Well, Heather and I went down to the aboriteum to take some pictures today, or should I say I was the only one taking pictures since she forgot to get film for her canon 80u (yep still won't give into the digital age ), but I thought this was a cute candid shot I took of her while she was setting on a park bench...deep in thought.

Maybe more pensive. Good detail and depth of field-she stands out. What settings did you use?

Glad you liked it. Yeah, maybe pensive sounds a bit more in place of her, but I guess it could go either way, I suppose only she knows the real answer to that one. :)
here's the settings I used:
Av mode
ISO 50
1/100
F4.1
Exposure Comp. +1/3
daylight wb
neutral
I also did just a touch of sharpening in PS.

I also like it, though it seems a little flat somehow, even though she's in focus against a blurred out background. Is this any better?

Yeah, I did have it saturated like that, but I guess I was still trying to decide between the two images since she's naturally fair complected, your input now makes it easier on my decision, though the saturated version does add to more of the "pop" effect which I think might've been taken away a little bit from all the sun we had (which I was in no way complaining about!)

Hi Diminished,
the extra pop in my image, is not, I think from the extra saturation. I think it's because I used the 'local contrast enhancement' trick, which is to run USM over it with settings 15,50,0 (these are tweakable) - for more info check http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=local+contrast+enhancement&btnG=Google+Search

P.s. for what it's worth, I know I'm a DSLR user, so like lots of control, but I prefer shooting with the contrast set to minimum, and saturation pushed up for the following reason.
If there's too little contrast, it's easy to add, but if the picture looks too contrasty, it's really difficult to reduce it much.
WIth saturation it's the oppposite - if the image is too saturated, then it's easily reduced, but if there isn't enough saturation, if you push it up too much, then you get weird things going on.
