This thing is pretty much impossible to tell. You can get some quote here:
http://photographersindex.com/price-ed-calc.htm
and here
http://www.editorialphoto.com/resources/estimator/estimator.asp
But this things range A LOT from place to place not to mention from country to country. But I hope above links will help at least a bit.

Here are the UK freelance fees as per National Union of Journalists website (scroll down about halfway for newspaper pricing):
http://media.gn.apc.org/feesguide/photo.html
Obviously this is only a guide and does not apply to Canada, but it might give you a start point. Good luck.

Freelance fees really depend on each particular paper. Most papers will tell you right off the bat as to how much you'll get paid for a shot. It depends on where they are using the photo - which section of the paper, i.e. front, inside, above or below the fold, etc. Some papers just have a flat rate. I honestly wouldn't expect to much - papers are notorious for paying freelancers short money - this is coming from someone who was in the newspaper business for 5 years and continued dealing with the newspaper business in the form of being a PR consultant for an additional 8 years.

Gmen, Primoz and sageone, Thank you for your help...I am not willing to withhold the pictures anyway, given the outstanding women I was photographing today...Edna Staebler turned 100 years old and she is a literary giant in Canada, a pioneer...It would be a shame...but this is all good to know for the future...

at least ask for a photo credit - your name as the photographer

Oh that was never a question...I will certainly request that and the proper amount...but this day was about a wonderful lady and I was there covering it for the university newspaper, which I do for free...IN the end I certainly benefitted more by having a few people visit my website and get my name out there a little further...

Just remember that The Canadian Press is basically a syndication service. Your picture will be going out to member newspapers across Canada and, depending on the subject, might even be distributed worldwide.

Any update this ... I work for a newspaper that takes the Canadian Press service. Saw one picture of Edna Staebler this week, a shot from Jan. 15 credited to the Waterloo Regional Record. Pic shows Edna getting a birthday visit from Pierre Berton's widow and another author. Your shot?
cheers,
jim

Jim,
They decided to go with the Waterloo Regional Record's Photographer, even though he didn't have the shot the writer wanted...that is why I was asked in the first place...it was a chance but they have to gow with their people when they are there...oh well chances come and go...

Too bad ... I'm just laying out a page for our Friday Lifestyle section that features Edna ... the pictures I was given to use was the WRR shot and a couple of older file shots. The reason Canadian Press went with the Waterloo shot was likely that the Record is a "member" newspaper and provides it free.

$50 is what most of the papers I have been around offer for a single to almost any student at my Uni, this goes as high as AP Newswire and USA today...since you wernt working for a day rate they just like to screw the lower food chain over a little.
