I want to join a site to host my pics, so that I can direct people (family, friends, clients etc) to my site and have them access certain albums

Will www.pbase.com or www.smugmug.com do what I'm looking for

other site recommendations ?

thanks in advance !!

Yahoo's Flickr service seems to be used by a lot of people here. I have just joined and it is very intuitive to use and designed for both public and private photo sharing. http://www.flickr.com/

I don't know the others.

Check out
http://www.flickr.com
and also
http://www.bytephoto.com

flickr is really good it's free, allows 20mg upload per month, plus you can create slide shows and albums. bytephoto has both a paid and free site. The free site is pretty good. I would certainlly look into flickr.

Personally i like smugmug better, both of them will do what you want but with smugmug you get unlimited space, bandwidth and their servers are fast. The downside is that their not a free service.

Also:

http://www.fotki.com

They also have free or paid sites. Public and private albums.

I'm guessing pretty much any of these will serve your purpose.

Flickr is both free and paid. The free membership is limited to 250 images. You must also link back to your photos if posting them externally. To do otherwise is against the terms of use and will result in account termination. The paid Flickr membership is cheap, considering they allow you to post 2GB monthly. The interface is very user-friendly, too. Make sure you set the privacy controls, though, or they'll blog the crap out of your pictures without your permission. Most of the people using that site are amateurs who don't understand the concept of copyright.

My biggest question with regard to all of the above-mentioned services, is whether or not they allow direct linking, such that a photo hosted by them can be posted via direct link to a thread here, or another site.

Fotki *does* allow for direct linking. At least with a paid account. Not sure about the freebie.

Not sure whats meant by that either, I've used both flickr, and free and paid bytephoto. What I do is click on my photo click on properties, highlight the web address, copy it and paste in the http script prompt (insert image) here and my photo is posted.

I have a Pro account with Flickr and like it so far. My photostream is in my sig down below.

I went to a meeting tonight of the Silicon Valley Macintosh User Group and a new photo sharing site is in the works and we got to see a preview of it tonight: Zooomr (http://www.zooomr.com). You won't be able to see much yet, that's how new it is.
It will be similar to Flickr, but there is a feature that allows you to attach audio to your pictures.

The Flickr service makes it possible to post images hosted on Flickr to outside websites. This use is accepted (and even encouraged!). However, pages on other websites which display images hosted on flickr.com must provide a link back to Flickr from each photo to its photo page on Flickr.

This is an excerpt from the Flickr Terms of Use, explaining my earlier post. It can be found here:

Thanks, Liza.
Generally you can right click on any image on the web and in the properties box it gives a path to where it's hosted. Perhaps there are ways to mask that to hide the location, and flickr doesn't want the location hidden.

Curtis,

Go to a recent thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=129392) I posted. Click on one of the pictures.
I'm currently going through the threads that I've posted pictures (thankfully not very many) to do that.

This site tells you how to do it: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/misc.php?do=bbcode. Scroll down about 2/3 to "Images". The example of coding is the second set under "Example Usage".

Thanks, Wsman2!
I just bookmarked that thread for reference.
The fog is starting to clear now. :D
