I just got my new camera (a cannon 10d) and was trying to get my old 540ez speedlight flash to work. It will not work in any other mode than manual, and then only intermittently. Is there anything besides buying a new flash that I can do to make it work like it does with élan 7. Is there any hope of a firmware update to fix the problem.

Hi,

The 540ez flash is unsupported by Canon DSLRs. You've to get a 550ex or 420ex to work in other modes than manual. That's in your user's manual.
I read in my D30 & d60 user's manual, So I gues it's the same for 10D

No, there will not be an firmgrade since there is no support for EZ-flash. You just have to get an E-TTL flash like the EX-series or the Sigma EF 500 DG Super/ST

I recommend the 550EX, as the 420EX is purley E-TTL.
