I received an email from canon, announcing their new firmware release.

http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/EOS10D/10D_firmware-e.html.

In the description, it says that the fix is only for:
1.It increases the reliability of USB communication when used with the camera direct print.
2.It corrects wrong simplified Chinese letters on MENU.

How come some ppl say that there are enhancement in the focusing, noise, etc ???

It probarbly isn't. Thanks to Canon not commenting
on this firmware are, again, rumours going
round that the firmware update fixes more
the just listed.

Seems Canon hasn't learned much from the
10d back focus issue in the public relation
area. Seems Canon doesn't trust his customers
or is afraid of claims

It all depends upon how the chip is programmed.

As I understand EPROMs - the firmware memory chips:

if the firmware is written to the chip in discrete blocks (areas) with each area holding information about a particular function then only the blocks which are to be upgraded need to be deleted and rewritten.

if the firmware is written as one block then it all has to be deleted and rewritten in one go.

The latter case would account for the size of the upgrade and would bear no relationship to what was being changed in the firmware.

Does anyone know the EPROM/firmware size? Presumably Nikon will as they will have hacked the 10D firmware to see how it is programmed - and Sigma, Olympus, Pentax and the rest..........

The chances are VERY slim that it writes incremental info to the bios/eprom,... in every case that I have experience,. a firmware update constitutes a complete overwrtie of the former firmware. Thus when it fails,. you have a PC,. piece of hardware, or Camera thaat will not function at all, as the original firmware is lost.
