The Washington Blues Society sponsored the Slide Guitar Showcase in Seattle last week. I shot the first set with available light, but it was too dark and I was losing too many shots, so I switched to flash for the second and third sets. Here are a few of my favorites:

Great shots :). I laughed when I saw that in the first three pictures they have the same expressions. How far away were you?

Well for some reason all of these were at 70mm, so I wasn't that far back. Probably 20 feet or so. I did shoot some at 200mm, both from close up, and from the back of the room. But these seemed to be the better shots - I like those grimaces... :D

Very nice images, Steve, given the conditions.

I think you did a great job, especially balancing the flash with available light. Nice work! :D

Nice shots.
I'm surprised that you had to use a flash, though. At ISO 3200 with a shutter speed of 1/50, you should have had light to spare in even the poorest of lighting situations...

Actually I could have kept shooting without flash, but I was losing a lot of shots to pefrormer motion. They don't tend to cooperate very well in that area. Here's a good example that demonstrates the issue:

As you can see by looking at the drummer, I pretty much did my part on this one, but the guitar player was pretty active. I was getting way too many like this without the flash. I will say that this one was only 1/13 shutter speed, so it is not surprising that he smeared, but that is more along the lines of the exposures that were most common before I switched to flash.

I'm partial to #4.
The others just look like they are wailing. #4 looks more into the music.
Good job!

Nice shots although I agree the first three look like they are in serious pain. :-)

One night while I was shooting somebody few of you would know except maybe Chris at the Maverick Saloon, one of the numerous little old ladies, meaning over 70, who love these concerts (and drinking) turned to me and said, "Have you ever noticed how the lead guitars always look like they're on the crapper?" It was twenty minutes before I was able to shoot another frame. :p

hahahaha... Well in addition to dabbling in photography, I'm a guitarist, so I know which shots those guys are going to like. All of these were published in the Washington Blues Society newsletter, and sure enough, they liked them. :)

Nice shots...I like the one with motion blur...the drummer makes the shot.

The guy on the left in the white shirt. Do you recognize the headliner? Initials AL. No looking at the image properties!

Yes the Canadian Aaron Lines...not much of an impact at the moment. You would pic this time to post a small picture.

His last name is Canada...they are from Oklahoma and a have been very big for about 5-7 years in the Dallas area. The Dallas market has always been the #1 market for them. They acutally have a unique sound.

I am just demonstrating my exceptional ignorance of the acts I shoot! At one time I probably knew all that but it is just unimportant in my scheme of things. But I know Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland!

.....and who has she recently done a recent song with, I'm pretty sure she performed the duet at the Daytona 500. I do believe it won a CMA Award a couple of weeks ago?
Name that duet!
