Hi - does anyone know if it's safe to use a microdrive in a Canon EOS D30? If yes, can anyone recommend one?

I assume you are refering to the IBM 1 Gig Microdrive?
If so, Yes it will function perfectly in a Canon D30.
If you are asking about large capacity CF cards then, yes the D30 can handle cards up to 1Gig. Larger cards however may present a problem as I believe that the D30 uses the FAT16 format to store files and most 1+ gig cards are FAT32.
IBM microdrives are great. They are a bit delicate so you have to treat them kindly. Soildstate flash cards are more robust and can take a bit more abuse. (Some can even be laundered and still work.) Check Prices, find the one in your budget and have fun filling it with images!
hope that helps. Good Luck To you.

;)
Cards themselves do not have any specific format. D30 can handle any card formatted to FAT16. FAT16 can handle volumes up to 2GB, and most likely even 4GB cards would work with D30 (but only 2GB would be usable on each card). FAT32 allows volumes up to 2TB.
To the original question, I have two 1GB Microdrives for my D30, and I can recommend them. Actually D30 can handle the Microdrive much better than most of the fast CF cards, which shows in faster transfer time. The later Canon DSLRs have improved capability of handling fast non-Microdrive cards.

Cool! Do you know what sort of price I should be looking at? I'll probably pick up a couple of 1gig microdrives...

I found my D30 to be considerably slower at writing and reviewing pictures with the microdrive. For the price, I would get some CF cards. 256's are barely over 50.00 bucks now and hold about 66 raws. That's about all I like to chance on 1 disk for paying jobs.

I have a canon d30. I have also just purchased a 1 gb microdrive. I got mine from Peak Publications. Its an English based company and it cost me £140.00. I can take up to 272 shots in raw, and 600 in normal high resolution format. I use the D30 with the microdrive for wedding photography, and they really work well together. I highly recomend it.

You can also get a 340Mb and 512Mb Microdrive which work out cheaper still (altough cost per Mb is slightly more expensive)
