I doubt if I can make it, but I do want to say that Utah is a wonderful state, especially in areas around Moab. Very scenic.

I keep forgetting that there's anything other than Canon... strangely when I go into stores I don't even see any other cameras unless it says Canon.... sari.

Totally understand. Right now I think there's an uproar about N*Kon's. I think Canon has great stuff and I will keep buying it. But some places are exclusive to other companies.

Said like a true Westerner.

My husband's family always has a reunion in the Uintahs in Wyoming, but we will be in SLC sometime to visit family there. Besides Temple Square there are lots of Canyons and parks. We've been to Zions and Bryce, but not with the little boys. We've never been to Arches. That would be fantastic. Let's work on it. We have time.

What sort of time frame are you interested in? A day? Two days? Myself, I am looking to take a week or more from work for vacation sometime in summer and I would love to meet up with friends from POTN. I do need to know when so I can schedule the time from work.

I've visited Zion and Bryce also, although not recently, and not with a good camera or skills. Last year I made my way to Arches, Goblin Valley, Dead Horse Point, and surrounding area and came away with some great images.

Scenic Highway 12 in southern Utah is a little known gem, but so worth the time to drive and explore. The drive begins just west of Bryce Canyon NP and ends near Capitol Reef NP. It covers approx 120 miles with scenery that simply amazes the mind. More information here. http://www.scenicbyway12.com/

The Uintas are beautiful country, we camp there at least once every year.

I'm open for most anything. Just getting out of town with family and/or friends with camera in tow is enough for me.

We will be at the reunion July 12-15, I think. So, I am thinking to go south from SLC the week after. I will talk to my family and see where we would gather. I think I only have time for one day to spend with the POTN members there because it is such precious time for my husband to spend with his 7 brothers and sisters.

Sounds good to me. Now to run it past the BOSS(wife).

The heat really isn't so bad; just drink plenty of water, and wear light colored clothing with a hat.

I completely understand the time constaints when family is so far away. Is all of his family in or around SL?

Welcome aboard Mel. Where you located?

Most of my husband's family are in UT, and he has these reunions every 2 years. So, we are going to visit people a lot, attending sessions, etc. So, if we are to plan something for a meet, it would have to be around that. I would love to have my niece, Lizz Davis, a wedding and portrait photographer in SLC speak with us. She uses all Canon equipment and has a small studio.

Thanks Tom,

I am actually in Washington but have family just across the Utah border in Wyoming and N.M. So a July visit could make a nice all around trip for me. I think the get together would great fun.

Me. With so many expenses having families and such, there's got to be some fun for grown ups. Utah is perfect for great pictures. So, let's get together, even if it's just here.

Welcome to the Forum! Have you been "a guest" for a while and how did you find out about the forum?

Actually, I am just barely getting into photography now. I know pretty much nothing. I am starting school in August for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography (well, Art and Visual Communications/Photography), but I've yet to start, so I know nothing as of now.

All I do know is that I am 24 and have loved photography since I was 11.

And I actually searched google for a photography forum, this was the best I found :)

This forum is the best. What equipment do you currently have? I have been using Canon since I was a teenager and I love the support from the people I've come across. It is a fun hobby. I don't do any scrapebooking, but I even have friends that have bought XT's recently to have more control over their photos. Love digital!

JorgenH

Don't kill me, but all I have right now is a Nikon N75 Film Camera... I know, I know, but truthfully, I really like Nikon and Canon equally.

For digital I am looking at the 8mp Rebel XT, but they are quite a bit of change to fork out for a camera to learn on. That and the Nikon D50 are the only two cameras I am looking at though. The D50 is lighter on my wallet, but the Canon is a better camera.

I guess if I choose the Nikon though, I probably shouldn't be posting here, huh?

It's okay. We have some N*kon users always lurking here anyway. I just feel like this is home and the Canon users here are so fun and supportive. I've had so many questions answered. Most questions have already been asked and I just search threads started already. Sometimes I have questions specifically for me, like having small hands, or not being able to figure something out on my own. You are more than welcome to stay around and see what issues are here. Right now the lates is the Canon announcement at the end of the month. You might be able to afford an XT or 20D or 10D for a under $600 in a few weeks. :)

Every year Canon, as well as the other companies, introduce new models of cameras and lenses and accessories like printers and such. When those announcements come and the old models are still on the shelves, there tends to be a fall-out on EBAY or at the shops themselves. You may be in for some nice gear, not new models, but still great stuff. I just bought my 20D after Christmas, and I knew another model would be coming out, but I didn't care. I really wanted the 20D, can't afford or need the 5D ($3200). It's something people with gear have to consider every time it happens. Do you upgrade or stay with what you have? With Canon, even the 300D is a good camera. So, don't be surprised if you can afford an XT soon.

If you are short on time and in the St. George area check out Snow Canyon. It's not huge but there are some great photo spots there...........if by chance there is some rain the colors (red rock) really show well there.

SuzyView
14th of February 2006 (Tue), 17:01
Thanks. I'll have to look at that. My sisters swear they are going to retire in St. George and I've been there twice, both times there were thunderstorms which were amazing, but no gear. We are probably going to have a short trip as my husband is working all the time. When we go out west, it's usually to see his family. That takes 80% of our time, which is nice. But that is our vacation for the year, every other year. This time we wanted to go see the Grand Canyon, but we heard you need a year prior reservation now. So, we'll probably stay in UT for picture taking. Just to let you all know, my husband supports my habit (hobby, more like) and lets me do whatever makes me happy with the gear I have. He takes fantastic pictures most of the time we are out because he climbs to high spots or he ventures to the edge of the cliff. I hate him for that ;), but in seriousness, I love the mountains because of him. And UT is a great place to capture some of nature's most beautiful sites.

I guess I could wait, but the only digital camera I have now is a Sony Point and Shoot. I'm sick of it. I am trying to get comfortable with exposures and aperture/shutter speeds/etc, and it is so hard to do on a film camera.

I'll keep my eye open. If you see any good deals on Canons (preferably the XT or 20D), let me know.

Ok, suzie now I really am getting into this idea. I have family in Salt lake and a few hours out of. My bestfriend and fiance are extreme hikers and know every canyon in the state :D so, it's just a matter of twisting her ear for areas that would be good.
Don't hurt me but i'm not terribly interested in Temple Square... I know, I know, beautiful architecture wonderful city etc.. But I would love to get outside... and it will be blazing ugly hot. lots of water bottles and sunscreen

It really isn't THAT hot in Northern Utah. I live about 20 minutes South of SLC and it averages about 80 in the Summer. 90 on extreme days.

In July, it's hot. Granted, it is a dry heat. I'm in VA and it's humid and hot. Last year we had 117 in the shade the day we gathered to get corn from the church parking lot. It was HOT and HUMID and I would take a UT hot day over that any time! :)

I would have to agree. I went to New Orleans in OCTOBER! It was very humid (of course). I prefer dry heat. But I've lived in Utah for my entire life, ha.

Well, I bought the plane tickets to be in SLC on May 2 and returning May 5. I would love to get together with POTN friends in UT sometime on Thursday for a short time, if you can make it. I'm planning to have lunch with a friend here and I hope to spend some time with my son, but would love a little time with POTN members who can make it into the city. If you can, PM and I will see what we can do. Can't wait. I heard it was 65 degrees in Provo yesterday. My son spent the whole day outside walking around. He said the flowers are all blooming and the trees are amazing.

Yes, it seems spring is finally arriving here. Time to get out the macro lens and do some flowers.

It looks as though I will be working the thursday you are in town. If we get slow at work, I'll take a half day to go shooting. Have an enjoyable time.

SuzyView
11th of April 2006 (Tue), 16:38
Tom, would love to see you. I'm meeting with my niece and one other POTN member. If you can come, we'll make it an afternoon. :) I'm bringing my 20D with 24-70L with a few other things. Do I really need a wide angle lens?

MetalTom
11th of April 2006 (Tue), 17:54
What do you plan to shoot? That is the key question. Temple square, 24 might work, but wider or even a TS would be way cool. Heading up the mountains, 24 will most certainly work.

One always needs a wide angle lens, yet I've managed so far with 28mm being the widest I own, and I shot for two years with 50 being my widest.

The 24-70 is probably next on my list, but more for the speed than the width. Next after that is 16-35, again for the speed but also for the range.

If work is slow I will take off and join up with the group; if we're busy, I'll just have to wait until July to meet up with all of you. I do have that time scheduled off.

SuzyView
11th of April 2006 (Tue), 18:00
Thanks, Tom. So many things to think about. I will probably take my 20D with 24-70L attached and add the 50 1.4, 85 1.8 and kit lens and 580EX with bounce. That's it. I can't imagine needing more. I may just throw in my bracket and the off shoe cord and call it a day. I will have to take all of that on the plane and back. Hope we can meet up. In July my family will all be with me so it'll be hard to get away for more than a day. But I already told my husband that he can spend time with his family and I will go off with the POTN members for a while. Still should be nice in May.

I'm meeting David for lunch and then we are going to walk around Temple Square to scout out shooting places. I guess the grounds have some spots that are primo, but I'm interested in some other venues. I have to do the obligatory group shots and it's going to be pretty big. That's on Thursday. My son is taking me into SLC for the day. He's working in Provo. So, I figure after lunch, around 1 we can all meet.

I like that idea... I can drive down on Wednesday spend the evening and morning with my bestfriend.. get up early to get some of the canyon shots i've been daydreaming about and then meet up with y'all in early afternoon... My aunt was done there a bit ago for her general conference so I can always ask her about places are you thinking about staying in the Temple Square area or starting there and then moving on??.... Just wondering... keep me posted....

Been there. It's so hot in July. I am going to be in SLC July 5-7 for sure. My family is having lunch again at the Joseph Smith building probably on Thursday the 6th. If you guys want to meet again, we can do something that afternoon. I'm up for it. I'll have to convince my spouse, but I think he'll be okay with it. The only other time is the next week on Tuesday.
