View Full Version : Bad eyes = bad pictures?

So I have bad eyes. I'm near sighted. I can see well enough that I don't need my glasses, and I don't when taking pictures. But I was wondering if this effects the pictures I take. Like if I'm lookin through the lense to take a picture and I think its not blurry, but it really is?
PS what would be the best way to take pictures of a basketball game in a gym with not too great lighting, without using a flash.

I am nearsighted and do fine without glasses on while shooting.
A fast lens (max aperture 1.4-2.8 or so will help) will help you get fairly decent shutter speeds in low light. it really depends on how bad the lighting really is.
Oh yeah!!

Could you reccomend a certain lense? Its for my school, they'd use it for yearbook and newspaper photos. Being a zoom lense would also help. Oh yeah, and we're on a buget.

For basketball, use an 85mm f/1.8. Zooms really aren't fast enough for the low light conditions you're describing. Head over to the sports forum here and read some of the current threads about basketball settings. There are a bunch of them.
BTW- I'm the yearbook advisor at our school. We just purchased a Rebel XT, a 50mm 1.8, an 85mm 1.8, and a Tamron 17-35. Any other lens needs usually come out of my own camera bag. :)

I wear glasses as well. I can't say that I can or can't shoot photos without my glasses because they are glued to my face. (I don't walk out of my bedroom without them). I don't know if it makes a difference in the pictures i'm capable of taking. If you have doubts about what you're seeing I would just wear your glasses/contacts.. Sari.

Just set your diopter to your own eyesight and it won't be a problem. That's why it's there. You can purchase stronger diopters if your vision is worse yet.
To set your diopter, look through your viewfinder and turn the little black knob next to it until the numbers in your viewfinder are in focus and sharp.

i dont know for sure about b-ball but my daughter is in karate, and i wanted to take some pictures of her but the kit lens didnt cut it, so i got the 50mm 1.8 lens i picked it up for 85 with a rebate so its fairly cheep and it works wonders, i would like to pick up the 85mm and see how it works, i am sure just as well.

The 85mm autofocuses much faster than the 50, as it has USM.

Monet had serious cataracts in both eyes from 1912 to 1923. Even then he only insisted on having one done. He produced some of he best work in those 13 years

If what you see through the viewfinder on the focussing screen looks clear, then if the resultant picture isn't clear, there's a problem with your camera. The focussing screen and the sensor should be the exact same distance from the lens. The screen's frosted so you're seeing a real image, not an air image. If you're seeing a clear image, your eyes are able to focus on the screen (it's at an apparent distance from your eyes of 1 metre). And a clear on-screen image should mean a clear image capture. If it isn't, either your camera or lens is mis-focussing.

Thanks for the help, I'm gunna try again at the next game.
I don't plan on using auto focus though. I find it very annoying.
