Wow, I am truly surprised. I can't decide if it's worth it to get my money back from Costco. I'd have to void my rebate and all. Only a few improvements, but the LCD was predicted. I'm more interested in the 17-55 L lens. Twice as expensive as the 17-40L, but at f2.8, that's a great improvement.

the lenses are interesting, the new 85 is pretty pricey though.

im not too thrilled by the 30d, so I think I will go ahead and get my 20d as planned. a few more MPs and faster fps and I'd go for it, but I think I'll be just as happy with the 20d. Off to B&H then! :D

The 30D is a bit of a let-down for me. When it comes down to it, we're really talking a bigger screen and longer shutter life. Here's to hoping that there's a more advanced camera somewhere in the near future.

Too nmuch wishful thinking going on around here. Everyone has spent the last 4 months since the rumours started saying how great thr 20D was and now everyone moans that the 30D isn;t the stp forward they were expecting !!!! Arrgghhhh! If you have a 300D and want to upgrade, get a 30D or save some money and get a 20D, seems like a fair choice to me!

WOW, all that anticipation and Canon let us fall flat on our face, so far. Although the two lenses are nice their prices are rediculous. Hopefully that is some kind of MSRP and the true retail will be much less. And the camera...whooooopppppppiiiiiiiiieeeeeee!!! What a bunch of crap. The ISO is only in the viewfinder during changes, not all the time. It does have spot metering and, wait for it...a new, bigger LCD! D200 killer? I think not. Hopefully they haven't put all their eggs in one basket and bring out even more.

This upgrade probably disapoints a lot of people, but it's logical.
20D IQ (and 350D IQ) is still superior to the D200 so you dont need to upgrade - the D200 was dead on arrival.

I am a 300D user so the arrival of the 30D at a decent price is a good thing. It would be a significant upgrade and so I'm happy with that camera.

Lenses though. Sure the 85 mk2 was needed but its way out my price range. I'll stick with the f/1.8 version. The 17-55 is interesting but I have a 17-40 I'm really happy with.

What I was really hoping for was the 40/50/55 f/1.2 L that made its way into several rumours. That is something I could have really gone for. Ah well. No big deal. 6 months and everyone will be latching on to the next show.

So now we know what the 30D actually looks like who is going to go back and figure out which rumours where photoshop hoaxes and which were actually real.

rather disapointing - as far as I can see, not much has come out of the 30D really. I know that the 20D doesn't need to be improved upon, but as far as I can see, the 30D just adds about 5 new features and a slight body re-design. You could practically modify a 20D to do what the 30D does (well, obviously not the bigger screen). The problem is, for a complete DSLR newbie buying a camera and presented with the brand new D200 with 10Mpixels vs the brand new 30D with 8Mpixels, I know that the 10Mipix. will be chosen.

Consumers like numbers. If one camera has a number bigger than the other (obviously the numbers like D200 and 30D don't count, but the numbers like Mpix.) then they will choose the bigger number camera if its a similar price.

Hey, at least this means I might have a chance at getting a 20D instead of a 350D now that the 20D will fall in price :D

From using a 20D for work, I wans't very happy with it becasue of the buggers inside. I hope when I test ride the 30d it won't have bugs whil I try it in the store, but as soon as I use it for a paying job, down it goes lol.

Beyond mystique it is probably reasonably apparent that most people go Canon. You see the Canon brand everywhere. For those seeking a camera who value indivduality there may be a perception of Nikon as a brand that gives you more individuality. OK thats complete crap, there are millions of Nikon users, but the "I'm unique, me and the other 10,000,000 people with a Japanese symbol tattoed on their lower back" kind of mentality seems to go a long way.

I think Canon is a well recognised consumer brad, but ask most people to name a high-end camera make, they would probably say Nikno ahead of Canon. I have no data to back this up, just a hunch! Besides, Nikon seems to be better at 'subliminal' advertising, ie its use in TV/film etc.

oooh -- the second thought was is that i've seen yesterday a show on E! about red carpet photographers, and the main hero (some old lady - the photographer) was shooting with n8787878n... and there were some ppl with 300D and 18-55, there was some ppl with a gold stripe lens, didn't see too many L's.. although i've seen brackets... is it such a useful thingy?

For myself, I'm migrating down from excellent optics used with medium format film - so MP count is an issue to consider for me. I'm already accustomed to a bright FF viewfinder with a 6x6 cm neg and need that the total wide angle view for wedding groups. But I can certainly see why others benefit from and prefer the crop factor for their shooting circumstances.
