I have a PowerShot A95 with Zoombrowser EX installed.
Whilst I have no problems downloading / uploading unaltered photographs, I cannot develop images that have been cropped or had their size altered in any way - this includes photo's that are taken in portrait layout rather than landscape. As I do not have a suitable printer, I have to get my photo's professionally developed; does this mean that I cannot edit them?

Fairly new to this myself - but - have you tried saving a copy of your original image and then doing the edits on that and then saving the final result for printing?

Or, you might try downloading the free editing program from Google - Picasa 2. I find it useful.

Although I can't help you with your specific problem, I'll second the comment about Picasa. It's a very useful image viewer that will also allow you to do some light editing, printing, and emailing of images. Try it.
