Toogy,
These are perfection as always. I am never disappointed when looking at your work. Compositon, lighting.... super. I love the b&w with the window in the background. Nice use of the natural lighting. Keep posting more... I like your style! :)

These pics are awesome! I love the B&W one with the flowers behind her. Wonder what it would look like with just the flowers in color. The shots are beautiful, professional, and simply perfect. I really like the third one too - great way to capture the ring, flowers, and details on her dress.

Those are fantastic!! Great work!!
If it wasn't for the 4th shot... I would have thought it was the worst day of her life. I love serious portraits (no fake smiles) but she looks quite unhappy. Regardless... they're emotional and the quality is top notch!

I think it was the first shot that triggered me... her eyes look a bit bloodshot and glossy like she was crying... then the other ones followed that mood (looking down).
BTW, I like the landscape shot of the 2. I rarely see landscape wedding portraits so that is really cool!! It looks good, and nothing wrong with the chairs.

Maybe it's my monitor or eyes but the skirt lenght (hips to hem of dress) in #5 and 6 seems to have shortened considerably. She appears to have shrunk! especially in #5.
Maybe it's just me!
The forground in #5 looks enlarged and the bride is retreating into the centre of the shot.

While I agree with almost everything wonderful said here I think that you really need to give her the Visine treatment in the heads shots ... her eyes are bloodshot, probably from crying in joy at how beautiful she looks in your images!

That explains it!
Well you've done a really good job of making her look considerably taller in all the other shots.
I'm not crazy about the brown brick wall and patterned carpet location. I find it a bit too busy with a bit of a seventies thing going on!
I love the others and I think your bride will be very pleased.

hi, love your work, need to find someone of that good for my wedding. I like the PS work, well I assume its that, on the landscape images where its fading to black. I assume this is just deleting to a black layer with a soft focus. I will have to try it myself.
Which lens do you use most at your shoot.
Andyh
Toogy
25th of January 2006 (Wed), 10:03
The fading to black in the corners was done with Photoshop, using the lens correction filter and adding a lens vignette to the image.
I use all my lens, for the prep stuff & formals I used my 28-70, for the ceremony shots I used the 70-200 F4, for the reception shots I used the 85mm F1.8. And the wide angle shots were with my 10-22.

Absolutely gorgeous photos! I love the b&w one. How did you meter that one? Stunning shots and If I was the bride I'd be VERY pleased.
Hm, ok, being the girl I am, that's a lot of jewellery she's wearing! Wonder if it was all real...hehe The train is quite long too. Always wondered if that's not hard to walk around with.

I guess I'll have to go against the crowd here. I don't like WB in a lot of your shots. Some exposures are far from perfect (like #11 - it can be easily corrected in PS), the same with their expressions - again #11 is not throwing me on my knees but also the posed shots seem to have a lot of 'accidental' expressions, the bride is sad not only in #1, also #5, 6, 7, and 16 which just doesn't feel right and the groom in 16 seems to be in the middle of a sentence... why ? I like #2 but why is she holding the flowers behind her back ?

Thanks for the critism, it is appreciated.
I attribute the accidental poses to the way I work. My clients know I am not a real 'traditional' posing type photographer. I merely suggest things and see how it plays out.
What don't you like about the WB? Too warm?
In #2, you asked why is she holding the flowers behind her back, why not? I think it looks good.
Anyways, thanks again.

I don't see that the white balance is off. I actually think the colors in #11 look great. The ones that look warm are a result of the gold room they are shooting in. It reflects off everything giving it a warm glow. This is not a white balance error, this is merely the colors of the environment. If your seeing a white balance problem, perhaps your monitor needs a little calibration adjustment. You might want to look into that.
As for the flowers behind the back, from a woman's point of view, I think it's a beautiful effect. Sometimes you have to see things beyond traditional and appreciate the creative results that come from working as an artist and not as a photographer who does the same posed thing every single time.
I always love Toogy's style and think he is doing an awesome job!

The WB looks good to me... Maybe DavidM's monitor is off... or maybe the rest of ours are off.... regardless awesome shots. That location looks awesome for photography! Some nice difused light coming in from above... sure beats the good ol' dark church and having to shoot at ISO1600+
My wedding season starts in May so i'm getting stoked!

yeah... somebody's monitor must be off but it's useless to continue without a direct comparison - I'm new to this forum so I don't know - is it ok to post 'redone' examples of somebody else's work ???

I'm pretty sure my monitor is calibrated correctly as what I'm seeing shows in numbers as well. I can post a corrected #11 as soon as I know the answer to my previous question.... I don't want to run into copyright problems on my second day here ;)

OK, here they go:
http://www.catchlightphoto.net/galleries/2006/samples/IMG_2600.JPG http://www.catchlightphoto.net/galleries/2006/samples/IMG_2600_fixed.JPG
http://www.catchlightphoto.net/galleries/2006/samples/IMG_2738.JPG http://www.catchlightphoto.net/galleries/2006/samples/IMG_2738_fixed.JPG
You can clearly see the difference in the first image. Pinkish, washed out skin tones are replaced with more pleasing, deeper ones (which by the way match the skin tones in the second image a little better). In the second one the difference is more subtle but if you look at the large dress area the magenta cast is gone.

Very nice "correction", David. Did you saturate the first one in addition to white balance? Oh, and welcome to POTN!
David M

Thanks ! Did not add saturation - just played with levels for each channel separately.

26th of January 2006 (Thu), 23:07
Thanks for sharing your experiment with us. I agree on the second photo.. I didn't notice a magenta cast until your posted your comparison. On the first photo however, I like the original better... I think she is truly a fair-skinned girl and my eyes like the softer lighter version of that photo. White balance or not, just a personal preferance in the #11 photo.. I'll be interested to see Toogy's reply. :)

Thanks for your input, do you mind sharing how you go about color correcting? I usually do it in raw conversion by selecting a white point, but obviously I am missing something.
Thanks

He mentioned individual level channels.... but I'm hoping he meant curves.
If you create a curves adjustment layer, you can select the individual channels. Then you can bend the line to the top-left or bottom right corners to adjust colour. You'll notice colour cast being introduced... so it's a matter of finding the sweet spot. (you can use the keyboard arrows for fine tuning)
Go through each of the channels (red/green/blue) then go through them again. Sometimes you'll find the correction on a layer is fine until you change other ones.
Just move the line up and down until the colour looks neutral. Find the points where too much cast is there, then find the mid point.
You can get into more complicated curves, but generally just bending from the center of the curve is good enough.

In the first shot her eyes look kind of reddish, maybe just a little whiter in ps would help, or maybe that's what you were going for.
Outstanding work. Maybe I will get to this level one day.

To me, re Davids shots on my calibrated LCD, 1st shot looks too cold, 2nd looks too warm. 3rd and 4th look the same.
David M

3rd and 4th look the same.
then there's no way your monitor is showing you what you should be seeing :)
as much as the color in #1 and #2 could be a matter of preference (one person before mentioned they actually preferred the original #11) there is a clear difference between #3 and #4

Levels will truncate the data leaving more trap shadow or highlights... with curves, on each colour channel, you can adjust colour without altering the overall picture contrast like with levels.
I'm not sure colour correction with levels is such a good idea.

Superb shots. She'll love them. I would do a little tweaking to remove a bit of the color cast on some of the shots, as you want the white of her eyes and dress to be closer to reality. The Web versions may not do total justice to color, of course. Otherwise, nice compositions, and good emotional content.

It depends. Using levels you can kill two birds with one stone and correct exposure at the same time. If your exposure is perfect - I agree use curves instead, and what you're talking about will only be noticeable in real life when the correction is by really large amount. If you're around 0.3 to full stop underexposed you're pretty safe using levels and still getting beautiful print afterwards.

Hard workd and a substantial number of shots ..... my own unofficial litte survey now about workflow and presentation:
1. Do you ftp the files to a commercial pro lab for proof output, or
2. Do you give a CD to Costco, Fotomat, etc. for proofing?
3. Does the bride & groom receive a box of loose proofs to review, or
4. Do you load the previews in a proof book for their viewing and ordering? Thanks

Most helpful? I guess I use my 28-70 the most. Since I just got the 70-200 F2.8 IS, I hope to use that range often as well.
It really depends on the situation and lighting. This past weekend I shot the entire ceremony with my 85mm at F2.0 because of the lack of lighting and was told not to use flash.
