How many of you guys have sent pics in to the Herald's Summer fun photo comp?

Up for grabs is a 350d + 18-55... It would make a nice backup to my 300d.
Im sending off my entrys tonight - they close on friday!

Keep an eye out for my pics - i dont always get to the paper each day, and I'd be gutted if I missed them in print.

a nice backup to 300D? Why wouldn't you make the 300D your back up?

I'm guessing this is a newspaper?

The 350 is too small for my hands, and I would have to buy a grip for it.
I use a 300d with grip and am happy with its size / weight.

Yes, its our national news paper. : http://www.nzherald.co.nz/

I've never even heard of the comp!

I won't bother. A stupid BAD photo wins everyyear, coz it's got a cute child in it. If they actually took true artisitic merit and photographic capabilities, someone else should win.

Tim - check the back page of your herald, front section.

Wazza - This year my entrys feature a cute child sitting on the front of a longboard while my mate surfs it in on a big wave. The poor child got nailed by 4 big waves while trying to get that shot lol.

My Herald is at http://www.theherald.co.nz and has no pages...

I was going to say, nzherald.co.nz and upload a file...
Just remove the exif, so they don't feel guilty giving the winning prize to a 20D user.

That is why the shots I entered had pictures of cute children in them :p

Know you target audience!

Got one published on Monday on the Waikato Times, it fitted the above formula!

Edit the exif tag to say you took it on a Sony, then they might take pitty on you ;)

I was thinking a Noink.. And type it that way in my Hex editor. ;)

Nah, most of their photographers used to shoot Noink, not sure what they use now. That is why there is some much second hand Noink stuff at Auckland Camera (or so they have told me). I thought it was because there was no demand for it :D

Tim - check the back page of your herald, front section.

The Herald isn't actualy a National Paper it just likes to think it is, apprently its distribution department is as ignorant as its editorial department. Its only Common North of the Bombays, but is read in numbers as far south as Taupo.

Tim would get the Dominion, which IMO is a far better read.

I thought of entering this comp, but Iv been checking the entrys so far in the back page, and I simply don't have enough cute kids or animals to use as subjects.
But I think if you took a photo of a cute kid playing with a cute animal while semi naked, at the beach in the water, and it was badly framed and composed you might stand a chance of winning :)

Hell I was thinking of ringing the hearld to find out what the story is with freelance work just out of curosity or what they pay, requirements etc.

Moppie
19th of January 2006 (Thu), 23:42
There used to be a Herald guy here, and I think he said something about they don't pay for freelance work as they have thier own staff photogs.
He's since moved to Cananda, but I think his user name was Goose something, you might be able to find something with a well sorted search.

Wazza

V6Goose , and he is now in Canada yep. They have several full time pros, and some of their own stuff, such as Simon/Goose put his pics on the Herald photo database, but they never use other shots pretty much. It's not gonna happen unfortunately Tony. To be one of the full time pros, well I would like to try that out. :)

I had one photo in the dominion, the payment was less than $100. For that I wouldn't bother again.

Quite funny,
reading the Herald this morning with the competition winners - and also the bit that says the winner gets a Canon IXUS II valued at $899 (quite near the picture of a 350D)
someone 'aint going to be happy! Wonder if Canon knows? :-)

Huh? I thought it was clear it was a 350D???

Where did the Ixus come from?

Beats me. I've read & re-read it but still doesn't make sense unless there's been budget cuts since the competition was started...

Not sure. Write into sideswipe and ask.

That competition is a scam anyway. 7,000 entrys, and that is the best? Yeah right.

Its not a photo competition, its a cute litle children competion.

The three runners up were better then that 'winner'!

yeah saw the winning pic and thought "yup that follows moppies rules to win" The previous issues definately stated that the prize was a 350D

Moppie

Anyone know if the "winning" photos are online anywhere?
I can't a link on the really bad website.

MattL
30th of January 2006 (Mon), 03:23
There has been absolutely no mention about the competiton on the website, whatsoever.

Mutter mutter mumble mumble.

Moppie

Might have to take a look at tomorrows sideswipe, Im sure more than a few people will have mentioned the 350D Ixus error, and we all know the Herald dosn't make mistakes ;)

Anyone get to the bottom of this yet, I am sure there is something miss-leading here. Lucky I didn't win or I would be really p*ssed  (I know if I had won I should have been happy to get a prize at all, but for all we know it will end up being a card board mock up).

Had a look at last weeks paper and it is clear as day the prize is a canon EOS 350D, must be budget cuts :)

In yesterday's paper there was a "correction notice" about it, it reads:
"The prize for the Herald's summer holiday competition was a Canon EOS 350D camera with an 18-55mm lens, 8-megapixel CMOS sensor and DIGIC II image processor, a package valued at $1799. A report yesterday wrongly said Canon supplied an IXUS II digital camera, valued at $899, for the winner. Canon gave two Ixus cameras last year."

in other words... ;-)
