Which was your first Canon digital SLR camera? Please take this poll. If you care to talk about which was your first DSLR camera and if it was good, bad or whatever? That would be ok too.

(Unlike my last poll that asked which is your favorite EOS of all time (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=95079), I believe this one to be complete with all the digital SLR cameras from Canon.)

I came from a Canon film SLR background, so after some frustrating experiences with a couple of point and shoots I bit the bullet and purchased a 20D. Best thing I ever did for myself. I feel that the freedom of digital has allowed me to grow and develop much more rapidly than when I used film.

I used to have an Elan 7e .. which had a lot of similarities to the 20D ... you'll have to pry these wonderful USM & L lenses outa my cold dead hands ... lol

Im waiting for someone to cast a honest vote for those ancient EOS cameras. Some how I doubt very few people had them or even know about them.

I believe the DCS 3 original price was an "affordable" $23,000! eGads that's worth more then my Cars original price! If that's not bad enough? The DCS 1's original price was $31,000 US Dollars! Amazing! I wonder who would use such a camera?

300d for me. I love this little guy. The main concerns I have are the write speed, buffer, and small viewfinder. Other than that I couldn't be happier. The build quality doesn't bother me too much. With the 'hack' I get mirror lockup which is very useful. I could see the 20d replacement being a possible upgrade. Less noise at higher ISO would be nice as well.

It was my first ever Canon. Got it from a NYC member here, April 2005.

Mine was the 300D. Waited 'till the price dropped enough.... then "blew" way more than any saving on glass. Waiting to see what if any AF improvements are in any 20D replacement (my only real cause for complaint with the 300D) then will decide on that vs 20D vs no upgrade at all.

My first digital camera was the PowerShot G3, and my first digital EOS was the 10D.

The 10D was a great camera, I loved it - the quality of the camera itself and the pictures I could take with it were outstanding.

Now I have my second digital EOS, the 5D. I've had it since the end of October already, but I actually haven't used it a lot yet. Next month I'm going on holiday (to Laos and Cambodia), so I'm sure I'm going to let the 5D shine there... :)

My very first digital camera was six years ago - a Sony Mavica that was built like a brick, used 3.5" floppies as storage and had a MASSIVE 1/4 million pixels :D

I then upgraded to the Fuji 602z - a nice camera actually. 3Mp.

Then recently, the Canon 350D/XT - I'm now on the EF slippery slope, but loving it.

So, I normally upgrade every two years, it'll be interesting to see what affordable technology is around two years from now. 30Mp? 20FPS?

My first digicam was a Canon Powershot S400 followed less than a week later by my DRebel, both bought whilst on holiday in USA in Jun 04. Before that I was a confirmed EOS film man! At the time both were less than 2/3 the price in UK! Going to US in Jun this year too.... 30D??

My first digital SLR was the 300D, though that was replaced by a 10D less than 6 months later - still really happy with the 10D, though wouldn't mind the improvements that the 20D give :)

I bought one of the first Kodak digital cameras with telephoto lenses that are so small and adorable, they felt like toys. But the quality of the pictures was very good. I used that camera until the 10D came out and my son in college uses it still. It's a great little camera.

After Canon announced the 10D, I knew I had to have it because I already had Canon EOS equipment. I've been collecting lenses, flashes and other great stuff since. :)

10D was the the Camera that broke the price barrier for me.
I longed for the D30 when it came out.. likewise the D60... but the 10D @ $1,500.00 was a done deal.. (as soon as I could actually find one.. which was at the time quite difficult.)

10D =>
Added 1D => replaced with 1D MkII
Sold 10D => replaced with 20D

Tried a D30 for IR but sold it and have a D60 converted to IR only.

My very first digital was a no name vga res camera with about 8k memory - lasted about 1 week. Then onto an Olympus D30 2MP P&S which was replaced by a Lumicron LDC521Z3 5MP camera. I got my first DSLR july 05 - 350D and I like it a lot. I still have fond memories of my first film SLR - an old Zenith 35mm with AE and led indication for correct exposure.

Yep expensive puppies for 1mp cameras but worth it for professional journalists at the time since for the first time they could wire photos from anywhere around the world for breaking news stories.

I had a friend who came across one in a pawn shop, the Nikon mount Kodak, they wanted $100:D .

1982 second AE1 body
2001 Canon Elan 7E

2002 D60

2005 5D

I still have the Elan 7e, the D60, 20D and 5D, gave the rest away.

I bought my first Canon EOS Digital Rebel in January 2005. I was blown away by the quality of the pictures. Then I got the XT in August and finally the 20D in November. I got a great price on the 20D and couldn't pass it up. I figured $835 after rebates, coupons, and cashback was a good price.

My first digital SLR was the Canon 300D. This is my favorite camera thus far. This is my third Canon SLR type camera. My first SLR was the Canon AE-1 Program, then I moved to the Canon Rebel 2000 which I still have.

My first digital camera was a Sony Mavica, the I moved to the Sony S50 2.1MP camera. It shot very nice pictures. Then moved on to the the Olympus C-750 which I still use when I don't want to carry the DSLR with me. All in all I spent to much money in the process. Sometime in the near future the 20D or it's replacement will be in my bag.

First DSLR...the 300DRebel. Bought in USA 2 years ago. Still using it...love it even more now. First Digital Camera little Fuji Finepix 4700Z. Still going strong (hubby bagged it)

When I do get my next one, will still keep Reb as 2nd camera. It has been a great teacher. And, due to service it has given, will be sticking to Canon.

Well I had seen the DCS-3 back when, but not in my budget ir something I though worth bothering with. My first digital camera was a Kodak web cam DVC-300? followed by Kodak DC4800 which at 3.1MP was very good at the time (and best of all short shutter delay).
I am not sure if I might have gone for the D30 had I been aware of it, but I jumped at the D60 when I found out about it. since then 10D then 1DsMkII.

I bought the web cam as a novelty, but folks kept asking me to take pictures with it (nothing like 20 foot of USB cable). So I got the DC4800, liked it, but didn't like the fixed lens limitations. Then I read about D60 and had one ordered the next week. And I moved towards maybe doing professionally I decided I needed a back-up so got the 10D when it came out. But still I could not do what I wanted to do with the camera, which is why I have a 1DsMkII as my primary now. What I am looking for now is faster frames per second with at least the same capabilities as 1DsMkII (sensor, AF, 35mm FF, and many more). So I am saving up for the next camera. I am happy with the sensor overall, but would like a touch more dynamic range and again definately need more FPS, but without losing sensor abilities.

At this point it is all about minimizing the limitations of the camera within my budget.

Well, the 300D was my first Canon DSLR, my first DSLR was a Minolta RD-175, and my second (well, almost tied with my first, they were bought within 2 months of each other) was a Kodak DCS-420.

Love my 5D tho :)

My first SLR was a Chinon CE-4 which did great for many years while I was a student, then I upgraded to a Canon Eos 100 ( Elan) when I could afford a new camera, after doing a lot of research. Interestingly at the time the real choice was between the Minolta dynax system and the Canon eos system - for some reason I never even considered Nikon...
I resisted digital for years, till finally could hold off no longer - I saw the great pics my friends were gettting just with little P&S compacts in places I was nervous to take my SLR - bars, parties etc - and got a compact digital myself.
Even this little compact totally blew my mind - I couldn't get over the quality of the images and the immediacy of the result. And being able to fire off 200 pictures without worrying what it would cost...
So I very quickly upgraded to a 20D - after using Eos all this time there was no way I was tempted by the dark side, and I chose the 20d because it felt as solid and purposeful as my old film camera does.I am slowly getting to grips with all it has to offer, but it will be a while before I know it as well as my Eos 100.
Digital has lit a big fire in my belly, and I am enjoying photography as never before. The advice and help from this forum is great too.

My first Canon (Dec 2005) is a 20D. So far I am pleased with it. Seems to have a focus learning curve for me. I have had Nikon's, Blads, even a Sony 707. I like the feel and have taken about 1500 photos. Would recommend it to anyone who wants more than point and shoot. Use RAW and work (PS) for the best results. It can't be beat.

Hi

First digital camera was a Sony DSCF505V. That died after 13 months and the camera dealer quoted almost its new cost to repair it (Sony later repaired it for about £70). The horrible shutter lag (and the frozen image on the screen at that moment) meant it got replaced with a Canon A10 (nowhere near as good a camera, but works well still).

Bought a Canon D30 2nd hand when the 10D came out. Used that for 2 years and bought a 20D early last year.

All the best

My first DSLR was/is the D60 (was sounds so bad since it's past tense, and I still have the camera lol!!!). I'm quite surprised that it hasn't had many votes, it appears that the majority of people got into Digital SLRs with the 300D, which makes sense since it was very competitively priced.

My camera history:

Zenit 12XP (cheap, nasty, but built like the proverbial - given to my father)
eos 630 (I've given it to the girl here where I live, but can borrow it at any time)
Lubiltel 166U TLR (cheap, nasty but is fun!)
eos1n (still have this one, you can pry it from my cold, dead hands)
Vivitar 3640 (only used a few times, pile of ****)
D60

The Vivitar is the only compact I've ever owned, and after my experience with it, you won't catch me buying another one. Build quality was ****e, got about a dozen shots per set of AA Alkaline batteries. Image quality, for a 2mp camera wasn't too bad, they didn't use too high a jpeg compression ratio surprisingly. Tried firing it up a few days ago out of curiousity and the LCD screen is dead and the unit doesn't respond at all, even though it's powered up. Junk.

Dave

PS I only bought the Vivitar cos I was strapped for cash very badly at the time, it was half price, and I wanted to take some shots of my girl rats (including some treasured movies that are irreplaceable).

My first SLR was a Canon A-1, bought somewhere around the late 1970's. When I started having electrical issues with it, I moved to my first digital P&S - a Nikon Coolpix 880. A year ago this month, I convinced my better half that I had move to a 20D or life wasn't worth living. :D No regrets so far!

I had been shooting happily with an A80 but somewhere inside I knew I was ready to make the jump. I had never used a SLR camera before but the kind of control I was longing for, I knew I could get with that. While I was getting ready to pick the 20D, I found this site and I soaked up the information like a sponge. Then my hubby really pushed and went ahead and ordered it for me, The day it came, I was scrapbooking witha friend and everything came to a halt as we drooled over the box and 2 lenses we bought with it. I haven't had a day of regret since.

My first dslr was the 10D, my first digial experience was a Noink coolpix 995.
Film wise i used an EOS 30 and thus hated the noink because of the seriously nasty shutter lag, and sold it soon after.
Tried a D30, shutter lag still there compared to my EOS30 - and the price! Ouch! So I didn't buy
Same with the D60 on price.
Handled a 10D and was pleased they had resoplved the lag to bring it in line with my film EOS. Much to the displeasure of my wallet I bought one, and while I was at it a 100-400L.

Mine was the Rebel XT which I took back after a week because I wasn't too thrilled with its size for a SLR. Later I bought a used 10D for half the price of the XT and wow am I ever impressed with it.

I would probably have kept the XT if it was the size of the 300D but its sort of small for my mamoth hands to hold with a lens. I'm happy with the 10D and plan on using it for many years to come.

I'm waiting for someone to cast a vote on that 1ds MkII. :-) Mmmm, what a cam to learn on.

Learning digital on a 1Ds MKII :)

I was telling a friend that I had to go thru a learning curve when I went from print film to slide film... I likened the switch to digital to similar to what it might be like to move from color to black and white. The digital format is not so forgiving on exposure as color print film is. Even slide film seems to be more forgiving. That said, I'm having a blast... After 38 years of shooting black and white, color print, and color slide film I can honestly say that I am having the most fun with my EOS1Ds MKII.

I'm getting distraught over people referring to finding a webpage as "stumbling" upon it. What does that mean? How uncoordinated do you have to be to stumble while sitting at a computer?

I'm trying to figure out how so many people learned how to master the skills needed to catch a wave - 'cause they all say they are "surfing the Web"

Have Fun,

About as I suspected, the 20D is the prosumer camera of choice so far...

I'm happier with it now every day. The more you learn about cameras in general and how it all works makes improvement pretty steady.

I keep getting more good shots than not.

Considered a 5D but decided to keep the 20D. Now I'd say I'd go the 1 series next IF I decide to move up.

Although I am not new, this is the first time I saw the poll. Thanks for the bump.

Back in the day (when I was a kid and first interested in photography), I had a Canon Snappy 20 and then a Canon T80.

Sometime between Jr High and High School, I lost interest in photography, and my Dad ended up selling the T80 (also went through some rough financial times), and resorted to crappy p&s film cameras.

Once I felt that digital got up to par, I rekindled my interest in photography with a Canon G5, and quickly realized:
1. The G5 did not do as much as I would like it to do.
2. I wasn't spending enough money yet.

So, I bought a Canon 20D. Very shortly, I came to the following conclusions:
1. There's nothing that I cannot do with this camera (yet). Its capabilities still far exceed my skill level behind the lens. I am still blown away by some of the photos I have taken with this camera.
2. I still wasn't spending enough money - the L lenses have started to call my name.

I hadn't taken it either. I came from 1000FNS and 7E in the film world and A10, A20, A40, A70, G1, S50, S70, and S1 IS powershots in the digital world. Currently on a 300D but will be moving soon. Just trying to decide on 5D or 30D and some more glass.

My very first digital camera was six years ago - a Sony Mavica that was built like a brick, used 3.5" floppies as storage and had a MASSIVE 1/4 million pixels :D

I used to have one of them! Followed by a Kodak something. I had an EOS500N for a long time after that, now just replaced it with an EOS400D - still an amateur though, looking to learn from this forum.

I purchased it brand new, just after it was released. I had been struggling with the idea of going digital for a while (very hesitant to give up film). When the 1Ds was announced I contacted Canon for a demo but I was far back on the list at that point so I did some more research and then dove in. I wasn't shooting a lot of 35mm at that point, mostly medium and large format, so I could afford to wait until an SLR like the 1Ds came out.

My first digital was (is) my 2 300D bodies .. still love um .. been about 6 months now .. since I came over from film ..
Shall we go back in time? Okie ..

72 Yashica 35mm
75 Rolleflex 2 1/4
76 Pentax 35mm (had 3 of them)
76 Lieca Flex .. (lenses were too sharp .. sold it) :p
77 Nikon .. went thru 4 bodies
78 Pentax 6x7
82 kept the 7 6x7 bodies up until recently, bought 2 Nikon f-3 bodies.
Since then .. I sold the Nikons .. kept all 7 bodies and 6 lenses for the 6x7 system.
Last month .. I sold all the 6x7 bodies .. and 6 lenses .. after purchasing my 2 300D's

Welp .. thats the history .. and I love my 300D's .. I'll shoot with um til they die .. ;)

I learned photography using primarily Nikon film SLR cameras. Throughout my entire college career I worked one or two jobs. I had the opportunity to purchase a Nikon D70 from the camera store I worked at - and I did. I owned the D70 for about a year until I read about the Nikon D200's upcoming release. I actually put in for a pre-order for the D200 and played the waiting game. A friend of mine at the time owned the Canon 20D and he let me play around with it one day while we were hanging out. I really fell in love with the overall fell and functionality of the camera. I grew very impatient waiting to hear when I would receive my D200. Ultimately, I decided to cancel my order for the D200, and went on B&H's web-site and placed an order for the the 20D + 17-85 IS lens. I then sold all my Nikon stuff (D70, 18-70, 55-200, SB-600), and went with my Canon set-up. I had owned my 20D for about 2 years until I recently sold it after I picked up a used 1DII.

I told him about it and he was convinced, he was taking his Nikon set up back and buying a 30D.

Sometimes I get board and think about switching to Nikon. Then I punch myself in the face, think about that pain and then realize it would probably feel the same if I switched to Nikon ;)

I agree! I had a very crappy Nikon Coolpix (and probably unconsciously made me dismiss Nikon anyway), a very nice Sony DSC-F717, and my previous SLR is a very old Canon AE-1. The 5D was barely in my initial budget...but FF and its manual controls just won me over in getting it as my first dSLR. Never have regretted it since the only other thing that could ever replace it is the 1Ds series:lol:

I looked into getting the Canon d2000 (or the d6000) back in 1999 and I believe it was close to $15,000 which I thought was a little to much at the time for the kind of work I was doing. Finally purchased one in 2002 and was a great camera before climbing up the ladder to the Canon 1Ds which I am currently using along with the phase one P45.
Each camera has its advantages, but probably the 1D MKI is still my favorite.

Like buying a nice new car and keeping it in the garage while you drive your nice old car from the 1990's. If you're not going to use it much, you might aswell wait until it is old and bag it at a bargain.

That said, I fully understand the attachment one gets to a camera. I've gone through it where I thought "man this thing is too much, all I need is this..." after awhile I forgot all about the camera I was so attached too.

I'm the opposite. I use to be heavily into paintball and at one point had 5 markers. After a while I felt bad for the ones that didn't get used all the time. They were made to be used and there thy sat in my case with an unfulfiled destiny.

Now I almost feel that way about my cameras. I can't shoot enough to use all of them. *Sorry A2 and Holga, not today*

lol no its more like Im still trying to get used to the weight penalty. I usually shoot very light. since (for the subjects I shoot at least) the XT is more than enough (for now), the added performance of the 30D is not really needed unless I want to go all out and get the very best :D

it will probably change when I get a Mark III - the Mk III will play second fiddle and the 30D will be the main body ;)

My first was an EOS 350D - took 32,000 shots. Gave it to a friend - who is still using it (she has taken another 10,000 shots with it).

Robust little thing, jst kept on going and going - despite a few falls and mishaps.

Bought an EOS 1Ds Mk II to replace it - 12,000 shots with it so far - fabulous camera.
