I sure do hope that norwegian magazine is wrong about the crop factor. None of the advantages of the 1.6 (longer zoom) yet still not full frame? ewww. At least the 1.6 crop factor has a definite advantage to having that crop.

OK, from DPR, a supposedly direct translation of the text of one of the pages on the Norwegian web site:
Why would there be a need to translate the Norwegian text? There's an English text directly below the Norwegian text. :)

I have read the article, being swedish I understand the language.
There's no confirmed news whatsoever so far except the date for a press conference. They are merely echoing rumors that have been around here for a while and they publish the same questioned images that we have seen before. It might be true, might be false. nothing in the article to indicate what as of yet. Pure speculatiuon that anyone here could do just as good.
I get the feeling they snapped these rumors from the web and publish prematurely. Especially the 1.3 crop thing makes me doubtful, no way I say. The 20D owners with EF-S lenses would think twice and again.
In a Swedish forum the main rumor is about built in IS in the house, I belive it when I see it.

It's pictured with an EF-S lens. There's lots of "probably" and "maybe" in the article, but the name and image are said to be confirmed by 2 independent sources. They are working on trying to get the specs. Phil Askey will be POed if somebody violates their NDA and he's scooped when he adheres to his. Perhaps Canon's planning a short press release today announcing the camera with minimal info.
Somewhere back in this thread, we saw what are possibly accurate specs. Maybe. Could be. Perhaps. :)

"the name and image are said to be confirmed by 2 independent sources"
I wonder if those sources might be these forums and DP-review?
They have howerver firmly stated that they got directly from Canon that there will be a new DSLR presented on the 21'st.
That's the big news of today so that we no longer only think, but know. They don't say firmly that it's a 20D successor but they guess it. It might still be the rumored 3000D budget camera they are talking about or something else.

It might be a good idea to talk to a couple of photographers from Norway, or at least some that know of this web site. It's reputed to be a reliable site by several people around the net. Doesn't mean that it is, of course, but there is some basis to investigate further before casting doubt.
that's the problem with the rumour mill - we never know when the real "leak" is going to show up.

Well........the photographs that has been leaked a few weeks back are now confirmed by Canon to be real.
Just for the record........it will be 1.6x crop as the photo has an EF-s lens attached.
Also, I doubt it will be more than 12 mpx.............so a safe bet would be 10.3 mpx.
I am almost positive that it will have a 2.5 inch LCD.
I am also betting that it will use a similar AF pattern to the 5D......... :-(
And..............SPOT METERING!!!

If you read the English version of what's on the Norwegian web site, you can easily see that what they are reporting on are rumors that they have heard. They're not specifically saying that the camera pictured is for real.

I would suggest that having IS built into the body might play havoc with the one built into their lenses - especally as they have only just launched the 24-105IS.
For that reason, I think that may be a non-starter.

The English translation may be a bit behind, since it is a Norweigen web site. Anyway, the quoted translation I reported earlier was from a Norweigen guy that presumably speaks the language fluently. Not sure about honestly, but I'm willing to bet 50 cents at this point that there is a new camera called the 35D that will be announced at a press conference by Canon on Feb 21st. :)
Note that I'm not betting my life's savings though - just half of it. :D

Given the number of different quoted specs, there's also good odds that two will quote the same thing. ;)Also quite true.At this stage, I'd suspect collusion if two people "independently" quoted the same specs across the board. From what we've seen so far, it'd take a sample of 10 ppeople to come up with specs that have 2 agreeing on any given detail.

And for the intensely interested I caught part of what appears to be an update on the Canon USA site about 3 minutes ago (1515 EST), Didn't see new camera, but did see what appeared to be a new page. Which I forgot to screen capture because it did not look like it had loaded properly. It stayed out for about 3 minutes. It was laid out differently enough to be obvious. It looked like they were getting an update ready for the site. Still don't know why they don't test on another computer and then upload the update like everyone else, but apparently they don't.
Back to normal though.

I have a source on the west coast that tells me we are in store for more than just a 20D upgrade or successor. His word is the 350D/XT will also be unveiled in upgrade form...350DMkII !!! He tells me all Canon lcd screen are going to 2.5 inches for cost savings, so the new xt will have that, plus have a precision center focus point and allow ISO3200! He goes on to say that there will be a price increase but still be offered under 1000.00 usd. My source, who I call Bob Smith, was very sure!

Wouldn't it be totally logical for the 20D update to use the same grip as the 5D? With all of the troubles they've had with the 20D grip, they surely will drop that model. IMO, it would be stupid of them to use anything but the 5D grip on the 35D (or 30D or whatever).
On the other hand, 1.3x crop factor would be totally illogical.

Call me cynical but I reckon it will have a new grip, Canon make more money if they have a unique grip for each DSLR model.

How many people will realistically own a 35D and a 5D. Using the same grip cuts out new design and tooling costs - therefore more profit...

The only way I could see them making more money would be in the case of a person who owned multiple non-1-series cameras who ended up buying a grip for each camera. How many people (percentage of all DSLR buyers) actually do that? Then, from that relatively small increase in sales you would have to subtract the overhead associated with manufacturing, packaging, inventorying, and distributing multiple grip models which would not be trivial.
The best way, IMO, for them to make more money would be to sell one high quality grip that could be used on multiple cameras. But who knows?

Will that be enough to tempt any but the 'latest and greatest' brigade to swop their 20d's. I fear not. Looks like I may be using my 10d for some time to come if those specs are right.
It's a bit of an anti-climax, unless they have made the sensor more sensitive with greater dynamic range. I would have liked spot metering too (surely not too hard to include).

Have a look at the grip for the EOS30 (the film one!), it is considerbally higher quality than the 20D's one, fits the camera much better, no issues with that at all (the grip for the EOS50 needed a small folded piece of paper as a spacer to make it work properly!)
In the month that I've had the grip, I've had one minor issue with it, which was quickly corrected, and didn't result in me losing any shot opportunities.
Comparing it to the grip for the EOS30 is pointless. I don't have an EOS30...

Just out of curiousity, why do we agonize over new great stuff? I just bought my 20D and sure enough, there are rumors there will be a replacement. So, if I ordered my 24-70L, which has been in my B&H cart for 2 weeks, there will most definitely be an annoucement of a lens that would be superior about a week later, maybe before the lens is delivered. :)
Should I wait or not?
Jon
9th of February 2006 (Thu), 13:30
No - go for it. They won't be replacing the 24-70 any time soon. And if you order from B&H today, you'll have it no later than Monday, probably even tomorrow if you don't dawdle any more so they can ship it out today.Seriously, 3-5 day UPS from them or Adorama gets to me next business day after they ship. Anything else Canon may come out with at PMA will be different from the existing L lineup.

I'm going to order it right now, as I am getting a little braver. I've been working like a dog to earn the money for it. I've been worried about the weight of it, thinking it is too heavy, but I actually like the camera being substantial. I hope with the hood and all, I don't look ridiculous. :)

LOL  You know, I purposely leave the hood on my 24-70, just so I won't look ridiculous. That lens is darn ulgly (IMHO) without the hood, especially when the barrel is extended out of the main body. ;)

I was just in my local Canon reseller (a serious pro shop) and conversation steered (by me) to the future of the 20D and pricing, given the rumours of an announcement in the coming weeks.
The salesman was an ex-Canon employee and had been asking around himself. Canon employees know absolutely nothing of an imminent announcement. There is no "embargo" on information.
The salesman says either there is nothing happening or it's been kept very, very secret.
He reckoned there might not be anything coming.... his theory on this: the 20D is an excellent machine. Canon won't make if Full Sensor beceause that defeats the purpose of the 5D. They won't increase FPS because that puts it up against the 1D MK II N. More MP? It's already got enough to satisfy most users.
There's 1000+ of them sitting in the Canon warehouse in Ireland. They are still flying off the shelves.
BTW, at least in Ireland, rebates stopped being accepted on Dec 31st at 16:00. That's probably old news to most. Some retailers manged to get the price dropped by unbundling a 2GB CF that Canon were throwing in.
And to cap it all off, I got myself a 50MM F/1.8 and a second hand 1.4 II Extender.

Suzy, I hope you're not going to be too disappointed when you discover that the lens you ordered from B&H is the 24-70 f/2.8 instead of the 25-70 f/2.8 lens (as listed on your sig).

I agree that 20D is still a perfect machine in its class. I am very satistied with it. But the marketing might not say the same as we do. Nikon has taken the lead with D200. I think there will be an announcement very soon. But with that limit set by 5D and 1dMkII, there is nothing 20D users would worry too much. Maybe it is a good chance for anyone still use D60 or 300D to reconsider their upgrading.
I miss the day when a camera model last 4-5 years on the market. I have read about Leica Digital M. The product manager said that they have a dificalty to maintain its price, new and used. I think it is true but sad, that the world turn into a marketing madness.
but ... we still can enjoy our dicisive moment of photogrphing.

Ok...this just in from Bob Smith out West...Canon will be announcing a new camera that not only supercedes the 20D, but matches the 5D, as well, much in the way the 350D compares to the 20D. It will have, according to my source, VPD-variable pixel density -ranging from 8 mp to 11 mp. It also comes with the larger lcd and a few other bells. He tells me it will be called the 35vpD!

The logical thing is they will come out with something. But it might be later in the year to catch the XMAS rush. Or they might be coming out with something that we have not even thought of. I would guess that they make more off of the point and shoots and they may concentrate on that.

The 20D is a kick ass machine and you cant go wrong with it, but seriously if you are in the market for one you cant go wrong waiting till PMA just to see what they DO announce. Maybe a replacement, maybe new glass, maybe nothing. Any way you slice it, its worth waiting on big purchases right now.

I second everything said about the 20D - I think it will take a long time before I outgrow this camera - if ever.
If I upgrade, it will be because I want a full frame ( when they cost less) or because my 20d is history for some ghastly reason!
FWIW, I don't believe the Ni*** D200 competes with the 20D - they are not in the same ballpark at all. I reckon it competes rather poorly with the 5d, though most reviewers seem to feel it handles better.

I'd heard that was a 24MP 1D/1Ds upgrade which gives the ability to shoot FF at slower rate or cropped frame at higher frame rate per sec. i.e. merging the capabilities of the 1D and the 1Ds, = high MPs v shooting rate, variable in the same camera

Actually, might hold off on it for a few months. The current 24-70 doesn't have IS. My inside source tells me a fast, wide zoom with IS. I'll make up some more details about it later.

Funny, an interview with a Canon rep around a year ago on Toms Hardware cited a 22MP 1D series and a "possibility":
Consumers generally don't care about really high megapixel counts. It's the commercial studio that need to do double page spreads or 11 inch by 7 inch prints at 300dpi. We don't think there will be a huge jump in megapixels, rather it will be incremental, like f-stops. The Canon 1DS Mark II is at 16 megapixels, our next camera might have 22 megapixels. On the compact point and shoot cams, each pixel is about 2 microns across, on the large frame cameras like the 1DS Mark II, the size is 6.4 microns or larger. Theoretically, if you didn't care about noise, digital SLR resolution could increase 6 to 8 times higher to about 100 megapixels, but you would have to deal with huge file sizes.
Reality is they probaably have developed the technology, just the market is not quite ready. I have seen a 12GB Hitachi Microdrive working sample, that hasn't made it into production due to the market not being ready yet.

Using the 1/1.8" sensor of the S80 and friends as a model, it'd be about 55x85 mm, or about the size of the classic 6x9 medium format. Well, if we're assuming the technology to build such a huge sensor, let's assume we can keep the noise at high ISO under control, too.

10th of February 2006 (Fri), 16:35
whoever is doing the math.
The smallest pixel size you can theoretically acheive is 700nm (red spectrum wavelength of light), the practical limit is about 2800nm and the optimum for SNR is 8000nm per pixel. All current Canon DSLR are between 6000nm and 10000nm in pixel density size.
That should give you some numbers to play with.

The word on most other forums is that Canon has stopped production of the 20D in anticipation of announcing it's replacement at PMA. Probably call it the 35D or something. Looks like it'll have a couple more MPs and a few bells and whistles.
It won't, BTW,be in response to Nikon's D200,it takes far too long to put a camera on the shelves from the time of the original design to be able to market something as an answer to a competitor's new camera.
But, everyone is right, years from now the 20D will still be great camera. When I do upgrade,I hope to be in position to keep mine along with the new one. Good luck.

I have heard the following from the Bob Atkins Web Site at
http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/digital/canon_eos_35D.html
The new 35D will probably look like this and will have the following specifications:
Sensor Format - 1.6x, 15mmx22.5mm, same as EOS 20D, smaller than EOS 5D, similar to Nikon D200

That grip doesn't even fit properly !!
It looks like someone has PS'd a 350D grip (BG-E2 ?) onto a 20D and changed the 20 to 35.
Frankly, it looks poo.
Saying that, everytime I've seen one of these "pre-release" pictures of a new model they NEVER show it with the grip on. 10D, 20D, 5D. All body only.
Why would they change now ? Especially when it looks that bad.
I guess we'll just have to wait. Sigh.....
I'm not really concerned, my next body will be a 5D (more likley, it's replacement :-()
To be honest, I'm FAR more interested in what new lenses Canon brings out.
85 f1.2L Mk II or 50 f1.2L anyone ? (Sorry Jon :-))
Gary.

That would be nice, the lens, I mean. I can't afford any of this new stuff, but it's so fun to read all you guys predictions. I just want something great that won't kill my budget. :)
