On this Forum, search the Board named "Canon EOS-D (digital) cameras," looking for the word "dust." I didn't count them but it appears that there are hundreds of hits.

Is it possible that there is a connection between the sudden surge in 10D availibliity in the U.S. and all the cameras returned for the dreaded dust problem?

I think Canon would be required to call them refurbs and sell them at a lesser price after they've been returned to the factory.

Dust is not unique to the 10D. Whenever you get a DSLR that has removeable lenses you run this risk. We've all ended up with specks on our negatives.

I've actually taken my 10D into Canon twice to get it cleaned (they didn't charge). The last time the technician showed me how he did it and I do mine out of habit before I am heading out to take anything important.

Preventative maintenance and care in changing lenses will help alot.

HOW did the Canon technician clean the sensor, a brief explanation could benefit all digital SLR users.
(Your last sentence speaks volumes in the prevention of dust.)

Wait for Olympus :D

"Supersonic Wave Filter" cleans CCD at each camera start-up (dust is shaken from CCD)

The Olympus E-1 solves a problem that has long been an Achilles heel of interchangeable lens-type digital SLRs - dust contamination of the camera insides from changing lenses. The Supersonic Wave Filter causes an ultra-high-speed vibration to occur, making dust and/or other particles literally fall off the imager, which are then captured on a special adhesive tape. This function is invoked at each start-up of the camera but may also be manually effected.
