Can anyone help here because Canon are lacking in their advise!

I had an A400 which was given as a Xmas present but stolen. We replaced with an A410. When I installed the software disc it replaced v19 of the software with v25. (The A400 worked fine on the PC).

Now, when I connect the camera, Camera Window will not auto-launch and Zoom Browser doesn't recognise the camera at all. The only way to download pictures is with the standard Windows XP software which I don't like.

I have gone back to the previous software and this is better in that camera window launches, but it's not the up to date version and some features are not there (different cameras, different features I guess).

I'm running Windows XP with SP2 and am very frustrated!!!

Wellcome to the forum, sharpsa. Have you uninstalled the previous version of software(A400), or you installed one upon another? There may sill be some components related to the A400.

Yeah, I've tried that one!

I've done the following (with the following results):

1st install was to insert Cd and it aotuomatically replaced and upgraded existing software - result - didn't work.

2nd - removed all existing Canon software and clean install - result - didn't work.

3rd removed all existing Canon software and installed previous version - result didn't work.

4th - unplugged webcam - result, previous software recognises camera and can download using camera window and Zoom Browser.

5th - installed new software (as step 1) - result - didn't work.

6th - clean install of new software - result - didn't work

So, I was thinking that perhaps the webcam was conflicting with the camera. Which it was, when using the previous version software. Incidentally, when I had the A400, this worked no problems with the webcam attached!!! It's only since upgrading to the A410 that the problems have started.

Hopefully this gives some more background info. Anything to try will be much appreciated.

Sharpsa, I had a similar problem that drove me nuts with my A610. I tried everything, even uninstalling and re-installing the software three times, each time hoping that the window I originally had would become my default downloading program again when I went to download pictures, but it never did.

Anyway, my problem started when I clicked on the "Acquire and Camera Settings" button in the Zoombrowser software. After that, the computer would only let me download my pictures to Zoombrowser and no other program...because Zoombrowser had automatically become my default when I did this. I tried everything to no avail to get back to the other program. I finally called Canon support and the guy walked me through all kinds of options, trying to get me back to this mysterious default program that had popped up when I first started using the A610. After about 15 minutes (this guy had wonderful patience) he realized that the default that had come on when I first used my camera couldn't have been from any Canon software. As it turned out, the program I had used, the one that I couldn't find again, was a Microsoft program called the "Scanner and Camera Wizard".

To get back to it, he had me do the following:
Make sure the camera is on and connected with the cable.
Close out any windows you have open.
Go to Start...settings...control panel....scanner and camera.
Right click on the camera itsef....properties....Choose "Events".
Select the first option, the one with the drop-down menu.
Select "scanner and camera wizard"....Apply...OK. Then close out. Turn the camera off & then back on.

Anyway, that got me back to the elusive "Scanner and Camera Wizard" that I was looking for. Hope that helps.

This will fix it:

Click Start and then Run. In the box type SERVICES.MSC and press Enter. Canon Camera Access Library should be Started and set to Automatic.

Right click on Canon Camera Access Library service and choose Properties. Click on the Dependencies tab you will see that the service is depending on two services of the operating system - SSDP Discovery Service and WIA. If any of these two are disabled, Canon service won't start and you won't be able to download your pics. Make sure the services are set to Automatic.

As a Canon user and former computer tech with an independant computer builder, I find that the best thing to do is to use a "card reader" to upload your images to your "HD" (hard drive) rather than hooking up your camera to the computer directly. Also, you should always let the body "reformat" the card rather than the computer.

Also before you load software on your computer, always "lose" the taskbar icons, load the software and immediately reboot the computer.
