Ok, here it is at last. I have narrowed the choices down to three Central California locations based on feedback from the original thread. One thing I have learned in my thirty one years is that you will never please everyone. That being said here are the choices. I was looking at the first weekend in February. If Yosemite is the winner I would like to move it back to May/June so that we can get the killer waterfalls.

I have set the poll to close in one week. That should give everyone a chance to see it.

Looks like Cambria/SLO has taken an early lead. Hearst Castle would be a great trip if we end up there. It would be so funny if we had 15 - 20 of us converge on the tourists with our camera gear :D

SLO is a great little college town. It is about two hours for us, so we could make it a day trip, or take our truck camper up to my brother's house. So, now we need a definite date, eh? :-)

February 4th and 5th work best for me. My wife is going out of town with friends the following weekend and I'd like to be able to go with her. (hallmark holiday month and all...)

I realize that all of you actually live in California, but I'm extremely interested in coming to this thing too. I've only been to Cali a couple times and it would be great to meet all of you.

If any one of you fine Cali people want to put a roof over a 21-year-old college student from Washington State for the weekend, I would be very thankful. I take up very little space and can sing, dance, and solve the Rubik's Cube in 17 seconds. :)

Please drop me a PM if you would like to have me a guest for the weekend.

If not, then does anyone know of a cheap hotel in the Cambria area?

Thanks!

EDIT: Thank you to everyone who was kind enough to offer me their home! Unfortunately, my Spring semester in school now has a conflict for the trek down to California. I wish you all the best!

I'll answer that when nine more people vote for Cambria :)

OK, so I voted for Cambria....8 more votes to go

Oh, man, I hope we meet the weekend of the 18th in SLO or Cambria, although Monterey will work ... I will come in my truck camper which really needs some use! The big question is going to be, "What are we gonna' shoot?" I guess instead of picking up a 500mm f/4L before the meet I will wait to see if someone has one for the 'Swap' part! So, Sam, when are you going to make the cut?

Sam
12th of January 2006 (Thu), 00:03
I set the poll to close after seven days. Some of us don't log in every day and I wanted everyone to have a chance to vote. Tueday we'll know the winning location.

frydryce
12th of January 2006 (Thu), 01:20
18th would work for me as well. Depending on the schedule this could be a day trip for me, but its a good 3 hour drive from the LA area. (I'd better put my order in for my 70-200 quick then =) )

Skip Souza
12th of January 2006 (Thu), 01:39
I'll go whenever or wherever my wife tell me :-)

Sam
12th of January 2006 (Thu), 08:53
Out of the people that put a vote in we should select a guide for teh winning location. I have been to all three but wouldn't consider myself the best person to lead a group around.

I guess I know the Cambria/SLO area the best out of the three, but it was because I had a girlfriend many years ago that went to Cal Poly, so unless you just want to go drinking I can't show you much.

I already have plans & resevations for Yosemite on Super Bowl weekend. If the Cambria area wins out there is a great elephant seal viewing area just north of Hearst Castle.

DwightMcCann
12th of January 2006 (Thu), 16:17
Steven, thank you! :-) I will get there quicker.

I would love to have a guided walking tour of downtown. I love the little stream that runs through where the shops and eateries back onto and overlook it. There is a great mix of architecture and interesting shops. My wife (and 4 year old daughter) are making noises about coming ... she went to school at CalPoly so at least doesn't get lost, but she no longer knows all the nooks and crannies. I'm pretty sure there's a microbrewery downtown, too, although I am not a beer person.

Of course, the coast is fun, too, particularly Hwy 1.

Is this "Super Bowl" thing an eating event or a bowling tournament? Which weekend is it?

Kevin
12th of January 2006 (Thu), 16:53
Since the elephant seals were mentioned I thought I would just throw this in.:) :) :)

Sadly, Dwight, the micro brewery has ceased operation, the last I heard.

As for the super bowl, all I know is that is the best day to go to Home Depot, because it's a ghost town.

Ohhhh, this sounds wonderful. I sure wish I could go. CalPoly is my alma mater and I'd love to hang out in the area for a bit. I wouldn't be able to do anything until spring break or summer, though, so unfortunately, I'm out.

But one of these days, my wife and I would love to head down there. I've thought about going one year for Poly Royal, or whatever they call it these days. I was at the college when they decided to stop having it. I believe it has come back under a different name.

Hey, we must live close to each other. (Pacific Northwest)

We should have our own get together where we all go out with our expenisve equipment and stand in the rain! :)

i'm going to norcal in 6 days then socal in about 10, but won't there long enough to meet up :(

I voted for Cambria. It wouldn't necessarily be my first choice---Yosemite would be that. Cambria, on the other hand, would be a convenient stopoff on one of our trips to the Bay Area, and since we can do those whenever we wish, it wouldn't be hard to schedule.

rrpruett
13th of January 2006 (Fri), 17:16
I would also love to go. I need to make sure we do not have a baseball tournament that weekend.I am in Bakersfield so its not that far.

Maureen Souza
13th of January 2006 (Fri), 17:35
I know Yosemite is a great place to go but this weekend the Yosemite Valley is looking to get it's first snow of the year. Last year at this time they had 6 feet. It is just so unpredictable and I'd rather not wait until the last minute to decide where we go.
If the snowpack improves in the next 2-3 months, we can always make another trip to see the waterfalls. If it doesn't, then we can do another meet next year.

Hey,we've done that trip a couple of times.....in one run!

FYI, San Luis and Cambria are about an hour from each other so we should settle on a specific spot. I think Cambria is the better choice as it is on the coast and has a lot more little quaint places to photograph. San Luis is inland and doesn't have as much to photograph. IMO.

Belmondo
15th of January 2006 (Sun), 20:07
Another place some people might want to stay at is Morro Bay. It is also an interesting place, and Morro Rock is a popular subject for photographers and painters.

By the map, it looks to be about halfway between Cambria and SLO.

DwightMcCann
15th of January 2006 (Sun), 20:26
Well, SLO has a few interesting things to photograph: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=1089141#post1089141, too, but I'm happy with any of those spots!

Skip Souza
15th of January 2006 (Sun), 22:17
Morro Bay is about midway between SLO and Cambria.

Kevin
16th of January 2006 (Mon), 13:35
Cambria is indeed a great place for photo's and great scenery. 12 miles up the coast is Hearst Castle and the tours provide fantastic photo opportunities. 30 minutes down the coast from Camberia is the town of Cayucos and 6 miles further south is Morro Bay. And we can not forget the little town of Harmony just before Cayucos. Here in MB you have the Jetty, the rock, 2 piers, the boat docks, surfers, the Embarcadero and the wildlife. So the agenda is pretty much unlimited between Cambria and Morro Bay.
The Hotels along Moonstone Drive have fantastic views of the coastline, a bit pricey but for a weekend getaway you can't beat it. Morro Bay also has some great motels.
However February 18th is the Presidents weekend so Hotel rooms in the area from Cambria to Morro Bay will fill up fast. I called The Blue Sail Inn here in Morro Bay and because of the 3 day weekend they will not book rooms for only one night even for a group. I fear this to be the norm for that weekend. Let's all pray for good weather, because as we all know...you never know. However the agenda goes we must plan an evening dinner food fest for all and include a dinner photo shoot of fun and laughs.

SWPhotoImaging
16th of January 2006 (Mon), 18:53
The timing of this (coinciding with Pres. day weekend) is why I was anxious to book early, as soon as I know the plan.

Looking forward to whatever we end up with, and to meeting a bunch of you in the process.

Steve

Ok, The poll is closed and Cambria/SLO it is!

I didn't realize it would be a nightmare for everyone to get rooms. Do we want to push this back a couple of weeks?

I am pretty eager to meet everyone, but some people will be driving a long way and will need to stay the night. I am just lazy, so I'll be staying over for sure!

Please chime in so we can get a headcount and make sure everyone is ok with the date.

Maureen Souza
18th of January 2006 (Wed), 02:36
Well..... there is always the option of meeting up in Cambria but staying in SLO, Atascadero or Paso Robles for the night where the rooms shouldn't be in such high demand. There are other nearby towns, Templeton, San Simeon, Harmony, Morro Bay and Cayucos to find motels. Coastal towns will be the hardest to find a room in.

I hope everyone finds a place to stay. Are we planning on meeting in Cambria?

Johnny Thunder
18th of January 2006 (Wed), 02:43

We need a guide to pick it up from here, if anyone lives in the area and is willing to take it on step forward.

I think I will be able to come. I have enjoyed seeing many of the pictures you all have posted and already learned a lot from your knowledge and experience. Maybe some of it will rub off on me. I consider myself a newbie still, been shooting for little over a year.

Hope it works out for me to come.

we should set a place and time to meet on Saturday as well as we all probably wont be getting a block of rooms at one location (any volunteers are welcome, however it looks like some have already booked)

also a roll call including where you are staying would be good so we know who's coming i'll start it off. just copy and paste the list to your post to keep it going.

FYI for those with Hilton Honors cards. the Embassy Suites seems like a nice place to stay. its about $162/night. i'm working on getting a lower price, i'll keep you guys updated on this.

For those with larger pocket books and want to stay in a fun place, look up the Madonna Inn. its $210/night our weekend, and i hear its a fun place to stay. Alas my girlfriend is a die-hard Hilton Points collector so we'll be at the Embassy =)

Would any of the people staying in SLO be willing to take on a passenger? I'd like to leave my wife with the car so that she can take our kids around while I shoot.

Another option would be for her to drop me off at our meeting place and I could ride with anyone willing to take on a passenger for the day. I'd be more than happy to share the cost of the gas.

Thanks,

I made my reservation for the 18th, but I plan to head up there very early, so if everyone else is arriving on the 17th, I should still be ok.

I'm staying at the San Simeon Lodge. The reviews are kind of mixed, but I picked it this morning because 1) they allow dogs, and 2) I got a room for $60/night. Not bad for an ocean-front motel. I just now searched again and the cheapest rate I found this time for the same motel was $145, with the rest all at $180. I'd better print this confirmation email and web page in case there's a problem at the desk! :D

I think we should meet up at the Coffee Den on Saturday morning in Cambria. SLO is 35 miles south of Cambria. San Simeon is a bout 10 miles north of Cambria.

What do you all think?

One other thing..... if we all want to have a big POTN dinner on Saturday night, we need to reserve a place big enough for all of us.
I was thinking of the Moonstone Beach Bar and Grill in Cambria.

Is there any way we can get a head count?

In case anyone gives hoot, Skip and I are staying at the Creekside Inn on Main. St. in Cambria.

alright, what time are we thinking of meeting up? Yahoo!Maps says its a 5 hour drive, I can probably make it in 3.5 (310 miles, 85mph average speed, No Problem) figuring if I need to leave the night before, or the morning of (had to leave the house at 3:30 for the Catalina meet, my fault for waiting until the last minute to book a ticket for the boat) I was thinking of leaving town around 7am, which should put me in town between 10:30 and Noon, depending on traffic.

We have a headcount as long as those who are attending fill in the list I started above.

As it stands we have 15 maybe 16 on our list.

There are no reservations available at the San Simeon State Park camping area this time of year ... it is first come, first served, so I may be taking an extra day and bringing the camper up on Thursday and have Marna and Anna drive up Friday. If there are no spaces I will go park in Cybnew's front yard!

May I suggest a remarkable hotel in the area? It's called the Ragged Point Inn. It's north of Hearst Castle on PCH, not too far. A little expensive but the view is worth it. The hotel is built on the cliffs, you see the Pacifoc ocean to the horizon from almost every room. They have a good restaurant, a grill, a bar and trails all the way down to the ocean (about a 300 ft drop 0ff). The photo ops are remarkable. This shot was taken at Ragged Point at sunset.

Marna just made reservations for us at Morro Bay State Park. $75 for three nights in our truck camper.

I know Maureen was trying to drum up interest in a dinner at Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill Sat nite, and there was talk of gathering at the coffee den (Cambria) Saturday morning, but with folks so spread across the area, maybe a morning gathering in one area and an evening in another is a better idea? I know I'll be hitting the coffee den anyway, since it's the best coffee in Cambria, but time is the question. After morning magic light hours?

DwightMcCann
24th of January 2006 (Tue), 18:14
Well, a number of folks look like they are arriving Friday so perhaps we should agree on a Friday night meet, probably for dinner, at a place that likes children. Then we could exchange cell numbers and make additional plans. In addition to that we should probably agree on a Saturday morning meet, most likely at this "Coffee Den" place so that the Saturday arrivers know where to meet up with the early birds. It would also be nice to have addresses and phone numbers of any meeting places.

One great thing about this process, I will know exactly what to do when I can get a group to come to Buellton/Solvang/Santa Ynez/Los Olivos/Santa Barbara! Having a local willing to share a phone number will be a big asset (that's me) along with having several diverse opportunities available, from wine tasting photography to downtown Santa Barbara photography to beach photography to miniature horse ranch photography to shooting in my studio and a trip to the entrance to Neverland as well as giving out the location of the casino (I know Mrs. Belmondo likes to take their cash!)

I won't be arriving till rather late Friday. It is about a 6 hour drive for me. I would guess I will be there between 10pm-11pm. So I won't be at any Friday evening activities. I vote for an early start on Saturday. The day will go by quickly. We could have a sunrise activity, then meet for coffee later so that those driving up on Saturday can meet up with the rest of us.

Sunrise is at 0648 on the 18th
Sunset is at 1749 on the 18th

I got a the following info off the web:

Cambria Coffee Den Roasting Company, 761 Main Street, Cambria, (805) 927-0670
Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill, 6550 Moonstone Beach Dr, Cambria, (805) 927-3859

For those who will be arriving on Saturday and probably missing the sunrise (unless you're nuts and want to drive at 3am to catch it) here's Sunday's sunrise activity for the Sunday group =) But i think meeting at the Coffee Den would be a great hangout to wait/meet everyone in the morning after the sunrise shoot. say around 8-9am?

Cybnew, you should edit your original post to remove your numeric phone number, and replace it with "eight zero five, etc", because some Internet search engines record found phone numbers, and you never know where that can end up.

Montaņa de Oro is about a 50 minute drive from Cambria. I might be up to it. Depends on how late I end up getting in Friday night. I'm thinking I'd rather catch sunrise in Cambria, since at this point it looks like that's were we're meeting for breakfast. Then maybe head to Montaņa de Oro after breakfast if that's were people want to go.

Sunset at Montana e Oro would be awesome as it is on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. there is a walking path out there and it is also a good time to see wildlife. Then we can drive the 10 minute commute into Morro Bay for dinner.
I think we should meet in Cambria Saturday morning.
1) For those who want to do the early bird special at 6 a.m. can meet at Moonstone Beach Dr./Cambria.

2) We can set the group meeting time at 9 a.m. at the Coffee Den and spend the day in the Cambria area.

3) Late afternoon we can drive the hour drive down to Montana de Oro for a couple of hours of shooting and do the sunset.
4) Then dinner in Morro Bay around 7-7:30 p.m..

For those staying in SLO or Cambria, the commute back to the motels is less than an hour.

What do you think?

I was looking at a map of the Cambria area. Is there really a beach called Moonstone Beach or is it really San Simieon Beach, which is along Moonstone Beach Drive?

Would anyone like to meet at a specific location along the beach, or just make the sunrise shoot a do your own thing and then meet for breakfast. I would enjoy meeting up with someone. There are a few of us staying at the Creekside Inn who could all head down there together.

Moonstone is inbetween cambria and san simeon (dont ask directions, as i dont know how to get there yet). We are trying for dinner in morro bay. If i can get everyone to agree on the outrigger then i can probably get them to section it off for us, or even close for us. Its a pretty good restaraunt with a full bar.

Since I don't know the area, I'm OK with dinner at the Outrigger.

LoL...ok...its fairly good food (mostly seafood as its right on the bay) but they do have steaks and burgers, and a kid's menu for those traveling with young ones

I'm planning to go shooting on the beach off of Moonstone Beach Dr., probably near the boardwalks across from the Best Western Fireside Inn. I like the rocks and tidepools and the waves there in the early light.

where is this dinner thing we are planning? cambria or morro bay?

the pictures on google of montana do oro are promising. we could head there in the afternoon for our sunset shoot.

what should we do in the afternoon? i vote we fly charlesU and his models out here for a glamour photography seminar! hahah =)

If heading to Montana de Oro for late afternoon, Cayucos would be fun in early afternoon. Walk-away shrimp cocktails on the beach, etc.

good luck with your shrimp cocktails on the beach in cayucos...all i have found there lately are a bunch of my "friends" being dicks to tourists....but try Skippers...i think they have shrimp cocktails. although, the outrigger has a pretty good cocktail if u can wait until dinner

Had one back in Sept. Although it was far to overcast for any Great sunrise shots.

This might be a fun place to check out. I know I am going to at least go see it sometime while we are there. I saw this on California Heartland and Public TV. It is an oddball house:

Starting in 1928 and continuing for 51 years, Arthur Harold Beal (alias Capt Nit Wit or Der Tinkerpaw), collected junk, trash, and recycled goods to use in his castle. A favorite material seems to be old Busch beer cans, which were always in supply. Be he also used washer drums, car rims, shells, tile, car parts, and old stove and about anything else people wanted to throw out.

The property is now owned and being maintained by Michael and Stacey O'Malley. Michael gives an awesome tour of the property and all you have to do is call to make an appointment. The tours are free and everyone really enjoys themselves. There are also some gift items available including T-Shirts, business card magnets and coffee cups.

Has anyone been to Salmon Creek Falls. From what I read, the trail head is about 9 miles north of Cambria. Not sure how much of a hike it is to the falls, but the photos I saw of the falls looked very nice.
