just taken receipt of replacement 10D and the file numbering was set to continuos.
The first Frame was
//177CANON/ (folder) and IMG_7747 (image)
shouldn't this be
100CANON and IMG_1101

ok I did a search and found the link between D60 and 10D file numbering.
I guess I'll never know the first frame number

depends on the CF-card. If you had put a new card in, it should have been so.

My understanding is that if anyone has inserted a card to test the camera and that card already had a numbered file on it, the 10D will use the next number and remember the number it is up to.
My camera started with IMG_9904.JPG when I inserted the card that had previously been used with my old Nikon CP 950. I Reset the numbering then put it back to continuous. That got it starting from IMG_0001.JPG and after 3.5 weeks it is now up to IMG_3355.JPG.
