Yeah somewhere there is a Canon marketing exec all pleased with themself after they came up with the idea of starting to do press releases as blurry photos with obvious PS artifacts. We all spend our time saying "Hey dumbass its a PS job" and then it turns out the 1701D (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=138610) actually IS the new camera.

SWAT everyone said last time yet blow me down with a feather if twernt true!

Thanks roanjohn. And on another note, the RAW plug-in I just downloaded, which includes the 5D and MarkIIN, isn't backward compatible to Photoshop versions before CS2. I have CS. So if I want to shoot RAW and use photoshop to process those cameras' images, I'll have to upgrade!

Welcome to the world of proprietary software. One of the reasons why I dislike proprietary software, and refuse to use it.

Yes, can someone shed some light on this. When Should we be looking for official information. I can assume that the press release will be issued, followed by an official site update, followed by the dpreview release or something like that.

Does the flurry start at 8am EST? That's 10pm my time. How fast does this go? Should I be expecting to get all the info that night or should I relax and wait until the next day?

I know I should relax generally but that's not gonna happen.

Why would Canon deliberately reduce their customer base by marketing a creature that killed its purchaser with one stare?

I just don't understand why so many of you are in such a hurry to pay full list price for the first items to roll off the assembly line, with how much reliability testing that was completed before the release date?

Call me cynical, but if in fact there are new models being released, I've seen too many of these things rushed to the showroom with inadequate shakedown. The vendors just LOVE impatient folks with deep pockets. I can patiently wait and let others grab up the buggy models. What I have right now, still works right now, does the job right now, and won't add anything to my credit card bills.

Why would Canon deliberately reduce their customer base by marketing a creature that killed its purchaser with one stare?
(...unless they're introducing a new Russian stringed instrument?).

basilica |b??s?l?k?| |-?z?l-| noun a large oblong hall or building with double colonnades and a semicircular apse, used in ancient Rome as a court of law or for public assemblies. • a similar building used as a Christian church. • the name given to certain churches granted special privileges by the pope. DERIVATIVES basilican adjective ORIGIN mid 16th cent.: from Latin, literally ‘royal palace,’ from Greek basilik?, feminine of basilikos ‘royal,’ from basileus ‘king.’

It is a well known fact tthat all balalaikas manufactured after 1952 had secret camera inastalled, and manmy manufactured before that were updated with them latterly. There is no reason why canon could not upgrade these toady - quite a lucrative market I weould have thought!

EDIT: sorry I thought I was dreaming a nightmare, where Canon had only knocked out a 30D with 10MP, and also some daft overpriced eye controlled monstrosity called a 3D ( of all things! - nothing to do with 3D!). Nothing to lower the price of the 5D!

Just out of curiousity, why can't one of us POTN members get down there for this conference? Isn't there a person in Orlando who we can get into that "special event"? Isn't there some way we can "spy" the place? I can't believe one of us doesn't have what it takes to get to where the action is. I'm quoting myself, how pathetic. :)

The pinch of salt thing

Meaning
Accept a truth but with reservations.
Origin
The idea comes from the fact that food is more easily swallowed if taken with a small amount of salt. Pliny the elder translated an ancient antidote for poison with the words 'be taken fasting, plus a grain of salt'. The phrase has only been in use since the 17th century though.

Does it work as the name suggests, e.g the focus follows your eye, or is it a marketing thing. Man I tell you, the only thing I hate about DSLRs is focusing. Hope the eye thing can solve that.

aam1234
20th of February 2006 (Mon), 14:19
The focus points. I only saw those with DSLRs. The EOS 620 (the first EOS ever) doesn't use that, and focusing wasn't even a thing people talking about, it was seamless.

Does it work as the name suggests, e.g the focus follows your eye, or is it a marketing thing. Man I tell you, the only thing I hate about DSLRs is focusing. Hope the eye thing can solve that.

From my own use it worked as the name suggests. Focus point selection was done just by looking at the desired focus point. You did need to spend a couple of minutes intially training the camera but after that it was 99% accurate. It completely did away with manual focus point selection, or ever having to focus and reframe. It pretty much becomes a subconsious issue unless you are doing something odd. And of course it shows you the selected points so you can always see it got it correct.

As with anything though, some people had issues with it. Apparently it was never too happy working with glasses and such.

Someone may be able to confirm but I seem to remember on the elan 2 they actually had eye control also able to do things like trigger depth of field preview by looking at a certain area of the view finder.

I've got eye contronl on an 11 year old Canon camcorder. It worked pretty well after you "trained" the camera, as Citizen nicely explains. In my machine you actually have the option of programming the control for yourself as well as one "guest user." You would just toggle between the two.

I suspect this grew out of the eye control R&D done in the '60's for military weapons systems. Gun/eye control was used either on the Huey's - gunner firing out of the side of the chopper - or on Puff the Magic Dragon for controlling the mini-gatling guns. Either way it was used as a lethal targetting system.

SK, I don't get why you are so resistant to the idea. Each model that featured it had an indentical version that lacked eye control and was cheaper.

If you wanted its bountiful goodness it was there for you at a small premium. If you were fine with the barren wasteland of the more lacking model you could save yourself $40. Its not like they were forcing the issue. No assimilation was occuring. :)

A dragon with gatling guns? The fire breath isn't enough? Or could you perhaps be using a nickname I'm unaware of. :)

I dunno though, a dragon with gatlings would be pretty damn cool.

As an aside, another place it showed up was on a couple of Sun Microstations. They had a small transmitter sitting above your monitor and (if you kept your head well positioned) you could do stuff by looking at the item on the screen. Want to scroll, look at the scroll bar. Stare at a menu item and it would open out. They disappeared pretty fast so I guess it didn't work too well. Make you wonder what would happen if you were looking at porn with an eye control computer. :)

I wear glasses as well but the Eye-Controlled focus (on the Elan 7e) worked great for me. It even worked with sunglasses. It's a feature that some people liked and some didn't. I loved it and it is a feature I am hoping to see soon on a DSLR. The multi-point focusing on the 20D seems to have a mind of it own and usually focuses in the wrong place (this is my opinion, of course). I have to keep it on center-point focus and I this this is the weakest feature of the 20D. I don't want to have to select a focus point using my fingers, I prefer to just look where I want it to focus and have it work. It becomes second nature to use it.

The eye control from a camera is slightly different from "eye control" on an AH-64's gunner helmet. He turns his whole head while the camera looks at your pupil. =)

Why am I resistant to the idea? just that I enjoy the more contemplative aspect of photography, I like manual cameras lenses that have aperture adjustment on the outside.
I'd probably love it once I got used to it, but I still havent fully grokked the 20D or 5D and now here's yet more to learn, I just suspect there's a danger of succumbing increasingly to gimmicry to the detriment of creativity.

Iv'e never seen a Gatt, never mind gatlings.....

It becomes second nature to use it.

bring back the slit screen prism - and manual focus!

I wonder if there would be a market for that kind of thing. The P&S cameras they make come pretty damn small. So how about getting the guts of an A series and then building it into a really old Canon body. Probably never get beyond curiosity value but it would be exceedingly cool.

Almost as cool as an eye control mini-gatling (bijou gatlette?) strapped to a dragon.

I dont know If posted this here before, and I dont want to blow any bubbles. But i really doubt Canon is going to have a Press Release the 21st at 20:30 in Spain as stated before by some people here and in other forums. Im not saying the're not going to release anything tomorrow, or uhmm today. But I am not confident about the information that surfaced in the www.canon.es website. The press conference is supouse to be held in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, I a restaurant in the museum managed by Sergi Arola a pretty know Chef in Spain. I called and emailed the restaurant, (it's called Arola) to ask for some reservations during the day at a time pretty close to the one stated for the press conf. and they said they are and were going to be close during that time. Thus this can be either good or bad. I asked for a reservation for 30 people and they replied that they only have room for 30 at the most in that rest, so this is in my opinion not a good place for a press-conference as the can only accommodate 30 people.

Dont know, I hope what I'm saying here is also a fake. That way I can see some new products tomorrow. Your comments on this will be appreciated.

Sorry if I misspelled something, English is not my first language.

Still 1.6. I guess the biggest improvement is the larger LCD, ISO in viewfinder and larger buffer. However, a dissapointment.

The only surprise I got was that they didn't increase the pixel count. Then again, the 20D's IQ is already excellent, and raising the mpx would perhaps only result in more noise at 800 ISO and up.

I expected the 5D's AF system as well, but two publications give two different versions of whether the 6 additional focus points exist on the 30D or not. Time will tell....
