so normally, with a 35mm SLR, a 16mm lense would cause the "fish eye" image distortion, but i was wondering, since the 10D has a sensor smaller than the normal 35mm frame it crops off the edges to where it's equivalent to 1.6 times the lense focal length, so would that eliminate(crop out) the "fish eye" distortion? or would it just not be as drastic?

a fish eye IS a fish eye! According to my Canon rep, the fish eye effect is a 180 degree (or close) field of view and even though you would get some cropping, you will still have distortion. If you are wanting to get the lowest wide angle without fisheye, canon and sigma both have one that will yield around 24mm wide angle with the 1.6 multiplier. canon's 14mm f2.8 USM is around $1500-$1700 and Sigma's 14mm f2.8 EX lens is around $600-$700. They are not cheap, but give a good wide angle if this is what you are looking for. If you do want fisheye, you will not get the full effect but you'll still have the distortion from what I've been told.

I think the Widest you can go for the least money value is the Sigma 15-30mm Zoom. It goes for about $450.00
That will give you an effective 24mm at the wide end. The 14mms will only get you 22.4
None of the above are Fish Eyes,.. there are wide lenses and Fish eyes, two different things.
