View Full Version : g2 problems

I love the picture quality from my new g2. There are four things that I've found that are minor problems:

1) the lens doesn't always retract when I power down. Sometimes, I have to turn the camera on, wait and then shut down again. Doesn't seem to be a discharged battery-it happens randomly and I haven't found any cause yet.

2) The auto focus seems to flash the "can't focus" warning a lot more often than my G1. Anybody else sensing the weak-focusing characteristic.

3) RAW photos look great. However, it appears that the JPEGs (even the highest quality ones) have more jpeg artifacts than the G1.

4) when viewing photos on the LCD, jpeg photos usually show bright and clear (this is especially helpful when setting the focus or reviewing the photo for focus). RAW photos, on the other hand are badly JPEGed making focus checks pretty difficult. This is especially problematic given problem number 2.

Anybody have any comments on this?

hi john,

i have noticed the same things too. my lens failed to retract a few times but the camera doesn't seem to be hurt by it. i've seen some others complain about the same thing. re: the focusing vs. the G1, i don't have my G1 to compare side-by-side but, to me, they seem about the same...the G2 seems to like being put into macro mode at a further distance than the G1 though and i've wondered myself how much more i notice the inability to focus because of the new green focus-lock indicator on the G2's LCD.

re: jpeg compression, the G1 was actually MORE aggressive...just comparing file sizes for comparative settings, you can see that the files are larger on the G2:

1024x768@fine=220kb on the G1, 280kb on the G2
640x480@fine=80kb on the G1, 120kb on the G2

and, yeah, the thumbnails the camera generates for RAW images are lousy.

overall, i'm very happy except for the soft photos and occasional focusing hiccups but i still cannot think of another camera that suits my needs as well as the G2.

happy shooting.
