Woohoooo you're getting the 10D this weekend!!! ;)

I can't advise you about the low light lens out of experience .... but if you can carry the load and pay up for it I'd say the 70-200/f2.8 ?

One usually stops down his lens for photographing fireworks. I used my Canon EF 28-105 f/3.5-f/4.5 for all of these. Fuji Velvia 50 was used and the lens was stopped down to f/8-f/11 while I opened and closed the shutter with a cable release. Use the slowest speed film, or digital ISO you have.

Nice shots richie! So it seems you don't really need a fast lens for those kind of shots ...
Cool

Cool thanks, I plan on getting for starters 28-135 USM, then, the 100-400L IS, thinking about the 70-200L IS because that lens gets such great reviews. I want a macro, 100 or 180 and maybe the 24-70L USM.

Some may overlap and I am trying to decide which can be left off.

And, I said if I get the 10D, if I were buying this weekend, I would not be saying. I would want it to be a surprise. Geez

LMAO

LOL but you already killed the surprise by asking for a 10D lens recommendation for the 4th of july.
Ah don't worry Frederique, I for one will act very surprised when you show your first 10D pic :)

BTW I also went ahead and ordered a small backpack from B&H and it should get here early next week. Got the LowePro Micro Trekker 100, I only had a quick real life look at it so it's kind of a guesswork if it will fit the 10D with the 70-200/f4 and also store a 28-135 and the 420EX ......
Best thing would be a collection of bags for every need :)
Geeze ... more money ...... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hey bluebomberx, what shutter speed are you using for those pics. I guess you implied that you are using bulb, but how long are you actually keeping it open?

BurningArrow,

That is a UNCONFIRMED RUMOR!!! I never said I was buying the 10D, just asked questions about the lens.

When the pyro is launched, you can see a tracer. My camera was mounted on a tripod with a pan/tilt head. With it, you can follow the tracer up. Just before it explodes, open the shutter with a cable release. After it fans out, close the shutter. An alternative to closing the shutter, as illustrated in #3, is covering the lens with your hand. This way more than one burst can be captured. You will also have to MF to the best of your ability. Hope this answers your question.

Your photos look fantastic Bluebomb!

Much better results than I had,
I was experimenting with fireworks shots and used a smaller aperture and longer exposure.

Shutter speed: 30 sec
Aperture: 22
Flash: Off
Metering mode: Multi-segment
Self-timer: 65 secs
ISO: 100
Focal length: 85.0mm

thanks for the advice I'll try your setup
