Anyone have recommendations for a small bag for this setup? I have a backpack but want something small and easy just for carrying out to the car on drives and such. Not something that needs to be seriously padded and such.

The DOmke F-5X is a great small bag for light travel. Easily fit XT and 17-85, plus room for one other smallish lens or flash or misc. stuff. Very lightly padded, which is what I really like.

I have the DOmke 5xb and it fits my XT wearing the 85 1.8, my 50 1.8 and my 420EX. also room for batteries and cf cards. kinda snug, but does the job.

Lowepro Stealth Reporter 200 can easily hold the XT and 17-85...I have it for my 20D and 17-85 and it accomodates a couple more lenses inside, too. And external attachment points make it easy to add Lowepro Lens Cases and accessory cases to the outside when you start adding even more stuff!

Lowepro Toploader Zoom 1 (http://www.lowepro.com/Products/Toploading/classic/Topload_Zoom_1.aspx) is what I use for the same scenario. You can put an extra battery, cards and a few other things in too. I use clips to attach it to the front straps of a backpack to keep it handy in front of me sometimes too. Oh yeah, it can be found fairly cheap.

I think this is what i'm going to do.
just curious, do you have a hood on your 17-85? Doest it cause any problems (I of course reverse it when going into storage)

I don't have the hood yet. There is about 2" left at the bottom but it could always be reversed if it didn't fit.

I have a Mekko brand backpack. If your looking at saving a few dollars over the Lowepro I think it's a great backpack. Holds everything I own.

I have a Tamrac Velocity 7 (model 5747)
http://www.tamrac.com/5747.htm
and a Rebel XT with 17-85 fits very well in the central section,
with the 50mm 1.4 in one lateral section and BG-E3 grip in the other one.
I have no lens hood, but I don't think it will fit if mounted on the 17-85.
