Hi
I have a 20d with a tamron 28-75 and 430 EX. I noticed that a lot of my pictures look a little bit yellowish. I am trying to learn more about the different settings. But tonight is my wife's birthday and I want the pics to be great. I know it has probably something to do with the white balance. Can someone help me and tell me what setting I should use tonight and what f-stop, iso etc. I am shooting indoor with fairly poor light.
Appreciate all the help
Thanks

For normal household lighting, set the camera's White Balance choice to "tungsten" (the little light bulb in the lower right corner of the White Balance window). Look at page 50 in your 20D's manual for a short description of all the settings.

just shoot RAW and you can adjust WB in post processing to whatever you'd like. alternatively, you can shoot a white/grey card in your environment and use that for custom WB to minimize post processing work (see your manual for instructions).

Real simple -
First take one shot with your subject holding up a neutral gray card pointed at the camera. It does not have to be any particular shade of gray - just so it does not have any noticeable color cast. Shoot RAW. The shot should be made in the final lighting environment.
Next, make your shots (no gray card) paying attention to all of the rules for lighting portrait shots - diffuse, not harsh lighting. If possible have the lighting coming from two lamps - one high and to one side and the other straight on. Balance the lighting so that there are shadows from the sidelight but keep them soft with the frontal light.
Shoot all in RAW.
When in RAW processing use the White Balance tool and click on the gray card of the special shot. Note what Temperature and Tint settings result from using that tool. Make sure all the other prints are set to that Temperature and Tint during RAW processing.
