the 5D doesn't have the AF assist lamp. How does a photographer shoot a night photos of sport events even he uses an attached flash? How can the camera focus without AF lamp??

If he's using an EX-series compatible flash, then the flash will have it's own AF lamp that the camera can use. And he'll be able to use it with or without the flash firing and up to about 30 feet using the center AF point.

It uses ambient light to focus if there's no AF beam. If there's enough light it doesn't bother to fire the beam anyway.
