I am moving to Scotland shortly, and I want to take shed loads of landscape photographs. Is this a good lens to use for the job? Would others in a similar price bracket be better? If so, why?
Your knowledge is appreciated!

Long as scotland has sunny days. Kinda slow, but for that kinda price on 500mm, who can argue?

depends where in scotland - I'm from Glasgow and it sure isn't sunny very often...! I would imagine that the lense can cope with overcast days...?

If ALL you're doing is landscapes, there are many better lenses for it. Faster, wider, lighter...

10-20mm Canon, 12-24 Tokina, 17-85 Canon, even the Kit lens, etc etc etc. Landscapes typically benefit from WIDE lenses and deep DOF. You can even stop down the kit lens and get good sharpness.

I would think you'd want something much wider for landscape photography (e.g., 10-22, 17-40, 24-70, etc.).

Kinda depends how many lenses you want in your bag and how much you want to spend ;)

Actually, from what I've seen from other users, it's quite sharp at 500mm.

As is often the case imagination fails to relate to reality ... at least based on my experience of having owned one. I found it did a great job all the way through. Having owned the rather tasty 300mm IS L f4 and 100-400 IS L I fancy I'll go back to ther Bigma for my next big travel adventure.
