I am currently attending NYIP and using Canon S1 IS. Upgrading camera right now is not option. Would that camera be good enough for say taking calendar shots? Or is it more of an advanced P&S camera?

I'd say that this camera is limited at best. It's only a three megapixel camera and I think that no comercial stock agency - like someone making calendars - would even look at such work. I've heard of people interpolating the shots to make them bigger but I wonder how stupid they think the agencies are. Once glance that the EXIF information would tell them what's going on.
Anyway, here's the thing. You need a better camera if you are trying to do professional work. If I'm doing a lecture to university students who are involved with photography for fun, I won't "demand" that they have better gear just because it's their hobby. But when I talk to photography students I tell them the truth, and that is they need a certain level of equipment.
So save your money and buy something like a used 10D and a decent lens.

Thanks Dave - I am going to learn as much I can with what I have. In the meantime I will start saving for a more advanced camera.
