conditioning from my little weekend/evening rides protected me against a major heart attack as the one that killed my Dad at 53 ... I am 60. I am currently trying to get back into the habit on both my Giant OCR and Specialized Stump Jumper.

well...i changed my mind again! I am saving up another two hundred dollars to get the specialized bike i really want.

This is an object lesson in how to buy the things you want. Sure you could get something a little less expensive but if it's not what you really, really want you'll lose money in the end by settling for less. Eventually you'll fork over the extra cash for what you wanted in the first place.

This lesson applies to bike purchases as well as it does for cameras, lens, tripods, flashes; except with a bike you'll be in better physical condition. :) :)

Good luck Matt!

I learned this lesson at a young age Steve :( GREAT PICTURE OF ASHLEY Lonnie!...and Dwight...how far are you from Figueroa Mountain Road? seems like an accelent place to take pictures "Indeed. Even Lance Armstrong, Carmichael Training Systems' most famous client, hates Figueroa Mountain Road" :)

DwightMcCann
15th of March 2006 (Wed), 23:51
Cyb, Figueroa Mountain Road runs from Los Olivos past Neverland Ranch and into the Los Padres National Forest. Normally the bikers have early coffee in Los Olivos or drive out past Family School and Neverland and park at the bottom of the start of the uphill by the corner of Midland School property which is about six miles in from Los Olivos. It then runs up into the National Forest, down the other side and out by way of Sunset Valley Road to Armour Ranch Road and onto Hwy 154 a couple of miles North of Lake Cachuma. It is mostly paved but has a lot switchbacks and steep climbs. I don't know the altitude at the top, but along the way you can see out over the Santa Barbara foothills to the ocean. It is where we tend to get snow when we get it ... although our recent storm spread snow way beyond. Anyway, with the information above you can probably find out more than you want to know about it. You should also check out Refugio Road (runs from Hwy 101 into the foothills past Reagan's ranch and down the other side to Hwy 246) as it is not quite as bad but very beautiful ... and Marna and I have ridden up it several years ago. Come on down with your new bike and I'll drive you out ... it's about ten miles from me to Los Olivos.

Cybnew
15th of March 2006 (Wed), 23:53

In all fairness, Spec markets a fine bike. The difference is in the hand made frame on the OCR (same frame and fork on all OCR's, just gruppo differences) The compact style frame was first brought to market by Giant and has since been copied by just about every manufacturer/marketer. Giant's goal has always been to offer the best value for the comsumers money, from the entry level right up to the "Second morgage on the house" carbon framed models.
The best thing to do is to try and demo each one. Let the handling and ride decide for you, but I can tell you which one will be the winner:):):):):)

Cyb, I could possibly manage 20 miles with a good break in the middle. I have several "issues" including bone spurs that make my arm get numb and tingly after about 8 to 10 miles, numbness in certain areas that I will not mention for fear that a moderator will delete this thread, and that sort of stuff, plus I have not been getting the exercise I need since my coronary bypass and moving and starting a business. No heart attack, Dwight. In fact, when we were at Cambria, we were waiting for the results of a routine cardiac check-up. Skip had a few complaints of less energy and a few small episodes of feeling short of breath. Fortunately this was found before he had a The Big One!

Oh, thank God, I thought the swooshing sound was my heart again! The reference was regarding my lack of modesty showing through, much as the emperor in the fabled child's story was naked because, surrounded by "yesmen" who told him his clothes looked glorious, he marched down the public street without a stitch. ...but I kid. I kid.

Actually, I wish I could match your exuberance and outspoken-ness. Alas, I'm truly a humble guy but not in a positive way...more like the political rival Winston Churchill described as, "A modest little person, with much to be modest about";)

I am much more likely to take the pharmacological route than therapy ... unless you mean drug therapy! Yeah, everybody wants to be outspoken like me, except Maureen who almost is ... but it is because they don't figure in the costs of all the people I upset. Even the business about "nice your daughter brought you on this trip" gets me in trouble sometimes. I'm lucky that my two women like me in spite of myself. Oh, and I occasionally take a nice picture.

I haven't been following things too closely, so I'm sure the answer has been posted elsewhere, but I was wondering if you got the diagnosis on your 1Dm2. I know you bought the new camera, but don't recall hearing what happened with your old one.

DwightMcCann

Well, thank you, Steve. You can find the casino events here: http://www.chumashcasino.com/entertainment/. As it turns out, there is nothing this week (well, there is a private event for VIPs on Saturday night that I am shooting) and next week it is a comedian so I won't be shooting it. I am shooting Rodney Atkins as part of the Nashville to You Acoustic Radio Tour tonight at the Maverick Saloon & Grill in Santa Maria.

Tom, I am surprised the camera worked as well as it did ... the sheet that came back with the camera indicated that the shutter was bent among numerous other things. It was odd that it went from working pretty well to having that problem without any additional trauma that I am aware of. But I gotta say that it is really nice to have two professional bodies that are so similar ... for the most part, interchangeable. Once I get the 400mm f/2.8 (late summer is my current timeline) I will use it at the casino by mounting it on a tripod near the light board and have Marna shoot it while I dance around the front of the stage with my smaller lenses (up to 300mm f/2.8.) I did make use of having two lenses at the fight I did a couple of weeks ago and it is really handy.
