Your second photo is definitely a much sharper photo but what it's lacking is hmmm what's the word I'm looking for, direction, substance, hmmm ... easier to just put in more than a one word. It looks like this person is more than just singing, he's a guitar player, I'm assuming due to the strap over the shoulder. I love tight close in shots and tend to do this myself but when shooting bands if you do all head shots they will tend to look the same and the great thing about shooting bands is that everyone is doing something different to combine to be the big picture. I've done some headshots of lead singers who also play guitar without the guitar but they are usually posted within a grouping of photos of the band.(see below, this was one of 12 shots that are posted on my website, it's jared leto, the singer from 30 seconds to mars, i liked the shot because of the stage lighting across him) This is only opinion and opinions are a dime a dozen.

Hog Piffle! Ear's opinion is at least $1.25 each and probably more. If you decide to do more bands he will give you great advice! With that cleared up, I think you should have opened up your lens all the way and shot a tad faster ... I think you have excessive camera motion blur or are OOF. As for head shots, they certainly have their place and are my favorite, but Courtney is correct that they need to be part of a more complete gestalt.
Hope to see you take to shooting more bands! We really like to encourage newbie's into this sport ... er, ah, um, no, I guess we're in Performing Arts now! :-)

Thanks Dwight! I'm definitely not knocking head shots and seriously for bands that don't move so much I do them, though in many instances I also try to include arms/hands as those singers that aren't also playing guitar can be really expressive.
The first shot does look OOF and the second one the focus is on the mic. That being said I would have done anything to have traded someone standing stil to what I shot tonight! Way too much movement and strobes!
Oh and I'm a she!

Sorry, Earpl..., er, ah, Ms. Courtney ... I must be blind not to have noticed! It does seem to me that about half the photographers who do get into the casino are women, although we have relatively few posting here who admit to it ... for which I am very sympathetic. But yes, every group in every venue is different and ya' gotta' go with the flow, particularly when they limit you to two or three songs, sigh.

bad lighting can kill a whole shot. the one serious problem I have is how in a darkened room to get the shot using flash without all the dust particles botching up the shot. another problem I have, of course, is over or underexposure, hey Ear. do you have any advice regarding this situation? thanks blackdiamond13 @ Jemsite (http://www.jemsite.com)
