They all look great! Looks like you're having better weather where you are, we're drowning up here in the Pacific Northwest.

thanx everyone! i have hundreds of pictures of dogs. these are a few of the better ones that i shot this weekend in carmel and monterey.

i am a dog and animal lover. about three times a year my dog and i stay in monterey (where i was raised) for a long weekend. we hit all the beaches and take lots of pictures :) .

Great shots! Nice & Sharp.

Funny - this shot reminds me of a seal, if you could photoshop the ears off.

Ed ,can you tell me the approximate sharpness settings for these images?
Coincidentally i just took a few pics of my dogs on a beach with a cheapo lens .Comparing my images with yours would help me decide wether to go for the 70-200/4 one day

ron -- i use an editing program called irfanview.

i push the sharpening button once and it either works or doesn't.

if there's a way to adjust sharpening i don't know how to do it....but i am in the process of trying to find out.

PP isn't my strong suit :) .

Nice post, nice pics, Ed. The 70400f4 is one heck of a lens indeed.

And Sam, keep me posted on any developments with the CA-get together. I voted Yosemite; in fact, make it late April as that is when I'm going there anyways :)

Beautiful. Like I said before in another thread "who needs the 2.8 version?"
Well unless you are shooting indoors.

I know...I think we might break a record! I haven't had 1 day with sun since I got my 70-200.

Ah ok! I understand that program well.
I find irfanview gives rather too strong sharpening results most times. No real surprise as it only has a single setting and isn't designed for such a job.(but isn't it SO good at what it does do ! ...had to put that little plug in,in case some haven't got irfanview yet;))

If you have a photoshop type program with Un Sharp Mask (USM) and want to experiment here are some base settings to play with-

For screen sized images ,set the threshold on zero, the radius on 0.3 and then play with the amount until it looks right (sharp but not overdone)

For large images intended for printing, set the threshold on zero, the radius to 0.6 ,and experiment with the amount

Now i'm off to sharpen a few pics with irfanview to compare them :)

thanx for the good info, ron. i am at the point where i really want to work on my PPing. wish i weren't so lazy :) .

my buddy says you can adjust sharpening on irfanview if you batch process so maybe you can do a single photo as a batch? batch is new to me too so i really don't know.

maybe i need to do more work with elements which i find cumbersome compared to irfanview.

btw, i really like your dog photos. here's a 100 crop with the 70-200L f4 that may help you.
