A day in the life of Malai the Kitty.
First, she stares at the bird for ages, wishing she could somehow scale the wall-unit in order to get at the cage, break in and eat the little birdie. Faced with the sheer impossibility of that endeavour, she heads over to the couch, likely to dream about the bird, and the crunchy tastiness of its feathers. Yum. Then, she repeats the first step, repeating the cycle. All day every day.

Hello folks, new Canon t1i owner here with my first post. I am very new to slr's and photography in general and this site has been a huge help. very glad I found POTN.
You know it's funny, I have always merely (barely) tolerated my wife's cats. I left them alone and they left me alone.
Since I got this new camera I have found myself following them around the house taking tons of pictures of them. They are not sure what the hell is going on and my wife finds it quite entertaining to see me "stalking" them and actually being nice to them. Heck I even brushed Casper (the white one) for a picture.
Anyway here a couple pics of my wife and now my cats.

Posters : see how I deleted his pics before I replied to him so they would not re-post and waste space? If you read the rules here, they ask you to do this. No need to re-post someone's pics over again, possibly multiple times. Even if there were no text to quote, it will still quote the poster's ID. I have a feeling this will be an ongoing problem though.

This is a really excellent image. If you have Lightroom, you might consider boosting the exposure on the cat 1/2 a stop.
Again, it's a really compelling photo.

I thought I'd posted a reply to Luke's pic. I know I said something out loud when I saw him and thought I'd posted a comment, but I guess I got distracted. He is a handsome boy! I'm glad you got the pic posted.
Don't let the lack of comments bug you though. There are a lot of folks who look but don't reply.
Here's one of Morry, a feral rescue from this summer. He'd been the "problem child" of all the summer rescues, being very hissy, swatting at me and being very anti-social to people, though he loves my other cats. Another person who does rescues suggested isolating him from the others. Since last Sunday night, he's been in "solitary" in the guest bath. I go in several times a day to work with him. At first, it was rough going for both of us, but now he purrs when I go in and lets me pet him most all the time. I can tell he's still wary, but he's made great progress. He's not ready to rejoin the rest yet, but he may be halfway there.
I took the camera in yesterday and spent a while taking pix of him. This was one of my faves.

Thanks, Mike. My goal is to keep working with him so he's adoptable. There were times this summer I didn't dare approach him since he'd bitten me twice and scratched me a couple of times early on. Trying to get him in a crate and to the vet for shots and neutering was a real challenge. That's why I'm so thrilled with his progress this week.
If anyone wants to see more pix of him, I put a few more up (http://picasaweb.google.com/Lavanut/Cats#) from the "photo session" yesterday along with a couple of my other cats. :)

If your cats are anything like mine, by the time your set up they've buggered off..... Best to keep to simple bounced flash or natural light and fast lenses IMO. Even just the flash has them stomping off at times. :(

This is Softy, who died a couple years back. One day he decided to wake up and drop dead on us. He had been declawed by someone and had health issues, asthma for one. I'll never forget him. Maybe he's in a better place. My other cats were not nice to him, and with no claws he had a hard time defending himself, so it wasn't a good match but I felt sorry for him being at the shelter.

lavanut : Gizmo is a very handsome cat! Is that a male cat?
Yes he is. He was the rescue from last summer. He and his brother were little feral kittens that showed up in my garage one night. I took the trash out and much to my surprise saw this little kitten head sticking out from near the water heater. I managed to catch them both that night. I found a home for his brother and ended up keeping him after I had to have his dad put to sleep.
He was a sweet tom cat stray in the neighborhood who I'd taken a liking to. I'd feed him and pet him some when he came around. He got hurt, and when I caught him and took him into the vet to get stitched up and neutered, he tested positive for FIV. With the combination of his injuries, the fact that he was a stray, and with his FIV status, we thought the best thing was to euthanize him. It about broke my heart. I brought him back home and buried him in my backyard since it was probably the closest thing to a home he'd known. Gizmo looks so much like his dad I just had to keep him.
This was the Gizman right after I caught him. He was probably about 5 wks old.

And this was his daddy (nicknamed KC, for Kitty Cat) lounging on my back deck.

PS - My other cats weren't really mean to Softy but they didn't seem to befriend him much, so it was kind of sad to see that.
I think Softy was really a victim of declawing. Someone had him declawed and then when he pooped on the floor indoors, as many declawed cats tend to do, they gave him up at an animal shelter. I HATE it when people do that! Softy used to often poop on the carpet. My sister's declawed cat does it too.
