Hi, Everyone, any experience with the Canon 28-200 f3.5-f5.6 USM lens for Portrait work on a D30? Is it too slow?

It's range would certainly qualify for portraiture.
I use a 28-70 2.8 myself.
Not sure about speed? that would depend on the aperture you want to work at. In the studio I shoot at F9.5 - 11, Outdoors I shoot at usually F4...
(5.6 would work, but you might need a tripod or ISO 200+) for ambient light stuff.

I just broke down and purchased the Canon 70-200 2.8L. I shoot round f11-16 9 to Max DoF), bought the fast lens primarily to assist in auto focus. Ken

you'll like the 28-70.
I find it is flexible enough for full length framing as well as head and shoulder compositions.
I like a little lower dof, so as to make the subject stand out more from the background.
