It just occured to me how interesting it is that we use specific words in order to get people to smile. In the US we use the word "cheese", because it provokes a smile. In Spanish they use the word "patatas" (potatos) instead of cheese (queso) in order to get the subject to smile.
Do you know what any other languages use? This should be interesting (and useful if we're travelling.

When taking pictures of my Japanese relatives or friends, I have them say "チーズ" (cheezu). :)

That's strange, I always thought "cheese" was used because if you exaggerate the lip motion of saying "cheese" it looks like a smile. Obviously, that wouldn't work with "patatas".

I don't think I've ever made any of my models say cheese. It's too cheesy. (Pun points +100)
I just make all my subjects laugh/smile one way or another and I'm pretty good at it without looking like a clown or something. I'm a pretty funny person I guess.

Generally the word cheese makes a :D shape...ie cheeeeese.
Unfortunately the rather stupid group photographer that took my class photo about 5 years ago didn't know this fact, and had us say "Silly Sausages".
Guess when he pressed the shutter
soooooooosages. Our whole class was going ooo

I flash them. No seriously, I just do something silly to make them laugh. Sometimes, just holding a normal conversation helps people to relax. Many times, talking about family and friends or loved ones helps people to have a natural smile.

I use to get them to think of me naked....but that was a lot of Kilos ago. Now, if I say that, they look like their are watching a Stephen King movie.

I was shooting a group of people for an in-house magazine and they were all chatting amongst themselves and looking totally disorganised while I setup the tripod and attached the remote (while listening to derisive comments - they are/were a camera company and my camera wasn't one of theirs)
In the front row was a woman whose skirt had lifted well above her knees while she was sitting herself down
so, standing beside my camera - I suggested that she may like to take the opportunity to lower her skirt a bit - for my sake.
Lots of smiles and instant attention - and my right hand was clicking away on the shutter release.
Got some good pics out of that one.

I just tell them "smile and think of the stupid photographer who crosses her fingers and prays the picture will turn out good". That gets my friends laughing. I also crack stupid jokes that are so crappy people will laugh. With strangers I haven't tried anything really.

I just banter and snap a lot of shots. This gets them relaxed before getting them to try to stay in some position. Some of the best ones are the more natural shots before "the pose"

I never ask people to smile. I think non-smiling, nature expressions are more interesting.
